Comparison of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae var. boulardii and top-fermenting brewing yeast strains during the fermentation of model nutrient media and beer wort
Received: June 27th, 2022 ; Accepted: September 18th, 2022 ; Published: October 17th, 2022 ; Correspondence: [email protected], the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae var. boulardii have attracted the
attention of Food Science researchers due to their unique properties, the main among which are
probiotics. Thus, research is conducted on the use of this yeast as a starter culture in the
technology of yogurt, fermented vegetables, fruit, vegetable juices, as well as beer. This paper is
aimed at studying Saccharomyces cerevisiae var. boulardii 's fermentation performance
compared to top-fermenting brewing yeast strains during fermentation of model nutrient media
and beer wort. Fermentation activity of the studied strains was assessed based on the character of
fermentation curves, as well as the values of the maximum substrate assimilation rate and
apparent degree of fermentation. Moreover, during the study, beer was produced using the yeast
Saccharomyces cerevisiae var. boulardii as a starter culture. According to the obtained results, it
can be concluded that Saccharomyces cerevisiae var. boulardii have less fermentation activity
compared to brewing strains. In turn, beer produced with Saccharomyces cerevisiae var.
boulardiisignificantly differed in physicochemical, microbiological, and organoleptic parameters
from the control sample obtained using the 047A brewing strain. Thus, it contained less ethanol
and secondary metabolites; however, the concentration of living cells was significantly higher,
which indicates a relatively high viability of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae var. boulardii.
From an organoleptic point of view, final beer has a positive sensory profile. The aroma of the
product had a complex character: it included caramel, spicy, fruity and phenolic notes, as well as
smoked and wine elements; while honey was the dominant note of the taste
Magnetic field influence on the proximity effect in semiconductor - superconductor hybrid structures and their thermal conductance
We show that a magnetic field can influnce the proximity effect in NS
junctions via diamagnetic screening current flowing in the superconductor.
Using ballistic quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) electron channels as an example, we
show that the supercurrent flow shifts the proximity-induced minigap in the
excitation spectrum of a Q1D system from the Fermi level to higher
quasiparticle energies. Thermal conductance of a Q1D channel (normalized by
that of a normal Q1D ballistic system) is predicted to manifest such a spectral
feature as a nonmonotonic behavior at temperatures corresponding to the energy
of excitation into the gapful part of the spectrum.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, revised version with a new titl
Theory of laser ion acceleration from a foil target of nanometers
A theory for laser ion acceleration is presented to evaluate the maximum ion
energy in the interaction of ultrahigh contrast (UHC) intense laser with a
nanometer-scale foil. In this regime the energy of ions may be directly related
to the laser intensity and subsequent electron dynamics. This leads to a simple
analytical expression for the ion energy gain under the laser irradiation of
thin targets. Significantly, higher energies for thin targets than for thicker
targets are predicted. Theory is concretized to the details of recent
experiments which may find its way to compare with these results.Comment: 22 pages 7 figures. will be submitted to NJ
On The Mobile Behavior of Solid He at High Temperatures
We report studies of solid helium contained inside a torsional oscillator, at
temperatures between 1.07K and 1.87K. We grew single crystals inside the
oscillator using commercially pure He and He-He mixtures containing
100 ppm He. Crystals were grown at constant temperature and pressure on the
melting curve. At the end of the growth, the crystals were disordered,
following which they partially decoupled from the oscillator. The fraction of
the decoupled He mass was temperature and velocity dependent. Around 1K, the
decoupled mass fraction for crystals grown from the mixture reached a limiting
value of around 35%. In the case of crystals grown using commercially pure
He at temperatures below 1.3K, this fraction was much smaller. This
difference could possibly be associated with the roughening transition at the
solid-liquid interface.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figure
Glide and Superclimb of Dislocations in Solid He
Glide and climb of quantum dislocations under finite external stress,
variation of chemical potential and bias (geometrical slanting) in Peierls
potential are studied by Monte Carlo simulations of the effective string model.
We treat on unified ground quantum effects at finite temperatures . Climb at
low is assisted by superflow along dislocation core -- {\it superclimb}.
