    Analysis of the Radiative Heat Transfer in Chains of Nanoparticles

    The transfer of heat through radiation plays a crucial role in the thermalization of nanoscale objects thanks to the involvement of evanescent waves. As nanotechnology becomes a prominent area of research and development, the understanding of this phenomenon is becoming more and more crucial. In this work, we investigate the thermalization of linear chains of SiC nanospheres. To that end, we develop an analytical method that allows us to calculate the radiative heat exchange between the particles through the analysis of the normal modes of the system and their corresponding decay rates.     Atividades de Educação Ambiental: como Minimizar e Lidar com o Resíduo

    Neste trabalho, apresentamos os resultados obtidos com o projeto Atividades de Educação e Ética ambiental: evitando o desperdĂ­cio e lidando com o lixo, que teve o apoio da PrĂł-Reitoria de Cultura e ExtensĂŁo da USP. Este projeto envolveu atividades voltadas Ă  temĂĄtica ambiental, tais como produção e gerenciamento de resĂ­duos sĂłlidos (orgĂąnicos e reciclĂĄveis) em residĂȘncias, escolas e espaços pĂșblicos, alĂ©m de atividades acerca do desperdĂ­cio e minimização de resĂ­duos. Foram escolhidas trĂȘs escolas na cidade de SĂŁo Carlos-SP, levando em consideração o interesse das equipes de coordenação e professores quanto Ă s propostas do projeto, faixa etĂĄria dos estudantes e tipo de instituição (pĂșblica ou privada). As atividades permitiram a reflexĂŁo e a troca de experiĂȘncias dentro de uma realidade distante da ideal no tocante aos hĂĄbitos de consumo, desperdĂ­cio e descarte de resĂ­duos. AlĂ©m disto, levaram a resultados positivos, jĂĄ que foi possĂ­vel educar indivĂ­duos quanto Ă s diferentes concepçÔes do meio ambiente. Comparativamente, os estudantes se mostraram interessados de forma distinta Ă s atividades, o que reflete diferentes realidades escolares e familiares. No entanto, depois de tomar conhecimento das questĂ”es ambientais, tornaram-se bastante motivados, solidificando uma relação positiva entre a comunidade escolar e o seu entorno.In this paper, we present the results obtained with the project Activities of Environmental Education and Ethics: avoiding waste and dealing with trash, which was supported by the University of SĂŁo Paulo’s Dean of Culture Community Relations. This project aimed to promote initiatives focused on environmental issues, such as management of waste produced from households, schools and public places (organic and recyclable wastes), waste minimization, and environmental conservation. Three schools from the city of SĂŁo Carlos-SP were chosen based on the interest manifested by the coordination teams and teachers in the project proposals, on student ages and on types of institution (public or private). The activities offered a framework for reflection and exchange of experiences in a reality far from ideal regarding consumption habits and waste disposal. Without doubt, these actions are always positive, for they are designed to educate individuals concerning different conceptions of the environmental. Comparatively, the students showed to be differently interested in the proposed activities, which it was most related to different realities at home and schools. However, after facing environmental issues, they become highly motivated, solidifying a positive relationship between school and neighborhood

    This paper contributes to the literature on CSR and International Business by linking firm internationalization to corporate philanthropy. Considering the 2004 Tsunami disaster as a highly relevant case of an international societal issue, we analyze the characteristics of the corporate response to the disaster among Fortune Global 500 firms. We find that home region, degree of internationalization, firm size and profitability most strongly influenced the propensity of firms to donate as well as the value of their donations

    The Complexity of the Empire Colouring Problem

    We investigate the computational complexity of the empire colouring problem (as defined by Percy Heawood in 1890) for maps containing empires formed by exactly r>1r > 1 countries each. We prove that the problem can be solved in polynomial time using ss colours on maps whose underlying adjacency graph has no induced subgraph of average degree larger than s/rs/r. However, if s≄3s \geq 3, the problem is NP-hard even if the graph is a forest of paths of arbitrary lengths (for any r≄2r \geq 2, provided s<2r−(2r+1/4+3/2)s < 2r - \sqrt(2r + 1/4+ 3/2). Furthermore we obtain a complete characterization of the problem's complexity for the case when the input graph is a tree, whereas our result for arbitrary planar graphs fall just short of a similar dichotomy. Specifically, we prove that the empire colouring problem is NP-hard for trees, for any r≄2r \geq 2, if 3≀s≀2r−13 \leq s \leq 2r-1 (and polynomial time solvable otherwise). For arbitrary planar graphs we prove NP-hardness if s<7s<7 for r=2r=2, and s<6r−3s < 6r-3, for r≄3r \geq 3. The result for planar graphs also proves the NP-hardness of colouring with less than 7 colours graphs of thickness two and less than 6r−36r-3 colours graphs of thickness r≄3r \geq 3.Comment: 23 pages, 12 figure

    The reaction of oleic acid monolayers with gas-phase ozone at the air water interface: the effect of sub-phase viscosity, and inert secondary components

