Integrating information and knowledge for enterprise innovation
It has widely been accepted that enterprise integration, can be a source of socio-technical and cultural problems within organisations wishing to provide a focussed end-to-end business service. This can cause possible âstraitjacketingâ of business process architectures, thus suppressing responsive business re-engineering and competitive advantage for some companies. Accordingly, the current typology and emergent forms of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) technologies are set in the context of understanding information and knowledge integration philosophies. As such, key influences and trends in emerging IS integration choices, for end-to-end, cost-effective and flexible knowledge integration, are examined. As touch points across and outside organisations proliferate, via work-flow and relationship management-driven value innovation, aspects of knowledge refinement and knowledge integration pose challenges to maximising the potential of innovation and sustainable success, within enterprises. This is in terms of the increasing propensity for data fragmentation and the lack of effective information management, in the light of information overload. Furthermore, the nature of IS mediation which is inherent within decision making and workflow-based business processes, provides the basis for evaluation of the effects of information and knowledge integration. Hence, the authors propose a conceptual, holistic evaluation framework which encompasses these ideas. It is thus argued that such trends, and their implications regarding enterprise IS integration to engender sustainable competitive advantage, require fundamental re-thinking
Joint in-network video rate adaptation and measurement-based admission control: algorithm design and evaluation
The important new revenue opportunities that multimedia services offer to network and service providers come with important management challenges. For providers, it is important to control the video quality that is offered and perceived by the user, typically known as the quality of experience (QoE). Both admission control and scalable video coding techniques can control the QoE by blocking connections or adapting the video rate but influence each other's performance. In this article, we propose an in-network video rate adaptation mechanism that enables a provider to define a policy on how the video rate adaptation should be performed to maximize the provider's objective (e.g., a maximization of revenue or QoE). We discuss the need for a close interaction of the video rate adaptation algorithm with a measurement based admission control system, allowing to effectively orchestrate both algorithms and timely switch from video rate adaptation to the blocking of connections. We propose two different rate adaptation decision algorithms that calculate which videos need to be adapted: an optimal one in terms of the provider's policy and a heuristic based on the utility of each connection. Through an extensive performance evaluation, we show the impact of both algorithms on the rate adaptation, network utilisation and the stability of the video rate adaptation. We show that both algorithms outperform other configurations with at least 10 %. Moreover, we show that the proposed heuristic is about 500 times faster than the optimal algorithm and experiences only a performance drop of approximately 2 %, given the investigated video delivery scenario
Effects of user experience on user resistance to change to the voice user interface of an inâvehicle infotainment system: Implications for platform and standards competition
This study examines the effects of user experience on user resistance to changeâparticularly, on the relationship between user resistance to change and its antecedents (i.e. switching costs and perceived value) in the context of the voice user interface of an in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) system. This research offers several salient findings. First, it shows that user experience positively moderates the relationship between uncertainty costs (one type of switching cost) and user resistance. It also negatively moderates the association between perceived value and user resistance. Second, the research test results demonstrate that users with a high degree of prior experience with the voice user interface of other smart devices exhibit low user resistance to change to the voice user interface in an IVI system. Third, we show that three types of switching costs (transition costs, in particular) may directly influence users to resist a change to the voice user interface. Fourth, our test results empirically demonstrate that both switching costs and perceived value affect user resistance to change in the context of an IVI system, which differs from the traditional IS research setting (i.e. enterprise systems). These findings may guide not only platform leaders in designing user interfaces, user experiences, and marketing strategies, but also firms that want to defend themselves from platform envelopment while devising defensive strategies in platform and standards competition
Operational Research in Education
Operational Research (OR) techniques have been applied, from the early stages of the discipline, to a wide variety of issues in education. At the government level, these include questions of what resources should be allocated to education as a whole and how these should be divided amongst the individual sectors of education and the institutions within the sectors. Another pertinent issue concerns the efficient operation of institutions, how to measure it, and whether resource allocation can be used to incentivise efficiency savings. Local governments, as well as being concerned with issues of resource allocation, may also need to make decisions regarding, for example, the creation and location of new institutions or closure of existing ones, as well as the day-to-day logistics of getting pupils to schools. Issues of concern for managers within schools and colleges include allocating the budgets, scheduling lessons and the assignment of students to courses. This survey provides an overview of the diverse problems faced by government, managers and consumers of education, and the OR techniques which have typically been applied in an effort to improve operations and provide solutions
Whom to Ask? Jury Selection for Decision Making Tasks on Micro-blog Services
It is universal to see people obtain knowledge on micro-blog services by
asking others decision making questions. In this paper, we study the Jury
Selection Problem(JSP) by utilizing crowdsourcing for decision making tasks on
micro-blog services. Specifically, the problem is to enroll a subset of crowd
under a limited budget, whose aggregated wisdom via Majority Voting scheme has
the lowest probability of drawing a wrong answer(Jury Error Rate-JER). Due to
various individual error-rates of the crowd, the calculation of JER is
non-trivial. Firstly, we explicitly state that JER is the probability when the
number of wrong jurors is larger than half of the size of a jury. To avoid the
exponentially increasing calculation of JER, we propose two efficient
algorithms and an effective bounding technique. Furthermore, we study the Jury
Selection Problem on two crowdsourcing models, one is for altruistic
users(AltrM) and the other is for incentive-requiring users(PayM) who require
extra payment when enrolled into a task. For the AltrM model, we prove the
monotonicity of JER on individual error rate and propose an efficient exact
algorithm for JSP. For the PayM model, we prove the NP-hardness of JSP on PayM
and propose an efficient greedy-based heuristic algorithm. Finally, we conduct
a series of experiments to investigate the traits of JSP, and validate the
efficiency and effectiveness of our proposed algorithms on both synthetic and

Optimal Virtualized Inter-Tenant Resource Sharing for Device-to-Device Communications in 5G Networks
Device-to-Device (D2D) communication is expected to enable a number of new
services and applications in future mobile networks and has attracted
significant research interest over the last few years. Remarkably, little
attention has been placed on the issue of D2D communication for users belonging
to different operators. In this paper, we focus on this aspect for D2D users
that belong to different tenants (virtual network operators), assuming
virtualized and programmable future 5G wireless networks. Under the assumption
of a cross-tenant orchestrator, we show that significant gains can be achieved
in terms of network performance by optimizing resource sharing from the
different tenants, i.e., slices of the substrate physical network topology. To
this end, a sum-rate optimization framework is proposed for optimal sharing of
the virtualized resources. Via a wide site of numerical investigations, we
prove the efficacy of the proposed solution and the achievable gains compared
