Measuring Permissiveness in Parity Games: Mean-Payoff Parity Games Revisited
We study nondeterministic strategies in parity games with the aim of
computing a most permissive winning strategy. Following earlier work, we
measure permissiveness in terms of the average number/weight of transitions
blocked by the strategy. Using a translation into mean-payoff parity games, we
prove that the problem of computing (the permissiveness of) a most permissive
winning strategy is in NP intersected coNP. Along the way, we provide a new
study of mean-payoff parity games. In particular, we prove that the opponent
player has a memoryless optimal strategy and give a new algorithm for solving

Measuring proper motions of isolated neutron stars with Chandra
The excellent spatial resolution of the Chandra observatory offers the
unprecedented possibility to measure proper motions at X-ray wavelength with
relatively high accuracy using as reference the background of extragalactic or
remote galactic X-ray sources. We took advantage of this capability to
constrain the proper motion of RX J0806.4-4123 and RX J0420.0-5022, two X-ray
bright and radio quiet isolated neutron stars (INSs) discovered by ROSAT and
lacking an optical counterpart. In this paper, we present results from a
preliminary analysis from which we derive 2 sigma upper limits of 76 mas/yr and
138 mas/yr on the proper motions of RX J0806.4-4123 and RX J0420.0-5022
respectively. We use these values together with those of other ROSAT discovered
INSs to constrain the origin, distance and evolutionary status of this
particular group of objects. We find that the tangential velocities of radio
quiet ROSAT neutron stars are probably consistent with those of 'normal'
pulsars. Their distribution on the sky and, for those having accurate proper
motion vectors, their possible birth places, all point to a local population,
probably created in the part of the Gould Belt nearest to the earth.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, to appear in Astrophysics and Space Science, in

From Network Structure to Dynamics and Back Again: Relating dynamical stability and connection topology in biological complex systems
The recent discovery of universal principles underlying many complex networks
occurring across a wide range of length scales in the biological world has
spurred physicists in trying to understand such features using techniques from
statistical physics and non-linear dynamics. In this paper, we look at a few
examples of biological networks to see how similar questions can come up in
very different contexts. We review some of our recent work that looks at how
network structure (e.g., its connection topology) can dictate the nature of its
dynamics, and conversely, how dynamical considerations constrain the network
structure. We also see how networks occurring in nature can evolve to modular
configurations as a result of simultaneously trying to satisfy multiple
structural and dynamical constraints. The resulting optimal networks possess
hubs and have heterogeneous degree distribution similar to those seen in

Exotic clouds in the local interstellar medium
The neutral interstellar medium (ISM) inside the Local Bubble (LB) has been
known to have properties typical of the warm neutral medium (WNM). However,
several recent neutral hydrogen (HI) absorption experiments show evidence for
the existence of at least several cold diffuse clouds inside or at the boundary
of the LB, with properties highly unusual relative to the traditional cold
neutral medium. These cold clouds have a low HI column density, and AU-scale
sizes. As the kinematics of cold and warm gas inside the LB are similar, this
suggests a possibility of all these different flavors of the local ISM
belonging to the same interstellar flow. The co-existence of warm and cold
phases inside the LB is exciting as it can be used to probe the thermal
pressure inside the LB. In addition to cold clouds, several discrete screens of
ionized scattering material are clearly located inside the LB.
The cold exotic clouds inside the LB are most likely long-lived, and we
expect many more clouds with similar properties to be discovered in the future
with more sensitive radio observations. While physical mechanisms responsible
for the production of such clouds are still poorly understood, dynamical
triggering of phase conversion and/or interstellar turbulence are likely to

Current status of turbulent dynamo theory: From large-scale to small-scale dynamos
Several recent advances in turbulent dynamo theory are reviewed. High
resolution simulations of small-scale and large-scale dynamo action in periodic
domains are compared with each other and contrasted with similar results at low
magnetic Prandtl numbers. It is argued that all the different cases show
similarities at intermediate length scales. On the other hand, in the presence
of helicity of the turbulence, power develops on large scales, which is not
present in non-helical small-scale turbulent dynamos. At small length scales,
differences occur in connection with the dissipation cutoff scales associated
with the respective value of the magnetic Prandtl number. These differences are
found to be independent of whether or not there is large-scale dynamo action.
However, large-scale dynamos in homogeneous systems are shown to suffer from
resistive slow-down even at intermediate length scales. The results from
simulations are connected to mean field theory and its applications. Recent
work on helicity fluxes to alleviate large-scale dynamo quenching, shear
dynamos, nonlocal effects and magnetic structures from strong density
stratification are highlighted. Several insights which arise from analytic

