    Optical techniques for 3D surface reconstruction in computer-assisted laparoscopic surgery

    One of the main challenges for computer-assisted surgery (CAS) is to determine the intra-opera- tive morphology and motion of soft-tissues. This information is prerequisite to the registration of multi-modal patient-specific data for enhancing the surgeon’s navigation capabilites by observ- ing beyond exposed tissue surfaces and for providing intelligent control of robotic-assisted in- struments. In minimally invasive surgery (MIS), optical techniques are an increasingly attractive approach for in vivo 3D reconstruction of the soft-tissue surface geometry. This paper reviews the state-of-the-art methods for optical intra-operative 3D reconstruction in laparoscopic surgery and discusses the technical challenges and future perspectives towards clinical translation. With the recent paradigm shift of surgical practice towards MIS and new developments in 3D opti- cal imaging, this is a timely discussion about technologies that could facilitate complex CAS procedures in dynamic and deformable anatomical regions

    3D Motion Analysis via Energy Minimization

    This work deals with 3D motion analysis from stereo image sequences for driver assistance systems. It consists of two parts: the estimation of motion from the image data and the segmentation of moving objects in the input images. The content can be summarized with the technical term machine visual kinesthesia, the sensation or perception and cognition of motion. In the first three chapters, the importance of motion information is discussed for driver assistance systems, for machine vision in general, and for the estimation of ego motion. The next two chapters delineate on motion perception, analyzing the apparent movement of pixels in image sequences for both a monocular and binocular camera setup. Then, the obtained motion information is used to segment moving objects in the input video. Thus, one can clearly identify the thread from analyzing the input images to describing the input images by means of stationary and moving objects. Finally, I present possibilities for future applications based on the contents of this thesis. Previous work in each case is presented in the respective chapters. Although the overarching issue of motion estimation from image sequences is related to practice, there is nothing as practical as a good theory (Kurt Lewin). Several problems in computer vision are formulated as intricate energy minimization problems. In this thesis, motion analysis in image sequences is thoroughly investigated, showing that splitting an original complex problem into simplified sub-problems yields improved accuracy, increased robustness, and a clear and accessible approach to state-of-the-art motion estimation techniques. In Chapter 4, optical flow is considered. Optical flow is commonly estimated by minimizing the combined energy, consisting of a data term and a smoothness term. These two parts are decoupled, yielding a novel and iterative approach to optical flow. The derived Refinement Optical Flow framework is a clear and straight-forward approach to computing the apparent image motion vector field. Furthermore this results currently in the most accurate motion estimation techniques in literature. Much as this is an engineering approach of fine-tuning precision to the last detail, it helps to get a better insight into the problem of motion estimation. This profoundly contributes to state-of-the-art research in motion analysis, in particular facilitating the use of motion estimation in a wide range of applications. In Chapter 5, scene flow is rethought. Scene flow stands for the three-dimensional motion vector field for every image pixel, computed from a stereo image sequence. Again, decoupling of the commonly coupled approach of estimating three-dimensional position and three dimensional motion yields an approach to scene ow estimation with more accurate results and a considerably lower computational load. It results in a dense scene flow field and enables additional applications based on the dense three-dimensional motion vector field, which are to be investigated in the future. One such application is the segmentation of moving objects in an image sequence. Detecting moving objects within the scene is one of the most important features to extract in image sequences from a dynamic environment. This is presented in Chapter 6. Scene flow and the segmentation of independently moving objects are only first steps towards machine visual kinesthesia. Throughout this work, I present possible future work to improve the estimation of optical flow and scene flow. Chapter 7 additionally presents an outlook on future research for driver assistance applications. But there is much more to the full understanding of the three-dimensional dynamic scene. This work is meant to inspire the reader to think outside the box and contribute to the vision of building perceiving machines.</em