    Organic films that form on atmospheric particulate matter change the optical and cloud condensation nucleation properties of the particulate matter and consequently have implications for modern climate and climate models. The organic films are subject to attack from gas-phase oxidants present in ambient air. Here we revisit in greater detail the oxidation of a monolayer of oleic acid by gas-phase ozone at the air–water interface as this provides a model system for the oxidation reactions that occur at the air–water interface of aqueous atmospheric aerosol. Experiments were performed on monolayers of oleic acid at the air–liquid interface at atmospherically relevant ozone concentrations to investigate if the viscosity of the sub-phase influences the rate of the reaction and to determine the effect of the presence of a second component within the monolayer, stearic acid, which is generally considered to be non-reactive towards ozone, on the reaction kinetics as determined by neutron reflectometry measurements. Atmospheric aerosol can be extremely viscous. The kinetics of the reaction were found to be independent of the viscosity of the sub-phase below the monolayer over a range of moderate viscosities, Image ID:d0cp03934a-t1.gif, demonstrating no involvement of aqueous sub-phase oxidants in the rate determining step. The kinetics of oxidation of monolayers of pure oleic acid were found to depend on the surface coverage with different behaviour observed above and below a surface coverage of oleic acid of ∌1 × 1018 molecule m−2. Atmospheric aerosol are typically complex mixtures, and the presence of an additional compound in the monolayer that is inert to direct ozone oxidation, stearic acid, did not significantly change the reaction kinetics. It is demonstrated that oleic acid monolayers at the air–water interface do not leave any detectable material at the air–water interface, contradicting the previous work published in this journal which the authors now believe to be erroneous. The combined results presented here indicate that the kinetics, and thus the atmospheric chemical lifetime for unsaturated surface active materials at the air–water interface to loss by reaction with gas-phase ozone, can be considered to be independent of other materials present at either the air–water interface or in the aqueous sub-phase

    Measurement of the polarisation of W bosons produced with large transverse momentum in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS experiment

    This paper describes an analysis of the angular distribution of W->enu and W->munu decays, using data from pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2010, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 35 pb^-1. Using the decay lepton transverse momentum and the missing transverse energy, the W decay angular distribution projected onto the transverse plane is obtained and analysed in terms of helicity fractions f0, fL and fR over two ranges of W transverse momentum (ptw): 35 < ptw < 50 GeV and ptw > 50 GeV. Good agreement is found with theoretical predictions. For ptw > 50 GeV, the values of f0 and fL-fR, averaged over charge and lepton flavour, are measured to be : f0 = 0.127 +/- 0.030 +/- 0.108 and fL-fR = 0.252 +/- 0.017 +/- 0.030, where the first uncertainties are statistical, and the second include all systematic effects.Comment: 19 pages plus author list (34 pages total), 9 figures, 11 tables, revised author list, matches European Journal of Physics C versio

    Observation of a new chi_b state in radiative transitions to Upsilon(1S) and Upsilon(2S) at ATLAS

    The chi_b(nP) quarkonium states are produced in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV and recorded by the ATLAS detector. Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.4 fb^-1, these states are reconstructed through their radiative decays to Upsilon(1S,2S) with Upsilon->mu+mu-. In addition to the mass peaks corresponding to the decay modes chi_b(1P,2P)->Upsilon(1S)gamma, a new structure centered at a mass of 10.530+/-0.005 (stat.)+/-0.009 (syst.) GeV is also observed, in both the Upsilon(1S)gamma and Upsilon(2S)gamma decay modes.     Search for displaced vertices arising from decays of new heavy particles in 7 TeV pp collisions at ATLAS

    We present the results of a search for new, heavy particles that decay at a significant distance from their production point into a final state containing charged hadrons in association with a high-momentum muon. The search is conducted in a pp-collision data sample with a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV and an integrated luminosity of 33 pb^-1 collected in 2010 by the ATLAS detector operating at the Large Hadron Collider. Production of such particles is expected in various scenarios of physics beyond the standard model. We observe no signal and place limits on the production cross-section of supersymmetric particles in an R-parity-violating scenario as a function of the neutralino lifetime.     Measurement of the inclusive isolated prompt photon cross-section in pp collisions at sqrt(s)= 7 TeV using 35 pb-1 of ATLAS data

    A measurement of the differential cross-section for the inclusive production of isolated prompt photons in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy sqrt(s) = 7 TeV is presented. The measurement covers the pseudorapidity ranges |eta|<1.37 and 1.52<=|eta|<2.37 in the transverse energy range 45<=E_T<400GeV. The results are based on an integrated luminosity of 35 pb-1, collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The yields of the signal photons are measured using a data-driven technique, based on the observed distribution of the hadronic energy in a narrow cone around the photon candidate and the photon selection criteria. The results are compared with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations and found to be in good agreement over four orders of magnitude in cross-section.Comment: 7 pages plus author list (18 pages total), 2 figures, 4 tables, final version published in Physics Letters

    Measurement of D*+/- meson production in jets from pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    This paper reports a measurement of D*+/- meson production in jets from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt(s) = 7 TeV at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The measurement is based on a data sample recorded with the ATLAS detector with an integrated luminosity of 0.30 pb^-1 for jets with transverse momentum between 25 and 70 GeV in the pseudorapidity range |eta| < 2.5. D*+/- mesons found in jets are fully reconstructed in the decay chain: D*+ -> D0pi+, D0 -> K-pi+, and its charge conjugate. The production rate is found to be N(D*+/-)/N(jet) = 0.025 +/- 0.001(stat.) +/- 0.004(syst.) for D*+/- mesons that carry a fraction z of the jet momentum in the range 0.3 < z < 1. Monte Carlo predictions fail to describe the data at small values of z, and this is most marked at low jet transverse momentum.Comment: 10 pages plus author list (22 pages total), 5 figures, 1 table, matches published version in Physical Review