The Chandra Deep Wide-field Survey: A New Chandra Legacy Survey in the Boötes Field. I. X-Ray Point Source Catalog, Number Counts, and Multiwavelength Counterparts
We present a new, ambitious survey performed with the Chandra X-ray Observatory of the 9.3 deg2 Boötes field of the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey. The wide field probes a statistically representative volume of the universe at high redshift. The Chandra Deep Wide-field Survey exploits the excellent sensitivity and angular resolution of Chandra over a wide area, combining 281 observations spanning 15 yr, for a total exposure time of 3.4 Ms, and detects 6891 X-ray point sources down to limiting fluxes of 4.7 × 10−16, 1.5 × 10−16, and 9 ×10−16 erg cm−2 s−1 in the 0.5–7, 0.5–2, and 2–7 keV bands, respectively. The robustness and reliability of the detection strategy are validated through extensive, state-of-the-art simulations of the whole field. Accurate number counts, in good agreement with previous X-ray surveys, are derived thanks to the uniquely large number of point sources detected, which resolve 65.0% ± 12.8% of the cosmic X-ray background between 0.5 and 2 keV and 81.0% ± 11.5% between 2 and 7 keV. Exploiting the wealth of multiwavelength data available on the field, we assign redshifts to ~94% of the X-ray sources, estimate their obscuration, and derive absorption-corrected luminosities. We provide an electronic catalog containing all of the relevant quantities needed for future investigations
A low CO2-responsive mutant of Setaria viridis reveals that reduced carbonic anhydrase limits C4 photosynthesis
In C4 species, β-carbonic anhydrase (CA), localized to the cytosol of the mesophyll cells, accelerates the interconversion of CO2 to HCO3–, the substrate used by phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC) in the first step of C4 photosynthesis. Here we describe the identification and characterization of low CO2-responsive mutant 1 (lcr1) isolated from an N-nitroso-N-methylurea- (NMU) treated Setaria viridis mutant population. Forward genetic investigation revealed that the mutated gene Sevir.5G247800 of lcr1 possessed a single nucleotide transition from cytosine to thymine in a β-CA gene causing an amino acid change from leucine to phenylalanine. This resulted in severe reduction in growth and photosynthesis in the mutant. Both the CO2 compensation point and carbon isotope discrimination values of the mutant were significantly increased. Growth of the mutants was stunted when grown under ambient pCO2 but recovered at elevated pCO2. Further bioinformatics analyses revealed that the mutation has led to functional changes in one of the conserved residues of the protein, situated near the catalytic site. CA transcript accumulation in the mutant was 80% lower, CA protein accumulation 30% lower, and CA activity ~98% lower compared with the wild type. Changes in the abundance of other primary C4 pathway enzymes were observed; accumulation of PEPC protein was significantly increased and accumulation of malate dehydrogenase and malic enzyme decreased. The reduction of CA protein activity and abundance in lcr1 restricts the supply of bicarbonate to PEPC, limiting C4 photosynthesis and growth. This study establishes Sevir.5G247800 as the major CA allele in Setaria for C4 photosynthesis and provides important insights into the function of CA in C4 photosynthesis that would be required to generate a rice plant with a functional C4 biochemical pathway
Search for a W' boson decaying to a bottom quark and a top quark in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
Results are presented from a search for a W' boson using a dataset
corresponding to 5.0 inverse femtobarns of integrated luminosity collected
during 2011 by the CMS experiment at the LHC in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV.
The W' boson is modeled as a heavy W boson, but different scenarios for the
couplings to fermions are considered, involving both left-handed and
right-handed chiral projections of the fermions, as well as an arbitrary
mixture of the two. The search is performed in the decay channel W' to t b,
leading to a final state signature with a single lepton (e, mu), missing
transverse energy, and jets, at least one of which is tagged as a b-jet. A W'
boson that couples to fermions with the same coupling constant as the W, but to
the right-handed rather than left-handed chiral projections, is excluded for
masses below 1.85 TeV at the 95% confidence level. For the first time using LHC
data, constraints on the W' gauge coupling for a set of left- and right-handed
coupling combinations have been placed. These results represent a significant

Search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying into two photons in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV
A search for a Higgs boson decaying into two photons is described. The
analysis is performed using a dataset recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC
from pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, which corresponds to an
integrated luminosity of 4.8 inverse femtobarns. Limits are set on the cross
section of the standard model Higgs boson decaying to two photons. The expected
exclusion limit at 95% confidence level is between 1.4 and 2.4 times the
standard model cross section in the mass range between 110 and 150 GeV. The
analysis of the data excludes, at 95% confidence level, the standard model
Higgs boson decaying into two photons in the mass range 128 to 132 GeV. The
largest excess of events above the expected standard model background is
observed for a Higgs boson mass hypothesis of 124 GeV with a local significance
of 3.1 sigma. The global significance of observing an excess with a local
significance greater than 3.1 sigma anywhere in the search range 110-150 GeV is
estimated to be 1.8 sigma. More data are required to ascertain the origin of