    A particle filter to reconstruct a free-surface flow from a depth camera

    We investigate the combined use of a Kinect depth sensor and of a stochastic data assimilation method to recover free-surface flows. More specifically, we use a Weighted ensemble Kalman filter method to reconstruct the complete state of free-surface flows from a sequence of depth images only. This particle filter accounts for model and observations errors. This data assimilation scheme is enhanced with the use of two observations instead of one classically. We evaluate the developed approach on two numerical test cases: a collapse of a water column as a toy-example and a flow in an suddenly expanding flume as a more realistic flow. The robustness of the method to depth data errors and also to initial and inflow conditions is considered. We illustrate the interest of using two observations instead of one observation into the correction step, especially for unknown inflow boundary conditions. Then, the performance of the Kinect sensor to capture temporal sequences of depth observations is investigated. Finally, the efficiency of the algorithm is qualified for a wave in a real rectangular flat bottom tank. It is shown that for basic initial conditions, the particle filter rapidly and remarkably reconstructs velocity and height of the free surface flow based on noisy measurements of the elevation alone

    Combined Learned and Classical Methods for Real-Time Visual Perception in Autonomous Driving

    Autonomy, robotics, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are among the main defining themes of next-generation societies. Of the most important applications of said technologies is driving automation which spans from different Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) to full self-driving vehicles. Driving automation is promising to reduce accidents, increase safety, and increase access to mobility for more people such as the elderly and the handicapped. However, one of the main challenges facing autonomous vehicles is robust perception which can enable safe interaction and decision making. With so many sensors to perceive the environment, each with its own capabilities and limitations, vision is by far one of the main sensing modalities. Cameras are cheap and can provide rich information of the observed scene. Therefore, this dissertation develops a set of visual perception algorithms with a focus on autonomous driving as the target application area. This dissertation starts by addressing the problem of real-time motion estimation of an agent using only the visual input from a camera attached to it, a problem known as visual odometry. The visual odometry algorithm can achieve low drift rates over long-traveled distances. This is made possible through the innovative local mapping approach used. This visual odometry algorithm was then combined with my multi-object detection and tracking system. The tracking system operates in a tracking-by-detection paradigm where an object detector based on convolution neural networks (CNNs) is used. Therefore, the combined system can detect and track other traffic participants both in image domain and in 3D world frame while simultaneously estimating vehicle motion. This is a necessary requirement for obstacle avoidance and safe navigation. Finally, the operational range of traditional monocular cameras was expanded with the capability to infer depth and thus replace stereo and RGB-D cameras. This is accomplished through a single-stream convolution neural network which can output both depth prediction and semantic segmentation. Semantic segmentation is the process of classifying each pixel in an image and is an important step toward scene understanding.     Robust Estimation of Motion Parameters and Scene Geometry : Minimal Solvers and Convexification of Regularisers for Low-Rank Approximation

    In the dawning age of autonomous driving, accurate and robust tracking of vehicles is a quintessential part. This is inextricably linked with the problem of Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping (SLAM), in which one tries to determine the position of a vehicle relative to its surroundings without prior knowledge of them. The more you know about the object you wish to track—through sensors or mechanical construction—the more likely you are to get good positioning estimates. In the first part of this thesis, we explore new ways of improving positioning for vehicles travelling on a planar surface. This is done in several different ways: first, we generalise the work done for monocular vision to include two cameras, we propose ways of speeding up the estimation time with polynomial solvers, and we develop an auto-calibration method to cope with radially distorted images, without enforcing pre-calibration procedures.We continue to investigate the case of constrained motion—this time using auxiliary data from inertial measurement units (IMUs) to improve positioning of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The proposed methods improve the state-of-the-art for partially calibrated cases (with unknown focal length) for indoor navigation. Furthermore, we propose the first-ever real-time compatible minimal solver for simultaneous estimation of radial distortion profile, focal length, and motion parameters while utilising the IMU data.In the third and final part of this thesis, we develop a bilinear framework for low-rank regularisation, with global optimality guarantees under certain conditions. We also show equivalence between the linear and the bilinear framework, in the sense that the objectives are equal. This enables users of alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM)—or other subgradient or splitting methods—to transition to the new framework, while being able to enjoy the benefits of second order methods. Furthermore, we propose a novel regulariser fusing two popular methods. This way we are able to combine the best of two worlds by encouraging bias reduction while enforcing low-rank solutions

