Overview of VideoCLEF 2009: New perspectives on speech-based multimedia content enrichment
VideoCLEF 2009 offered three tasks related to enriching video content for improved multimedia access in a multilingual environment. For each task, video data (Dutch-language television, predominantly documentaries) accompanied by speech recognition transcripts were provided.
The Subject Classification Task involved automatic tagging of videos with subject theme labels. The best performance was achieved by approaching subject tagging as an information retrieval task and using both speech recognition transcripts and archival metadata. Alternatively, classifiers were trained using either the training data provided or data collected from Wikipedia or via general Web search. The Affect Task involved detecting narrative peaks, defined as points where viewers perceive heightened dramatic tension. The task was carried out on the âBeeldenstormâ collection containing 45 short-form documentaries on the visual arts. The best runs exploited affective vocabulary and audience directed speech. Other approaches included using topic changes, elevated speaking pitch, increased speaking intensity and radical visual changes. The Linking Task, also called âFinding Related Resources Across Languages,â involved linking video to material on the same subject in a different language.
Participants were provided with a list of multimedia anchors (short video segments) in the Dutch-language âBeeldenstormâ collection and were expected to return target pages drawn from English-language Wikipedia. The best performing methods used the transcript of the
speech spoken during the multimedia anchor to build a query to search an index of the Dutch language Wikipedia. The Dutch Wikipedia pages returned were used to identify related English pages. Participants also experimented with pseudo-relevance feedback, query translation and methods that targeted proper names
Physical fitness and white matter microstructure in children with overweight or obesity: the ActiveBrains project
Recent studies investigated the association of cardiorespiratory fitness with white matter microstructure in children, yet little work has explored to what extent other components of physical fitness (i.e., muscular or motor fitness) are associated with white matter microstructure. Indeed, this association has not been previously explored in children with overweight/obesity who present a different white matter development. Therefore, we aimed to examine associations between physical fitness components and white matter microstructure in children with overweight/obesity. In total, 104 (10.04 +/- 1.15 years old; 43 girls) children were included in this cross-sectional study. Physical fitness was assessed using the ALPHA-fitness test battery. Fractional anisotropy (FA) and mean diffusivity were derived from diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). No association was found between physical fitness and global DTI metrics (all P>0.082). Within individual tracts, all associations became non-significant when analyses were adjusted for multiple comparisons. Using the voxel-wise approach, we identified a small cluster in the left lateral frontal lobe where children with greater upper-body muscular fitness showed higher FA (PFWE-corrected=0.042). Although our results cannot conclude physical fitness is related to white matter microstructure in children with overweight/obesity; those findings indicate that the association of muscular fitness with white matter microstructure might be more focal on frontal areas of the brain, as opposed to global differences
Perinatal outcomes in monochorionic multiple pregnancies regarding the placental characteristics
OBJETIVO: evaluar las caracterĂsticas placentarias de pacientes con
embarazos mĂșltiples monocoriales relacionados con el resultado
obstétrico en nuestro medio.
MATERIAL Y MĂTODO: estudio observacional, descriptivo, prospectivo efectuado en dos instituciones de tercer nivel de atenciĂłn
de BogotĂĄ, Colombia, entre el 31 julio de 2009 y el 31 de agosto
de 2011. EvaluaciĂłn de pacientes con embarazos monocoriales,
complicaciones, tratamientos y resultados perinatales; anĂĄlisis
placentarios relacionados con el nĂșmero y tipo de anastomosis,
forma y distancia entre las inserciones de los cordones umbilicales
y distribuciĂłn placentaria.
RESULTADOS: se incluyeron 72 embarazos monocoriales: 93.1%
correspondieron a embarazos dobles y 86.1% a biamniĂłticos. De
las placentas analizadas, 91.6% tuvieron al menos una anastomosis,
especĂficamente arterioarterial (70.8% de los casos). Se encontraron
complicaciones propias de los embarazos monocoriales (41.6%),
principalmente: restricciĂłn de crecimiento intrauterino selectivo (16
casos) y trasfusiĂłn feto-fetal (11 pares de gemelos). Se registrĂł un caso
de trasfusiĂłn arterial reversa y una muerte fetal (10.7%) provocada
por sĂndrome de transfusiĂłn feto-fetal. Entre las causas de morbilidad
neonatal se encontraron: taquipnea transitoria del recién nacido y
enfermedad de membrana hialina. La mortalidad neonatal fue de
5.4%. No hubo casos de mortalidad materna.
CONCLUSIĂN: las caracterĂsticas placentarias determinan las
complicaciones propias del embarazo monocorial, principalmente:
sĂndrome de trasfusiĂłn feto-fetal, restricciĂłn de crecimiento intrauterino selectivo. La detecciĂłn ecogrĂĄfica prenatal de estas alteraciones es importante para ofrecer consejerĂa y vigilancia gestacional
programada.OBJECTIVE: To evaluate placental characteristics in monochorionic
multiple pregnancies in relation to obstetric outcome in our environment.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: Prospective and observational study was
made; carried to 31 July 2009 and 31 August 2011 in two high complexity institutions in Bogota, Colombia. We included monochorionic
pregnancies for diagnosis of complications, management and perinatal
outcome, placental analyzes were evaluated with respect to the number
and type of anastomosis, type and distance between umbilical cord
insertions and placental sharing.
