A quantum gate array can be programmed to evaluate the expectation value of any operator
A programmable gate array is a circuit whose action is controlled by input
data. In this letter we describe a special--purpose quantum circuit that can be
programmed to evaluate the expectation value of any operator acting on a
space of states of dimensions. The circuit has a program register whose
state encodes the operator whose expectation value is to be
evaluated. The method requires knowledge of the expansion of in a basis of
the space of operators. We discuss some applications of this circuit and its
relation to known instances of quantum state tomography.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures include
Probabilistic instantaneous quantum computation
The principle of teleportation can be used to perform a quantum computation
even before its quantum input is defined. The basic idea is to perform the
quantum computation at some earlier time with qubits which are part of an
entangled state. At a later time a generalized Bell state measurement is
performed jointly on the then defined actual input qubits and the rest of the
entangled state. This projects the output state onto the correct one with a
certain exponentially small probability. The sufficient conditions are found
under which the scheme is of benefit.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur
Molecular-orbital theory for the stopping power of atoms in the low velocity regime:the case of helium in alkali metals
A free-parameter linear-combination-of-atomic-orbitals approach is presented
for analyzing the stopping power of slow ions moving in a metal. The method is
applied to the case of He moving in alkali metals. Mean stopping powers for He
present a good agreement with local-density-approximation calculations. Our
results show important variations in the stopping power of channeled atoms with
respect to their mean values.Comment: LATEX, 3 PostScript Figures attached. Total size 0.54
Entangled light in transition through the generation threshold
We investigate continuous variable entangling resources on the base of
two-mode squeezing for all operational regimes of a nondegenerate optical
parametric oscillator with allowance for quantum noise of arbitrary level. The
results for the quadrature variances of a pair of generated modes are obtained
by using the exact steady-state solution of Fokker-Planck equation for the
complex P-quasiprobability distribution function. We find a simple expression
for the squeezed variances in the near-threshold range and conclude that the
maximal two-mode squeezing reaches 50% relative to the level of vacuum
fluctuations and is achieved at the pump field intensity close to the
generation threshold. The distinction between the degree of two-mode squeezing
for monostable and bistable operational regimes is cleared up.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures; Content changed: more details added to the

DNA single-strand break repair and spinocerebellar ataxia with axonal neuropathy-1
DNA single-strand breaks (SSBs) are the commonest DNA lesions arising spontaneously in cells, and if not repaired may block transcription or may be converted into potentially lethal/clastogenic DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs). Recently, evidence has emerged that defects in the rapid repair of SSBs preferentially impact the nervous system. In particular, spinocerebellar ataxia with axonal neuropathy (SCAN1) is a human disease that is associated with mutation of TDP1 (tyrosyl DNA phosphodiesterase 1) protein and with a defect in repairing certain types of SSBs. Although SCAN1 is a rare neurodegenerative disorder, understanding the molecular basis of this disease will lead to better understanding of neurodegenerative processes. Here we review recent progress in our understanding of TDP1, single-strand break repair (SSBR), and neurodegenerative disease
Continuous variable entanglement and quantum state teleportation between optical and macroscopic vibrational modes through radiation pressure
We study an isolated, perfectly reflecting, mirror illuminated by an intense
laser pulse. We show that the resulting radiation pressure efficiently
entangles a mirror vibrational mode with the two reflected optical sideband
modes of the incident carrier beam. The entanglement of the resulting
three-mode state is studied in detail and it is shown to be robust against the
mirror mode temperature. We then show how this continuous variable entanglement
can be profitably used to teleport an unknown quantum state of an optical mode
onto the vibrational mode of the mirror.Comment: 18 pages, 10 figure
Efeito do tratamento com aminoetoxivinilglicina (AVG) na queda prÊ-colheita e na maturação dos frutos em macieiras
ABSTRACTApple trees cultivars Gala and Fuji were sprayed four weeks before commercial harvest with aminoethoxyvinilglycine (AVG), at doses of 0, 125, or 250 mg L-1, and assessed for preharvest fruit drop, fruit growth, and maturation on tree. In 'Gala', 64 days after AVG spraying, fruit drop for control treatment was 85%, and AVG (at 125 and 250 mg L-1) reduced it to 10%. In 'Fuji', 64 days after AVG spraying, fruit drop for control was 6%, while treatments with AVG (at 125 and 250 mg L-1) increased fruit drop to 10%. AVG was a powerful retardant of fruit maturation for 'Gala' but not for 'Fuji'. In 'Gala', the most affected attribute was the skin background color, followed, in decreasing order, by soluble solids content, the starch index, skin red color, the flesh firmness, and titratable acidity. In 'Gala', only flesh firmness retention was improved by increasing AVG dose from 125 mg L-1 to 250 mg L-1. The AVG at 250 mg L-1 inhibited "Gala" late fruit growth but not 'Fuji'.
Measurement of the B0-anti-B0-Oscillation Frequency with Inclusive Dilepton Events
The - oscillation frequency has been measured with a sample of
23 million \B\bar B pairs collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II
asymmetric B Factory at SLAC. In this sample, we select events in which both B
mesons decay semileptonically and use the charge of the leptons to identify the
flavor of each B meson. A simultaneous fit to the decay time difference
distributions for opposite- and same-sign dilepton events gives ps.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure, submitted to Physical Review Letter
Multimode mean-field model for the quantum phase transition of a Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical resonator
We develop a mean-field model describing the Hamiltonian interaction of
ultracold atoms and the optical field in a cavity. The Bose-Einstein condensate
is properly defined by means of a grand-canonical approach. The model is
efficient because only the relevant excitation modes are taken into account.
However, the model goes beyond the two-mode subspace necessary to describe the
self-organization quantum phase transition observed recently. We calculate all
the second-order correlations of the coupled atom field and radiation field
hybrid bosonic system, including the entanglement between the two types of
fields.Comment: 10 page
Search for a W' boson decaying to a bottom quark and a top quark in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
Results are presented from a search for a W' boson using a dataset
corresponding to 5.0 inverse femtobarns of integrated luminosity collected
during 2011 by the CMS experiment at the LHC in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV.
The W' boson is modeled as a heavy W boson, but different scenarios for the
couplings to fermions are considered, involving both left-handed and
right-handed chiral projections of the fermions, as well as an arbitrary
mixture of the two. The search is performed in the decay channel W' to t b,
leading to a final state signature with a single lepton (e, mu), missing
transverse energy, and jets, at least one of which is tagged as a b-jet. A W'
boson that couples to fermions with the same coupling constant as the W, but to
the right-handed rather than left-handed chiral projections, is excluded for
masses below 1.85 TeV at the 95% confidence level. For the first time using LHC
data, constraints on the W' gauge coupling for a set of left- and right-handed
coupling combinations have been placed. These results represent a significant
improvement over previously published limits.Comment: Submitted to Physics Letters B. Replaced with version publishe