    Realtime Face Tracking and Animation

    Capturing and processing human geometry, appearance, and motion is at the core of computer graphics, computer vision, and human-computer interaction. The high complexity of human geometry and motion dynamics, and the high sensitivity of the human visual system to variations and subtleties in faces and bodies make the 3D acquisition and reconstruction of humans in motion a challenging task. Digital humans are often created through a combination of 3D scanning, appearance acquisition, and motion capture, leading to stunning results in recent feature films. However, these methods typically require complex acquisition systems and substantial manual post-processing. As a result, creating and animating high-quality digital avatars entails long turn-around times and substantial production costs. Recent technological advances in RGB-D devices, such as Microsoft Kinect, brought new hopes for realtime, portable, and affordable systems allowing to capture facial expressions as well as hand and body motions. RGB-D devices typically capture an image and a depth map. This permits to formulate the motion tracking problem as a 2D/3D non-rigid registration of a deformable model to the input data. We introduce a novel face tracking algorithm that combines geometry and texture registration with pre-recorded animation priors in a single optimization. This led to unprecedented face tracking quality on a low cost consumer level device. The main drawback of this approach in the context of consumer applications is the need for an offline user-specific training. Robust and efficient tracking is achieved by building an accurate 3D expression model of the user's face who is scanned in a predefined set of facial expressions. We extended this approach removing the need of a user-specific training or calibration, or any other form of manual assistance, by modeling online a 3D user-specific dynamic face model. In complement of a realtime face tracking and modeling algorithm, we developed a novel system for animation retargeting that allows learning a high-quality mapping between motion capture data and arbitrary target characters. We addressed one of the main challenges of existing example-based retargeting methods, the need for a large number of accurate training examples to define the correspondence between source and target expression spaces. We showed that this number can be significantly reduced by leveraging the information contained in unlabeled data, i.e. facial expressions in the source or target space without corresponding poses. Finally, we present a novel realtime physics-based animation technique allowing to simulate a large range of deformable materials such as fat, flesh, hair, or muscles. This approach could be used to produce more lifelike animations by enhancing the animated avatars with secondary effects. We believe that the realtime face tracking and animation pipeline presented in this thesis has the potential to inspire numerous future research in the area of computer-generated animation.     Estimating general motion and intensity from event cameras

    Robotic vision algorithms have become widely used in many consumer products which enabled technologies such as autonomous vehicles, drones, augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) devices to name a few. These applications require vision algorithms to work in real-world environments with extreme lighting variations and fast moving objects. However, robotic vision applications rely often on standard video cameras which face severe limitations in fast-moving scenes or by bright light sources which diminish the image quality with artefacts like motion blur or over-saturation. To address these limitations, the body of work presented here investigates the use of alternative sensor devices which mimic the superior perception properties of human vision. Such silicon retinas were proposed by neuromorphic engineering, and we focus here on one such biologically inspired sensor called the event camera which offers a new camera paradigm for real-time robotic vision. The camera provides a high measurement rate, low latency, high dynamic range, and low data rate. The signal of the camera is composed of a stream of asynchronous events at microsecond resolution. Each event indicates when individual pixels registers a logarithmic intensity changes of a pre-set threshold size. Using this novel signal has proven to be very challenging in most computer vision problems since common vision methods require synchronous absolute intensity information. In this thesis, we present for the first time a method to reconstruct an image and es- timation motion from an event stream without additional sensing or prior knowledge of the scene. This method is based on coupled estimations of both motion and intensity which enables our event-based analysis, which was previously only possible with severe limitations. We also present the first machine learning algorithm for event-based unsu- pervised intensity reconstruction which does not depend on an explicit motion estimation and reveals finer image details. This learning approach does not rely on event-to-image examples, but learns from standard camera image examples which are not coupled to the event data. In experiments we show that the learned reconstruction improves upon our handcrafted approach. Finally, we combine our learned approach with motion estima- tion methods and show the improved intensity reconstruction also significantly improves the motion estimation results. We hope our work in this thesis bridges the gap between the event signal and images and that it opens event cameras to practical solutions to overcome the current limitations of frame-based cameras in robotic vision.Open Acces