RESULTS: We registrered 72 monochorionic pregnancies, twin pregnancies were 93.1% and 86.1% diamniotic. Placentas analyzed 91.6%
had at least one placental anastomosis, arterio-arterial mainly in 70.8%
of patients. Complications of monochorionic pregnancies in 41.6% of
cases mainly selective growth restriction in 16 cases, followed by twin
to twin transfusion in 11 pairs of twins were found. A case of blood
transfusion reverse was presented; and a fetal mortality of 10.7%
remains the leading cause twin to twin transfusion syndrome. Among
the causes of neonatal morbidity transient tachypnea of the newborn,
followed by hyaline membrane disease were found. The neonatal
mortality rate was 5.4%. There were no maternal deaths.
CONCLUSION: Placental characteristics determine the complications
of monochorionic pregnancy, as the presence of twin to twin transfusion syndrome selective growth restriction and perinatal outcome.
Prenatal sonographic identification of these features is important for
prenatal counseling and the frequency of gestational surveillance
Effects of an exercise program on brain health outcomes for children with overweight or obesity
Importance Pediatric overweight and obesity are highly prevalent across the world, with implications for poorer cognitive and brain health. Exercise might potentially attenuate these adverse consequences.
Objectives To investigate the effects of an exercise program on brain health indicators, including intelligence, executive function, academic performance, and brain outcomes, among children with overweight or obesity and to explore potential mediators and moderators of the main effects of exercise.
Design, Setting, and Participants All preexercise and postexercise data for this 20-week randomized clinical trial of 109 children aged 8 to 11 years with overweight or obesity were collected from November 21, 2014, to June 30, 2016, with neuroimaging data processing and analyses conducted between June 1, 2017, and December 20, 2021. All 109 children were included in the intention-to-treat analyses; 90 children (82.6%) completed the postexercise evaluation and attended 70% or more of the recommended exercise sessions and were included in per-protocol analyses.
Interventions All participants received lifestyle recommendations. The control group continued their usual routines, whereas the exercise group attended a minimum of 3 supervised 90-minute sessions per week in an out-of-school setting.
Main Outcomes and Measures Intelligence, executive function (cognitive flexibility, inhibition, and working memory), and academic performance were assessed with standardized tests, and hippocampal volume was measured with magnetic resonance imaging.
Results The 109 participants included 45 girls (41.3%); participants had a mean (SD) body mass index of 26.8 (3.6) and a mean (SD) age of 10.0 (1.1) years at baseline. In per-protocol analyses, the exercise intervention improved crystallized intelligence, with the exercise group improving from before exercise to after exercise (mean z score, 0.62 [95% CI, 0.44-0.80]) compared with the control group (mean z score, â0.10 [95% CI, â0.28 to 0.09]; difference between groups, 0.72 SDs [95% CI, 0.46-0.97]; Pâ<â.001). Total intelligence also improved significantly more in the exercise group (mean z score, 0.69 [95% CI, 0.48-0.89]) than in the control group (mean z score, 0.07 [95% CI, â0.14 to 0.28]; difference between groups, 0.62 SDs [95% CI, 0.31-0.91]; Pâ<â.001). Exercise also positively affected a composite score of cognitive flexibility (mean z score: exercise group, 0.25 [95% CI, 0.05-0.44]; control group, â0.17 [95% CI, â0.39 to 0.04]; difference between groups, 0.42 SDs [95% CI, 0.13-0.71]; Pâ=â.005). These main effects were consistent in intention-to-treat analyses and after multiple-testing correction. There was a positive, small-magnitude effect of exercise on total academic performance (mean z score: exercise group, 0.31 [95% CI, 0.18-0.44]; control group, 0.10 [95% CI, â0.04 to 0.24]; difference between groups, 0.21 SDs [95% CI, 0.01-0.40]; Pâ=â.03), which was partially mediated by cognitive flexibility. Inhibition, working memory, hippocampal volume, and other brain magnetic resonance imaging outcomes studied were not affected by the exercise program. The intervention increased cardiorespiratory fitness performance as indicated by longer treadmill time to exhaustion (mean z score: exercise group, 0.54 [95% CI, 0.27-0.82]; control group, 0.13 [95% CI, â0.16 to 0.41]; difference between groups, 0.42 SDs [95% CI, 0.01-0.82]; Pâ=â.04), and these changes in fitness mediated some of the effects (small percentage of mediation [approximately 10%-20%]). The effects of exercise were overall consistent across the moderators tested, except for larger improvements in intelligence among boys compared with girls.
