A screen-printed carbon electrode modified with a chitosan-based film for in situ heavy metal ions measurement
SEM images and FTIR data of the working electrode surface showed that Mn+ ions were adsorbed on chitosan (Chit) and crosslinked chitosan-carbon nanotube (Chit-CNT) films. XPS revealed that chelation of Mn+ ions with the –NH2/–OH groups from chitosan, –COOH group from carbon nanotubes, and aqua ligands represents a possible structure of the active Mn+ species in the Chit-based film. The electrochemical behaviors of the Chit-based film modified screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) were characterized for individual and simultaneous detection of Cu2+, Pb2+, Hg2+, Zn2+, Cd2+, and As3+ ions. For individual detection, the concentration range was 0.50–3.00 ppm with a detection limit of 0.4 ppm for Cu2+; 1.0–4.0 ppm with a detection limit of 0.5 ppm for Pb2+; 1.0–5.0 ppm with a detection limit of 0.8 ppm for Hg2+. For simultaneous detection, the lab chip sensor was successfully used to determine the concentrations of Pb2+, Cu2+, Hg2+, and As3+ ions simultaneously
Superior effects of modified chen-style Tai Chi versus 24-style Tai Chi on cognitive function, fitness, and balance performance in adults over 55
© 2019 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. Background: Cognitive decline and balance impairment are prevalent in the aging population. Previous studies investigated the beneficial effects of 24-style Tai Chi (TC-24) on either cognitive function or balance performance of older adults. It still remains largely unknown whether modified Chen-style TC (MTC) that includes 18 complex movements is more beneficial for these age-related health outcomes, as compared to TC-24. Objective: We investigated if MTC would show greater effects than TC-24 on global cognitive function and balance-related outcomes among older adults. Methods: We conducted a randomized trial where 80 eligible adults aged over 55 were allocated into two different styles of Tai Chi (TC) arms (sixty-minute session × three times per week, 12 weeks). Outcome assessments were performed at three time periods (baseline, Week 6, and Week 12) and included the Chinese Version of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) for overall cognitive function, One-leg Standing Test (LST) for static balance, Timed Up and Go Test (TUGT) for dynamic balance, chair Stand Test (CST) for leg power, and the six-meter Walk Test (6MWT) for aerobic exercise capacity. Results: Compared to TC-24 arm, MTC arm demonstrated significantly greater improvements in MoCA, LST, TUGT, CST, and 6MWT (all p \u3c 0.05). Conclusions: Both forms of TC were effective in enhancing global cognitive function, balance, and fitness. Furthermore, MTC was more effective than TC-24 in enhancing these health-related parameters in an aging population
Urban energy consumption and CO2 emissions in Beijing: current and future
This paper calculates the energy consumption and CO2 emissions of Beijing over 2005–2011 in light of the Beijing’s energy balance table and the carbon emission coefficients of IPCC. Furthermore, based on a series of energy conservation planning program issued in Beijing, the Long-range Energy Alternatives Planning System (LEAP)-BJ model is developed to study the energy consumption and CO2 emissions of Beijing’s six end-use sectors and the energy conversion sector over 2012–2030 under the BAU scenario and POL scenario. Some results are found in this research: (1) During 2005–2011, the energy consumption kept increasing, while the total CO2 emissions fluctuated obviously in 2008 and 2011. The energy structure and the industrial structure have been optimized to a certain extent. (2) If the policies are completely implemented, the POL scenario is projected to save 21.36 and 35.37 % of the total energy consumption and CO2 emissions than the BAU scenario during 2012 and 2030. (3) The POL scenario presents a more optimized energy structure compared with the BAU scenario, with the decrease of coal consumption and the increase of natural gas consumption. (4) The commerce and service sector and the energy conversion sector will become the largest contributor to energy consumption and CO2 emissions, respectively. The transport sector and the industrial sector are the two most potential sectors in energy savings and carbon reduction. In terms of subscenarios, the energy conservation in transport (TEC) is the most effective one. (5) The macroparameters, such as the GDP growth rate and the industrial structure, have great influence on the urban energy consumption and carbon emissions
Droplet-like Fermi surfaces in the anti-ferromagnetic phase of EuFeAs, an Fe-pnictide superconductor parent compound
Using angle resolved photoemission it is shown that the low lying electronic
states of the iron pnictide parent compound EuFeAs are strongly
modified in the magnetically ordered, low temperature, orthorhombic state
compared to the tetragonal, paramagnetic case above the spin density wave
transition temperature. Back-folded bands, reflected in the orthorhombic/
anti-ferromagnetic Brillouin zone boundary hybridize strongly with the
non-folded states, leading to the opening of energy gaps. As a direct
consequence, the large Fermi surfaces of the tetragonal phase fragment, the low
temperature Fermi surface being comprised of small droplets, built up of
electron and hole-like sections. These high resolution ARPES data are therefore
in keeping with quantum oscillation and optical data from other undoped
pnictide parent compounds.Comment: 4 figures, 6 page
Low penetrance of retinoblastoma for p.V654L mutation of the RB1 gene
