    The use of a raindrop aggregate destruction device to evaluate sediment and soil organic carbon transport

    Raindrop impact and subsequent aggregate breakdown can potentially change the movement behaviour of soil fractions and thus alter their transport distances when compared against non-impacted aggregates. In a given water layer, the transport distances of eroded soil fractions, and thus that of the associated substances across landscapes, such as soil organic carbon (SOC) and phosphorous, are determined by the settling velocities of the eroded soil fractions. However, using mineral size distribution to represent the settling velocities of soil fractions, as often applied in current erosion models, would ignore the potential influence of aggregation on the settling behaviour of soil fractions. The destructive effects of raindrops impacting onto aggregates are also often neglected in current soil erosion models. Therefore, the objective of this study is to develop a proxy method to effectively simulate aggregate breakdown under raindrop impact, and further identify the settling velocity of eroded sediment and the associated SOC. Two agricultural soils with different sandy and silty loam textures were subjected to rainfall using a raindrop aggregate destruction device (RADD). The aggregates sustained after raindrop impact were fractionated by a settling tube into six different classes according to their respective settling velocities. The same mass amount of bulk soil of each soil type was also dispersed and sieved into the same six classes, to form a comparison in size distribution. The SOC content was measured for each settled and dispersed class. Our results show the following: (1) for an aggregated soil, applying dispersed mineral grain size distribution, rather than its actual aggregate distribution, to soil erosion models would lead to a biased estimation on the redistribution of eroded sediment and SOC; (2) the RADD designed in this study effectively captures the effects of raindrop impact on aggregate destruction and is thus able to simulate the quasi-natural sediment spatial redistribution; (3) further RADD tests with more soils under standard rainfall combined with local rainfalls are required to optimize the method

    Capturing the Scale Dependency of Erosion-Induced Variation in CO2 Emissions on Terraced Slopes

    Net soil CO2 emissions are not independent of topography but tend to decline with increasing slope gradients. Such decline has been attributed to increased runoff and greater soil loss on steep slopes, leaving the soil less habitable for microorganisms. However, the specific variations of slope gradients and thus the associated soil properties relevant for CO2 emissions, especially from terraced slopes, are often disguised by the coarse resolution of digital terrain models (DTMs) based on commonly available open-source data. Such misrepresentation of the relationship between topography and soil CO2 emissions carries the risk of a wrong assessment of soil-atmosphere interaction. By applying a slope dependent soil CO2 emission model developed from erosion plots to nearby sloping and partially terraced cropland using two DTMs of different spatial resolutions, this study tested the significance of these resolution-induced errors on CO2 emission estimates. The results show that the coarser-resolution Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) underestimated CO2-C emission by 27% compared to the higher-resolution DTM derived from Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) imagery. Such difference can be mostly attributed to a better representation of the proportion of flat slopes in the high-resolution DTM. Although the observations from erosion plots cannot be directly extrapolated to a larger scale, the 27% underestimation using the coarser-resolution SRTM DTM emphasizes that it is essential to represent microreliefs and their impact on runoff and erosion-induced soil heterogeneity at an appropriate scale. The widespread impact of topography on erosion and deposition on cropland, and the associated slope-dependent heterogeneity of soil properties, may lead to even greater differences than those observed in this study. The greatly improved estimation on CO2 emissions by the UAV-derived DTM also demonstrates that UAVs have a great potential to fill the gap between conventional field investigations and commonly applied coarse-resolution remote sensing when assessing the impact of soil erosion on global soil-atmosphere interaction

    Different Selectivity in Fungal Communities Between Manure and Mineral Fertilizers: A Study in an Alkaline Soil After 30 Years Fertilization

    Fertilizer application has contributed substantially to increasing crop yield. Despite the important role of soil fungi in agricultural production, we still have limited understanding of the complex responses of fungal taxonomic and functional groups to organic and mineral fertilization in long term. Here we report the responses of the fungal communities in an alkaline soil to 30-year application of mineral fertilizer (NP), organic manure (M) and combined fertilizer (NPM) by the Illumina HiSeq sequencing and quantitative real-time PCR to target fungal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) genes. The results show: (1) compared to the unfertilized soil, fertilizer application increased fungal diversity and ITS gene copy numbers, and shifted fungal community structure. Such changes were more pronounced in the M and NPM soils than in the NP soil (except for fungal diversity), which can be largely attributed to the manure induced greater increases in soil total organic C, total N and available P. (2) Compared to the unfertilized soil, the NP and NPM soils reduced the proportion of saprotrophs by 40%, the predominant taxa of which may potentially affect cellulose decomposition. (3) Indicator species analysis suggested that the indicator operational taxonomic units (OTUs) in the M soil occupied 25.6% of its total community, but that only accounted for 0.9% in the NP soil. Our findings suggest that fertilization-induced changes of total fungal community were more responsive to organic manure than mineral fertilizer. The reduced proportion of cellulose decomposition-related saprotrophs in mineral fertilizer treatments may potentially contribute to increasing their soil C stocks

    Analysis of the effect of anti-tuberculosis treatment and lung injury in patients with tuberculosis combined with underlying disease