Conclusions and Relevance In this randomized clinical trial, exercise positively affected intelligence and cognitive flexibility during development among children with overweight or obesity. However, the structural and functional brain changes responsible for these improvements were not identified
Perspectives on global mycotoxin issues and management from the mycokey maize working group
Open Access Article; Published online: 11 Sept 2020During the last decade, there have been many advances in research and technology that have greatly contributed to expanded capabilities and knowledge in detection and measurement, characterization, biosynthesis, and management of mycotoxins in maize. MycoKey, an EUâfunded Horizon 2020 project, was established to advance knowledge and technology transfer around the globe to address mycotoxins impacts in key food and feed chains. MycoKey included several working groups comprised of international experts in different fields of mycotoxicology. The MycoKey Maize Working Group recently convened to gather information and strategize for the development and implementation of solutions to the maize mycotoxin problem in light of current and emerging technologies. This feature summarizes the Maize WG discussion and recommendations for addressing mycotoxin problems in maize. Discussions focused on aflatoxins, deoxynivalenol, fumonisins, and zearalenone, which are the most widespread and persistently important mycotoxins in maize. Although regional differences were recognized, there was consensus about many of the priorities for research and effective management strategies. For pre-harvest management, genetic resistance and selecting adapted maize genotypes, along with insect management, were among the most fruitful strategies identified across the mycotoxin groups. For post-harvest management, the most important practices included timely harvest, rapid grain drying, grain cleaning, and carefully managed storage conditions. Remediation practices such as optical sorting, density separation, milling, and chemical detoxification were also suggested. Future research and communication priorities included advanced breeding technologies, development of risk assessment tools, and the development and dissemination of regionally relevant management guidelines
Search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying to a pair in events with no charged leptons and large missing transverse energy using the full CDF data set
We report on a search for the standard model Higgs boson produced in
association with a vector boson in the full data set of proton-antiproton
collisions at TeV recorded by the CDF II detector at the
Tevatron, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.45 fb. We
consider events having no identified charged lepton, a transverse energy
imbalance, and two or three jets, of which at least one is consistent with
originating from the decay of a quark. We place 95% credibility level upper
limits on the production cross section times standard model branching fraction
for several mass hypotheses between 90 and . For a Higgs
boson mass of , the observed (expected) limit is 6.7

We present a search for the standard model Higgs boson produced in
association with a W boson in sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV p-pbar collision data
collected with the CDF II detector at the Tevatron corresponding to an
integrated luminosity of 9.45 fb-1. In events consistent with the decay of the
Higgs boson to a bottom-quark pair and the W boson to an electron or muon and a
neutrino, we set 95% credibility level upper limits on the WH production cross
section times the H->bb branching ratio as a function of Higgs boson mass. At a
Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV/c2 we observe (expect) a limit of 4.9 (2.8) times

association with a Z boson in data collected with the CDF II detector at the
Tevatron, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.45/fb. In events
consistent with the decay of the Higgs boson to a bottom-quark pair and the Z
boson to electron or muon pairs, we set 95% credibility level upper limits on
the ZH production cross section times the H -> bb branching ratio as a function
of Higgs boson mass. At a Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV/c^2 we observe (expect) a

Search for a W' boson decaying to a bottom quark and a top quark in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
Results are presented from a search for a W' boson using a dataset
corresponding to 5.0 inverse femtobarns of integrated luminosity collected
during 2011 by the CMS experiment at the LHC in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV.
The W' boson is modeled as a heavy W boson, but different scenarios for the
couplings to fermions are considered, involving both left-handed and
right-handed chiral projections of the fermions, as well as an arbitrary
mixture of the two. The search is performed in the decay channel W' to t b,
leading to a final state signature with a single lepton (e, mu), missing
transverse energy, and jets, at least one of which is tagged as a b-jet. A W'
boson that couples to fermions with the same coupling constant as the W, but to
the right-handed rather than left-handed chiral projections, is excluded for
masses below 1.85 TeV at the 95% confidence level. For the first time using LHC
data, constraints on the W' gauge coupling for a set of left- and right-handed
coupling combinations have been placed. These results represent a significant

Search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying into two photons in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV
A search for a Higgs boson decaying into two photons is described. The
analysis is performed using a dataset recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC
from pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, which corresponds to an
integrated luminosity of 4.8 inverse femtobarns. Limits are set on the cross
section of the standard model Higgs boson decaying to two photons. The expected
exclusion limit at 95% confidence level is between 1.4 and 2.4 times the
standard model cross section in the mass range between 110 and 150 GeV. The
analysis of the data excludes, at 95% confidence level, the standard model
Higgs boson decaying into two photons in the mass range 128 to 132 GeV. The
largest excess of events above the expected standard model background is
observed for a Higgs boson mass hypothesis of 124 GeV with a local significance
of 3.1 sigma. The global significance of observing an excess with a local
significance greater than 3.1 sigma anywhere in the search range 110-150 GeV is
estimated to be 1.8 sigma. More data are required to ascertain the origin of