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Retinoblastoma is caused by compound heterozygosity or homozygosity of retinoblastoma gene (<it>RB1</it>) mutations. In germline retinoblastoma, mutations in the <it>RB1 </it>gene predispose individuals to increased cancer risks during development. These mutations segregate as autosomal dominant traits with high penetrance (90%).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We screened 30 family members from one family using high resolution melting assay and DNA direct sequencing for mutations in the <it>RB1 </it>gene. We evaluate the phenotype and penetrance of germline mutations of the <it>RB1 </it>gene in a large Taiwanese family.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The molecular analysis and clinical details of this family showed phenotypic variability associated with the p.V654L mutation in exon 19 of the <it>RB1 </it>gene in 11 family members. The phenotype varied from asymptomatic to presence of a unilateral tumor. Only four individuals (2 males and 2 females) developed unilateral retinoblastoma, which resulted in calculated low penetrance of 36% (4/11). The four individuals with retinoblastoma were diagnosed before the age of three years. None of their relatives exhibited variable severity or bilateral retinoblastoma.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The diseased-eye ratio for this family was 0.36, which is lower than current estimates. This suggests that the <it>RB1 </it>p.V654L mutation is a typical mutation associated with low penetrance.</p
Carrier Screening for Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) in 107,611 Pregnant Women during the Period 2005–2009: A Prospective Population-Based Cohort Study
BACKGROUND: Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is the most common neuromuscular autosomal recessive disorder. The American College of Medical Genetics has recently recommended routine carrier screening for SMA because of the high carrier frequency (1 in 25-50) as well as the severity of that genetic disease. Large studies are needed to determine the feasibility, benefits, and costs of such a program. METHODS AND FINDINGS: This is a prospective population-based cohort study of 107,611 pregnant women from 25 counties in Taiwan conducted during the period January 2005 to June 2009. A three-stage screening program was used: (1) pregnant women were tested for SMA heterozygosity; (2) if the mother was determined to be heterozygous for SMA (carrier status), the paternal partner was then tested; (3) if both partners were SMA carriers, prenatal diagnostic testing was performed. During the study period, a total of 2,262 SMA carriers with one copy of the SMN1 gene were identified among the 107,611 pregnant women that were screened. The carrier rate was approximately 1 in 48 (2.10%). The negative predictive value of DHPLC coupled with MLPA was 99.87%. The combined method could detect approximately 94% of carriers because most of the cases resulted from a common single deletion event. In addition, 2,038 spouses were determined to be SMA carriers. Among those individuals, 47 couples were determined to be at high risk for having offspring with SMA. Prenatal diagnostic testing was performed in 43 pregnant women (91.49%) and SMA was diagnosed in 12 (27.91%) fetuses. The prevalence of SMA in our population was 1 in 8,968. CONCLUSION: The main benefit of SMA carrier screening is to reduce the burden associated with giving birth to an affected child. Bio-anthropological Studies on Human Skeletons from the 6th Century Tomb of Ancient Silla Kingdom in South Korea
In November and December 2013, unidentified human skeletal remains buried in a mokgwakmyo
(a traditional wooden coffin) were unearthed while conducting an archaeological investigation near Gyeongju, which was the capital of the Silla Kingdom (57 BCE– 660 CE) of ancient Korea. The human skeletal remains were preserved in relatively intact condition.
In an attempt to obtain biological information on the skeleton, physical anthropological, mitochondrial
DNA, stable isotope and craniofacial analyses were carried out. The results indicated that the individual was a female from the Silla period, of 155 ± 5 cm height, who died in her late thirties. The maternal lineage belonged to the haplogroup F1b1a, typical for East Asia, and the diet had been more C3- (wheat, rice and potatoes) than C4-based (maize, millet and other tropical grains). Finally, the face of the individual was reconstructed utilizing the skull (restored from osseous fragments) and three-dimensional computerized modelling system. This study, applying multi-dimensional approaches within an overall bio-anthropological analysis, was the first attempt to collect holistic biological information on human skeletal remains dating to the Silla Kingdom period of ancient Korea
Precise measurement of the W-boson mass with the CDF II detector
We have measured the W-boson mass MW using data corresponding to 2.2/fb of
integrated luminosity collected in proton-antiproton collisions at 1.96 TeV
with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. Samples consisting
of 470126 W->enu candidates and 624708 W->munu candidates yield the measurement
MW = 80387 +- 12 (stat) +- 15 (syst) = 80387 +- 19 MeV. This is the most
precise measurement of the W-boson mass to date and significantly exceeds the
precision of all previous measurements combined
Search for New Physics with Jets and Missing Transverse Momentum in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
A search for new physics is presented based on an event signature of at least
three jets accompanied by large missing transverse momentum, using a data
sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36 inverse picobarns
collected in proton--proton collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV with the CMS detector
at the LHC. No excess of events is observed above the expected standard model
backgrounds, which are all estimated from the data. Exclusion limits are
presented for the constrained minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard
model. Cross section limits are also presented using simplified models with new
particles decaying to an undetected particle and one or two jets

standard model, and most recent determinations from other experiments and of
comparable accuracy. We also report the first observation of the {\mathcal{B}}(B^0_s \to
