    La5Ti2Cu1-xAgxS5O7 photocathodes operating at positive potentials during photoelectrochemical hydrogen evolution under irradiation of up to 710 nm

    A photoelectrochemical (PEC) cell based on a series-connected photocathode and photoanode made of particulate semiconductors is a potentially scalable and inexpensive device for renewable solar hydrogen production via PEC water splitting without any external power supply. The realisation of such PEC devices hinges on the development of photoelectrodes that operate at a small applied voltage. In this study, solid solutions of La5Ti2CuS5O7 (LTC) and La5Ti2AgS5O7 (LTA) were synthesised, and their physical, optical, and PEC properties in the water splitting reaction were discussed. LTC and LTA formed a La5Ti2Cu1-xAgxS5O7 solid solution (LTC(1-x)A(x)) over the whole compositional range. The indirect bandgap energy of LTC(1-x)A(x) changed nonlinearly with respect to composition, attaining its minimum value (ca. 1.8 eV) at a composition of x approximate to 0.16. Photoelectrodes of Al-doped LTC(1-x)A(x) solid solution powder fabricated using the particle transfer method exhibited a photocathodic response regardless of the Ag content. 1% Al-LTC(0.9)A(0.1) photocathodes exhibited the best PEC properties in the hydrogen evolution reaction and yielded a hypothetical half-cell solar-to-hydrogen energy conversion efficiency of 0.25% at +0.6 V vs. RHE, three times higher than the previously reported 1% Sc-LTC. In addition, 1% Al-LTC(0.9)A(0.1) photocathodes were fairly stable at + 0.7 V vs. RHE without any protective modifications. Owing to the positive operational electrode potential of 1% Al-LTC(0.9)A(0.1), unassisted PEC water splitting was accomplished using series-connected photoelectrodes made of 1% Al-LTC(0.9)A(0.1) and BaTaO2N, particulate semiconductors with absorption edge wavelengths of 710 and 660 nm, respectively, at a Faradaic efficiency of unity and a solar-to-hydrogen energy conversion efficiency of approximately 0.1%.ArticleEnergy & Environmental Science.8(11):3354-3362(2015)journal articl

    Molecular phylogeny of the rotifers with two Indonesian Brachionus lineages

    The rotifer Brachionus plicatilis is an ecologically and commercially important species, and has been studied in various fields such as population dynamics, ecotoxicology and aging. However, recent studies have revealed that the B. plicatilis lineages involve an unknown number of cryptic species, and the group has been regarded as the Brachionus complex. One cause of this complicated taxonomy is the lack of surveys in the tropical zone, which is characterized by enormous species-richness. Accordingly, in this study we collected two Brachionus rotifers from the Sumatra and Sulawesi Islands, Indonesia, and determined their partial nucleotide sequences of mitochondrial DNA cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene. Subsequently, we constructed molecular phylogenetic trees with fourteen species/lineages from four genera including the two Indonesian rotifers. The two Indonesian Brachionus rotifers were respectively found to be phylogenetically close to B. ibericus and B. rotundiformis. On the other hand, Japanese B. plicatilis was suggested to be phylogenetically closer to B. Manjavacas, which is proposed to be a new species, than to Spanish B. plicatilis. These results imply that the current taxonomy of the Brachionus is problematic, and a major revision is necessary to establish a reliable taxonomy of this group

    Primitive Duplicate Hox Clusters in the European Eel's Genome

    The enigmatic life cycle and elongated body of the European eel (Anguilla anguilla L., 1758) have long motivated scientific enquiry. Recently, eel research has gained in urgency, as the population has dwindled to the point of critical endangerment. We have assembled a draft genome in order to facilitate advances in all provinces of eel biology. Here, we use the genome to investigate the eel's complement of the Hox developmental transcription factors. We show that unlike any other teleost fish, the eel retains fully populated, duplicate Hox clusters, which originated at the teleost-specific genome duplication. Using mRNA-sequencing and in situ hybridizations, we demonstrate that all copies are expressed in early embryos. Theories of vertebrate evolution predict that the retention of functional, duplicate Hox genes can give rise to additional developmental complexity, which is not immediately apparent in the adult. However, the key morphological innovation elsewhere in the eel's life history coincides with the evolutionary origin of its Hox repertoire

    Search for dark matter produced in association with bottom or top quarks in √s = 13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    A search for weakly interacting massive particle dark matter produced in association with bottom or top quarks is presented. Final states containing third-generation quarks and miss- ing transverse momentum are considered. The analysis uses 36.1 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at √s = 13 TeV in 2015 and 2016. No significant excess of events above the estimated backgrounds is observed. The results are in- terpreted in the framework of simplified models of spin-0 dark-matter mediators. For colour- neutral spin-0 mediators produced in association with top quarks and decaying into a pair of dark-matter particles, mediator masses below 50 GeV are excluded assuming a dark-matter candidate mass of 1 GeV and unitary couplings. For scalar and pseudoscalar mediators produced in association with bottom quarks, the search sets limits on the production cross- section of 300 times the predicted rate for mediators with masses between 10 and 50 GeV and assuming a dark-matter mass of 1 GeV and unitary coupling. Constraints on colour- charged scalar simplified models are also presented. Assuming a dark-matter particle mass of 35 GeV, mediator particles with mass below 1.1 TeV are excluded for couplings yielding a dark-matter relic density consistent with measurements
