Peculiarities of the formation of scincillation response in organic materials with stochastic character of light propagation
The paper examines the possibility of using an organic polycrystal as the “opaque” scintillator. Polycrystals are produced by pressing crystalline grains. When light propagates through a polycrystal, it is repeatedly reflected and refracted at the boundaries of the grains. This makes its propagation difficult. We studied the light output and optical transmittance of stilbene and p-terphenyl polycrystals with different fractions of crystalline grain: from 0.06…0.1 to 2.0…2.5 mm (the samples 20 mm in diameter and 2 mm in height) was conducted. Modelling of light propagation in polycrystalline samples of stilbene and p-terphenyl was carried out and the values of the light collection coefficients were calculated. It was found that in order to obtain the polycrystalline samples with sufficiently high light output and high efficiency of detection of local sites of interaction of ionizing radiations, grains in the range of 0.4…0.8 mm should be used.
Early carboniferous brachiopod faunas from the Baoshan block, west Yunnan, southwest China
38 brachiopod species in 27 genera and subgenera are described from the Yudong Formation in the Shidian-Baoshan area, west Yunnan, southwest China. New taxa include two new subgenera: Unispirifer (Septimispirifer) and Brachythyrina (Longathyrina), and seven new species: Eomarginifera yunnanensis, Marginatia cylindrica, Unispirifer (Unispirifer) xiangshanensis, Unispirifer (Septimispirifer) wafangjieensis, Brachythyrina (Brachythyrina) transversa, Brachythyrina (Longathyrina) baoshanensis, and Girtyella wafangjieensis. Based on the described material and constraints from associated coral and conodont faunas, the age of the brachiopod fauna from the Yudon Formation is considered late Tournaisian (Early Carboniferous), with a possibility extending into earlyViseacutean.<br /
Measurement of event-shape observables in Z→ℓ+ℓ− events in pp collisions at √ s=7 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC
Event-shape observables measured using charged particles in inclusive
-boson events are presented, using the electron and muon decay modes of the
bosons. The measurements are based on an integrated luminosity of of proton--proton collisions recorded by the ATLAS detector at the
LHC at a centre-of-mass energy TeV. Charged-particle
distributions, excluding the lepton--antilepton pair from the -boson decay,
are measured in different ranges of transverse momentum of the boson.
Distributions include multiplicity, scalar sum of transverse momenta, beam
thrust, transverse thrust, spherocity, and -parameter, which are
in particular sensitive to properties of the underlying event at small values
of the -boson transverse momentum. The Sherpa event generator shows larger
deviations from the measured observables than Pythia8 and Herwig7. Typically,
all three Monte Carlo generators provide predictions that are in better
agreement with the data at high -boson transverse momenta than at low
-boson transverse momenta and for the observables that are less sensitive to
the number of charged particles in the event.Comment: 36 pages plus author list + cover page (54 pages total), 14 figures,

Dewoński rodzaj Poloniproductus nov. (brachiopoda)
A new devonoproductid genus Poloniproductus is described with the Eifelian Productella varians Biernat, 1966 as a type species. The Devonoproductinae Muir-Wood et Cooper are elevated to the familial rank. Taxonomic and evolutionary aspects of the genus and family are briefly discussed.