    Objective·To investigate the impact of complications on the prognosis and lung injury of patients with tuberculosis..Methods·A retrospective cohort study was used for analysis, to select a total of 450 smear-positive tuberculosis (TB) patients, 323 males (71.8%) and 127 females (28.2%), from January to December 2018 at Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital, Tongji University School of Medicine, which were divided into non-complication group and complication group (diabetes, hypertension, liver diseases, kidney diseases and gallbladder diseases). Overall treatment outcomes and lung injuries in TB patients with and without complications were analyzed by using χ2 test. Stratified analysis of the impact of each comorbidity on the prognosis and lung injury of TB patients was performed. Kaplan-Meier analysis was used to analyze the temporal correlation between complications and tuberculosis prognosis.Results·Four hundred and fifty patients with a median age of 33 years were included, 173 of whom had complications: diabetes in 49 cases, hypertension in 23 cases, liver diseases in 83 cases, kidney diseases in 35 cases, and gallbladder diseases in 17 cases. The cure rate of TB patients without complications was 80.5%, which was significantly higher than that of the group with complications (P<0.05); the significantly lower cure rate of TB patients with diabetes, hypertension and kidney diseases at diagnosis was the key cause of anti-tuberculosis treatment failure; TB patients with diabetes and liver diseases had higher lung bacterial load and larger areas of lung damage, and TB patients with diabetes and kidney diseases had higher incidence of pulmonary cavity.Conclusion·Diabetes, hypertension and kidney diseases exacerbate lung damage and lead to lower TB cure rates. Early interventions by clinicians at the time of diagnosis can improve cure rates, shorten treatment time, and reduce medical costs for TB patients

    Juxtaposing BTE and ATE – on the role of the European insurance industry in funding civil litigation

    One of the ways in which legal services are financed, and indeed shaped, is through private insurance arrangement. Two contrasting types of legal expenses insurance contracts (LEI) seem to dominate in Europe: before the event (BTE) and after the event (ATE) legal expenses insurance. Notwithstanding institutional differences between different legal systems, BTE and ATE insurance arrangements may be instrumental if government policy is geared towards strengthening a market-oriented system of financing access to justice for individuals and business. At the same time, emphasizing the role of a private industry as a keeper of the gates to justice raises issues of accountability and transparency, not readily reconcilable with demands of competition. Moreover, multiple actors (clients, lawyers, courts, insurers) are involved, causing behavioural dynamics which are not easily predicted or influenced. Against this background, this paper looks into BTE and ATE arrangements by analysing the particularities of BTE and ATE arrangements currently available in some European jurisdictions and by painting a picture of their respective markets and legal contexts. This allows for some reflection on the performance of BTE and ATE providers as both financiers and keepers. Two issues emerge from the analysis that are worthy of some further reflection. Firstly, there is the problematic long-term sustainability of some ATE products. Secondly, the challenges faced by policymakers that would like to nudge consumers into voluntarily taking out BTE LEI

    Differential cross section measurements for the production of a W boson in association with jets in proton–proton collisions at √s = 7 TeV

    Measurements are reported of differential cross sections for the production of a W boson, which decays into a muon and a neutrino, in association with jets, as a function of several variables, including the transverse momenta (pT) and pseudorapidities of the four leading jets, the scalar sum of jet transverse momenta (HT), and the difference in azimuthal angle between the directions of each jet and the muon. The data sample of pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV was collected with the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 fb[superscript −1]. The measured cross sections are compared to predictions from Monte Carlo generators, MadGraph + pythia and sherpa, and to next-to-leading-order calculations from BlackHat + sherpa. The differential cross sections are found to be in agreement with the predictions, apart from the pT distributions of the leading jets at high pT values, the distributions of the HT at high-HT and low jet multiplicity, and the distribution of the difference in azimuthal angle between the leading jet and the muon at low values.United States.     Severe early onset preeclampsia: short and long term clinical, psychosocial and biochemical aspects

    Preeclampsia is a pregnancy specific disorder commonly defined as de novo hypertension and proteinuria after 20 weeks gestational age. It occurs in approximately 3-5% of pregnancies and it is still a major cause of both foetal and maternal morbidity and mortality worldwide1. As extensive research has not yet elucidated the aetiology of preeclampsia, there are no rational preventive or therapeutic interventions available. The only rational treatment is delivery, which benefits the mother but is not in the interest of the foetus, if remote from term. Early onset preeclampsia (<32 weeks’ gestational age) occurs in less than 1% of pregnancies. It is, however often associated with maternal morbidity as the risk of progression to severe maternal disease is inversely related with gestational age at onset2. Resulting prematurity is therefore the main cause of neonatal mortality and morbidity in patients with severe preeclampsia3. Although the discussion is ongoing, perinatal survival is suggested to be increased in patients with preterm preeclampsia by expectant, non-interventional management. This temporising treatment option to lengthen pregnancy includes the use of antihypertensive medication to control hypertension, magnesium sulphate to prevent eclampsia and corticosteroids to enhance foetal lung maturity4. With optimal maternal haemodynamic status and reassuring foetal condition this results on average in an extension of 2 weeks. Prolongation of these pregnancies is a great challenge for clinicians to balance between potential maternal risks on one the eve hand and possible foetal benefits on the other. Clinical controversies regarding prolongation of preterm preeclamptic pregnancies still exist – also taking into account that preeclampsia is the leading cause of maternal mortality in the Netherlands5 - a debate which is even more pronounced in very preterm pregnancies with questionable foetal viability6-9. Do maternal risks of prolongation of these very early pregnancies outweigh the chances of neonatal survival? Counselling of women with very early onset preeclampsia not only comprises of knowledge of the outcome of those particular pregnancies, but also knowledge of outcomes of future pregnancies of these women is of major clinical importance.