Above some critical stress avalanche-type creation of kinks is found. It is
characterized by hysteretic behavior at low . At finite biases gliding
dislocation remains rough even at lowest -- the behavior opposite to
non-slanted dislocations. In contrast to glide, superclimb is characterized by
quantum smooth state at low temperatures even for finite bias. In some
intermediate -range giant values of the compressibility as well as
non-Luttinger type behavior of the core superfluid are observed.Comment: Updated version submitted to JLTP as QFS2010 proceedings; 11 pages, 6

Nonequilibrium Josephson effect in mesoscopic ballistic multiterminal SNS junctions
We present a detailed study of nonequilibrium Josephson currents and
conductance in ballistic multiterminal SNS-devices. Nonequilibrium is created
by means of quasiparticle injection from a normal reservoir connected to the
normal part of the junction. By applying a voltage at the normal reservoir the
Josephson current can be suppressed or the direction of the current can be
reversed. For a junction longer than the thermal length, , the
nonequilibrium current increases linearly with applied voltage, saturating at a
value equal to the equilibrium current of a short junction. The conductance
exhibits a finite bias anomaly around . For symmetric
injection, the conductance oscillates -periodically with the phase
difference between the superconductors, with position of the minimum
( or ) dependent on applied voltage and temperature. For
asymmetric injection, both the nonequilibrium Josephson current and the
conductance becomes -periodic in phase difference. Inclusion of barriers
at the NS-interfaces gives rise to a resonant behavior of the total Josephson
current with respect to junction length with a period . Both
three and four terminal junctions are studied.Comment: 21 pages, 19 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Study of solid 4He in two dimensions. The issue of zero-point defects and study of confined crystal
Defects are believed to play a fundamental role in the supersolid state of
4He. We report on studies by exact Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations at
zero temperature of the properties of solid 4He in presence of many vacancies,
up to 30 in two dimensions (2D). In all studied cases the crystalline order is
stable at least as long as the concentration of vacancies is below 2.5%. In the
2D system for a small number, n_v, of vacancies such defects can be identified
in the crystalline lattice and are strongly correlated with an attractive
interaction. On the contrary when n_v~10 vacancies in the relaxed system
disappear and in their place one finds dislocations and a revival of the
Bose-Einstein condensation. Thus, should zero-point motion defects be present
in solid 4He, such defects would be dislocations and not vacancies, at least in
2D. In order to avoid using periodic boundary conditions we have studied the
exact ground state of solid 4He confined in a circular region by an external
potential. We find that defects tend to be localized in an interfacial region
of width of about 15 A. Our computation allows to put as upper bound limit to
zero--point defects the concentration 0.003 in the 2D system close to melting
density.Comment: 17 pages, accepted for publication in J. Low Temp. Phys., Special

Metamorphosis and Taxonomy of Andreev Bound States
We analyze the spatial and energy dependence of the local density of states
in a SNS junction. We model our system as a one-dimensional tight-binding chain
which we solve exactly by numerical diagonalization. We calculate the
dependence of the Andreev bound states on position, phase difference, gate
voltage, and coupling with the superconducting leads. Our results confirm the
physics predicted by certain analytical approximations, but reveal a much
richer set of phenomena beyond the grasp of these approximations, such as the
metamorphosis of the discrete states of the normal link (the normal bound
states) into Andreev bound states as the leads become superconducting.Comment: 23 pages, 15 figure
Search for a W' boson decaying to a bottom quark and a top quark in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
Results are presented from a search for a W' boson using a dataset
corresponding to 5.0 inverse femtobarns of integrated luminosity collected
during 2011 by the CMS experiment at the LHC in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV.
The W' boson is modeled as a heavy W boson, but different scenarios for the
couplings to fermions are considered, involving both left-handed and
right-handed chiral projections of the fermions, as well as an arbitrary
mixture of the two. The search is performed in the decay channel W' to t b,
leading to a final state signature with a single lepton (e, mu), missing
transverse energy, and jets, at least one of which is tagged as a b-jet. A W'
boson that couples to fermions with the same coupling constant as the W, but to
the right-handed rather than left-handed chiral projections, is excluded for
masses below 1.85 TeV at the 95% confidence level. For the first time using LHC
data, constraints on the W' gauge coupling for a set of left- and right-handed
coupling combinations have been placed. These results represent a significant
improvement over previously published limits.Comment: Submitted to Physics Letters B. Replaced with version publishe
Search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying into two photons in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV
A search for a Higgs boson decaying into two photons is described. The
analysis is performed using a dataset recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC
from pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, which corresponds to an
integrated luminosity of 4.8 inverse femtobarns. Limits are set on the cross
section of the standard model Higgs boson decaying to two photons. The expected
exclusion limit at 95% confidence level is between 1.4 and 2.4 times the
standard model cross section in the mass range between 110 and 150 GeV. The
analysis of the data excludes, at 95% confidence level, the standard model
Higgs boson decaying into two photons in the mass range 128 to 132 GeV. The
largest excess of events above the expected standard model background is
observed for a Higgs boson mass hypothesis of 124 GeV with a local significance
of 3.1 sigma. The global significance of observing an excess with a local
significance greater than 3.1 sigma anywhere in the search range 110-150 GeV is
estimated to be 1.8 sigma. More data are required to ascertain the origin of
this excess.Comment: Submitted to Physics Letters
