    Bridging The Divide: Second Language Teachers, Pedagogy, Content Knowledge, And Technology

    Abstract This study examines the use of technology, pedagogy and content knowledge with second language teachers, and comparing Title 1 and non Title 1 schools. Technology can be used to provide unique learning opportunities for second language learners. Second language students can benefit from technology by practicing skills, increasing motivation, providing authentic materials, creating interaction between students, teachers and peers, creating individual learning, encouraging global understanding and increasing communication in safe ways (Lai & Kritsonsis, 2006). Although technology shows promise for increasing second language student achievement, students continue to have varied access at home, perpetuating the digital divide that was thought to disappear with large financial investments. By looking at how K-12 second language teachers use technology and the differences that exist between title I and non-title I schools this study will serve to assess the current state of technology integration and offer suggestions to enhance future integration.     Factors Influencing the Development and Evolution of Remembering Interactions

    This dissertation examines the concept of memory from the perspective of a natural science of behavior. In making this analysis, the philosophy of Interbehaviorism and system of Interbehavioral Psychology are described. Further, perspectives on memorial interactions in psychology in general, and behavior analysis in particular are examined. A number of implications and limitations of these perspectives are exposed. An alternative conceptualization of memory, derived from a natural science of behavior, is described, along with a comprehensive review of memorial interactions. Included in this review are memorial interactions of the remembering, reminiscing, and memorizing types. The aim of this analysis is to provide a naturalistic approach to memorial interactions of various sorts, such that future work may be pursued from this foundation. An experimental analysis of remembering interactions is explored, and results are reviewed. The implications of the data are considered and future conceptual and experimental work is suggested. Such studies are of importance within the analysis of behavior, as they expand the scope of events available for investigation, and facilitate an understanding of complex psychological happenings within a thoroughly naturalistic framework

    Fixed Points of Functions below the Line y = x

    This paper concerns fixed points of functions whose graphs lie on or below the line y = x. Using the Monotone Convergence Theorem, we show that positive fixed points of such functions are β€œattracting on the right” so long as we include a couple of further assumptions about these functions near their fixed points. As an illustrative example, we confirm that this is the case for the function y = x sin x; the positive fixed points of this function β€œattract on the right” and β€œrepel on the left.” Further, we generalize by showing that differentiability is in fact not needed to conclude that a fixed point is attracting on the right. Continuing in this direction, we identify a class of discontinuous functions whose fixed points are attracting on the right

    Low-Code as Enabler of Digital Transformation in Manufacturing Industry

    [EN] Currently, enterprises have to make quick and resilient responses to changing market requirements. In light of this, low-code development platforms provide the technology mechanisms to facilitate and automate the development of software applications to support current enterprise needs and promote digital transformation. Based on a theory-building research methodology through the literature and other information sources review, the main contribution of this paper is the current characterisation of the emerging low-code domain following the foundations of the computer-aided software engineering field. A context analysis, focused on the current status of research related to the low-code development platforms, is performed. Moreover, benchmarking among the existing low-code development platforms addressed to manufacturing industry is analysed to identify the current lacking features.     Addressing Risks of Lead in Water and Soil: Using Citizen Science and a Unique Partnership with Faith Organizations

    One of the most widespread environmental health hazards in the United States remains exposure to the harmful neurotoxin lead. So much lead remains in the urban environment that it is not unusual to find neighborhoods where more than 10% of children exhibit harmful levels of lead, compared to the national average of about 1%. To overcome this challenge, a partnership between IUPUI researchers and faith organizations in Indianapolis is taking aim at the risk of household lead contamination by providing residents the tools they need to protect against it. The community-driven science aspect of this project is intentionalβ€”not only will the individuals who participate benefit directly, but the resulting data will also play a role in keeping communities safer more broadly

    Protein toxins confer a defense against predation/grazing or a superior pathogenic competence upon the producing organism. Such toxins have been perfected through evolution in poisonous animals/plants and pathogenic bacteria. Over the past five decades, a lot of effort has been invested in studying their mechanism of action, the way they contribute to pathogenicity and in the development of antidotes that neutralize their action. In parallel, many research groups turned to explore the pharmaceutical potential of such toxins when they are used to efficiently impair essential cellular processes and/or damage the integrity of their target cells. The following review summarizes major advances in the field of toxin based therapeutics and offers a comprehensive description of the mode of action of each applied toxin

    A review of literature on the use of clickers in the business and management discipline

    YesClassroom response systems (clickers), in their various forms, are widely used across disciplines, demonstrating effectiveness across a range of different educational settings. However, only a few literature reviews on this technology have been undertaken in general, and no review has yet been performed on this topic in the business and management context. Realising the existing research gap, this article reviews 33 clicker-related studies from the business and management discipline that are largely focused on student perceptions and outcomes. The purpose of this paper is to provide a critical and balanced review of articles from the business and management discipline on various themes such as learner's engagement, performance, learning, participation, satisfaction, feedback, attendance, enjoyability, motivation, and interactivity, to name a few. The review also provides a brief account of lessons learned from the literature published in other disciplines and recommendations provided by studies from the business and management discipline
