Effect of Corporate Governance Index on Dividend Policy: An Investigation of Textile Industry of Pakistan

    Get PDF
This study empirically observes the impact of corporate governance index on dividend payout policy by using the data on thirty textile firms listed at Karachi Stock Exchange. The data cover the five-year period from 2009 to 2013. The data were gathered from financial statements of all the sample firms. Multiple regression models were used to check the impact of corporate governance on dividend policy. No effect of corporate governance index on firm dividend policy was found, and the largest shareholders also had no impact on dividend payout policy. A significant positive relationship was found between payout policy and stock value. Gross profit margin and operating profit margin had significant positive impact on the firm’s dividend payout policy. There is a significant correlation between the firm’s performance and payout policy

Finishing the euchromatic sequence of the human genome

The sequence of the human genome encodes the genetic instructions for human physiology, as well as rich information about human evolution. In 2001, the International Human Genome Sequencing Consortium reported a draft sequence of the euchromatic portion of the human genome. Since then, the international collaboration has worked to convert this draft into a genome sequence with high accuracy and nearly complete coverage. Here, we report the result of this finishing process. The current genome sequence (Build 35) contains 2.85 billion nucleotides interrupted by only 341 gaps. It covers ∼99% of the euchromatic genome and is accurate to an error rate of ∼1 event per 100,000 bases. Many of the remaining euchromatic gaps are associated with segmental duplications and will require focused work with new methods. The near-complete sequence, the first for a vertebrate, greatly improves the precision of biological analyses of the human genome including studies of gene number, birth and death. Notably, the human enome seems to encode only 20,000-25,000 protein-coding genes. The genome sequence reported here should serve as a firm foundation for biomedical research in the decades ahead

Psychometric Properties and Correlates of Precarious Manhood Beliefs in 62 Nations

Precarious manhood beliefs portray manhood, relative to womanhood, as a social status that is hard to earn, easy to lose, and proven via public action. Here, we present cross-cultural data on a brief measure of precarious manhood beliefs (the Precarious Manhood Beliefs scale [PMB]) that covaries meaningfully with other cross-culturally validated gender ideologies and with country-level indices of gender equality and human development. Using data from university samples in 62 countries across 13 world regions (N = 33,417), we demonstrate: (1) the psychometric isomorphism of the PMB (i.e., its comparability in meaning and statistical properties across the individual and country levels); (2) the PMB’s distinctness from, and associations with, ambivalent sexism and ambivalence toward men; and (3) associations of the PMB with nation-level gender equality and human development. Findings are discussed in terms of their statistical and theoretical implications for understanding widely-held beliefs about the precariousness of the male gender role

This study observed empirically the impact of corporate governance index on dividend payout policy by using the data of seventeen textile firms listed in Karachi Stock Exchange. The data covered the five years period from 2009 to 2013. The data were gathered from financial statements of all the sample firms. Multiple regression models were used to check the impact of corporate governance on dividend policy. No effect of corporate governance index on firm dividend policy was found, and the largest shareholders also had no impact on dividend pay-out policy. The association between payout policy and stock value was found to be significant positive. Gross profit margin and operating profit margin had significant positive impact on firm’s dividend payout policy. There is a significant correlation between firm performance and payout policy

Mediastinal paraganglioma of the aortopulmonary subtype - A surgical challenge

    No full text
Introduction and importance: This case report describes the successful surgical management of a 30-year-old male with a non-functional carotid body tumor and a mediastinal paraganglioma occupying the aortopulmonary space. The report highlights the rarity of mediastinal paragangliomas and the challenges in their surgical management. Case presentation: The patient underwent pre-op angioembolisation of the carotid body tumor, followed by excision and left cervical lymph node dissection. A large mediastinal mass was identified and resected during surgery without needing a cardiopulmonary bypass. The patient recovered well from surgery. Histopathology confirmed the diagnosis of clinically recurrent paraganglioma. Clinical discussion: Mediastinal paragangliomas are rare and challenging to manage due to their proximity to major vascular structures. Surgical intervention is the preferred treatment, but the risk of complications is high. In this case, the surgical approach involved resection of the mediastinal mass without cardiopulmonary bypass. This approach reduced the risk of complications associated with bypass procedures. The procedure\u27s success underscores the importance of early diagnosis and prompt surgical intervention. Conclusion: This case report highlights the successful surgical management of a rare and clinically challenging mediastinal paraganglioma without cardiopulmonary bypass. The report underscores the importance of prompt diagnosis and surgical intervention in mediastinal paraganglioma

Should 1 or 2 venous anastomoses be done in microsurgical flap transfer?

    No full text
Background: Venous compromise is still the most common cause of free flap failure. The need of a second venous anastomosis to prevent free flap failure is controversial. It is proposed that the use of dual venous anastomoses reduces venous compromise. However, some surgeons suggest that dual venous drainage reduces venous blood flow causing a potential risk of thrombosis. Objective: This study aimed to compare the frequency of reexploration secondary to venous thrombosis in free flap surgeries in reconstruction of soft tissue defects with 1-vein versus 2-vein anastomosis.Materials and methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study including 298 flaps. In 180 of these patients, 2-vein anastomosis was done, and in 118, 1-vein anastomosis was done. The study was conducted at Aga Khan University Hospital from January 2017 to December 2018.Results: The number of venous anastomosis was not associated with flap survival. The group with dual anastomosis required more frequent reexploration as compared with 1 venous anastomosis group (8% vs 1.7%).Outcome and salvage rate were better in the 2-vein group as compared with the 1-vein group (64% vs 50%).Conclusion: There is no difference in flap survival in single or dual venous anastomosis, but we have noticed higher reexploration rates in the 2-vein group. However, outcome is better in the 2-vein group

Background: Within palliative care it is expected that the patient can keep the quality of life for as long as possible. It is the nurses´responsibility to give good person-centered palliative care. Aim: To illuminate the factors that contribute to good palliative care in the nurses´perspective. Method: A literature review was conducted of 16 scientific articles with both a qualitative and quantitative approach. Results: Factors that affect the nurses´ perspective of good palliative care are relationships, communication, how to define the palliative phase, and teamwork. Conclusion: The foundation of good palliative care is a cooperation between nurse, patient, and their family. A well-functioning teamwork between different professions is important within the healthcare and that nurses support each other in their work and that time is needed for reflection
