Predictions for Higgs production at the Tevatron and the associated uncertainties
We update the theoretical predictions for the production cross sections of
the Standard Model Higgs boson at the Fermilab Tevatron collider, focusing on
the two main search channels, the gluon-gluon fusion mechanism and
the Higgs-strahlung processes with , including all
relevant higher order QCD and electroweak corrections in perturbation theory.
We then estimate the various uncertainties affecting these predictions: the
scale uncertainties which are viewed as a measure of the unknown higher order
effects, the uncertainties from the parton distribution functions and the
related errors on the strong coupling constant, as well as the uncertainties
due to the use of an effective theory approach in the determination of the
radiative corrections in the process at next-to-next-to-leading
order. We find that while the cross sections are well under control in the
Higgs--strahlung processes, the theoretical uncertainties are rather large in
the case of the gluon-gluon fusion channel, possibly shifting the central
values of the next-to-next-to-leading order cross sections by more than
. These uncertainties are thus significantly larger than the
error assumed by the CDF and D0 experiments in their recent
analysis that has excluded the Higgs mass range 162-166 GeV at the 95%
confidence level. These exclusion limits should be, therefore, reconsidered in

NLO Higgs boson production plus one and two jets using the POWHEG BOX, MadGraph4 and MCFM
We present a next-to-leading order calculation of Higgs boson production plus
one and two jets via gluon fusion interfaced to shower Monte Carlo programs,
implemented according to the POWHEG method. For this implementation we have
used a new interface of the POWHEG BOX with MadGraph4, that generates the codes
for generic Born and real processes automatically. The virtual corrections have
been taken from the MCFM code. We carry out a simple phenomenological study of
our generators, comparing them among each other and with fixed next-to-leading

Factorization and NNLL Resummation for Higgs Production with a Jet Veto
Using methods of effective field theory, we derive the first all-order
factorization theorem for the Higgs-boson production cross section with a jet
veto, imposed by means of a standard sequential recombination jet algorithm.
Like in the case of small-q_T resummation in Drell-Yan and Higgs production,
the factorization is affected by a collinear anomaly. Our analysis provides the
basis for a systematic resummation of large logarithms log(m_H/p_T^veto) beyond
leading-logarithmic order. Specifically, we present predictions for the
resummed jet-veto cross section and efficiency at next-to-next-to-leading
logarithmic order. Our results have important implications for Higgs-boson
searches at the LHC, where a jet veto is required to suppress background

Composite Higgs Search at the LHC
The Higgs boson production cross-sections and decay rates depend, within the
Standard Model (SM), on a single unknown parameter, the Higgs mass. In
composite Higgs models where the Higgs boson emerges as a pseudo-Goldstone
boson from a strongly-interacting sector, additional parameters control the
Higgs properties which then deviate from the SM ones. These deviations modify
the LEP and Tevatron exclusion bounds and significantly affect the searches for
the Higgs boson at the LHC. In some cases, all the Higgs couplings are reduced,
which results in deterioration of the Higgs searches but the deviations of the
Higgs couplings can also allow for an enhancement of the gluon-fusion
production channel, leading to higher statistical significances. The search in
the H to gamma gamma channel can also be substantially improved due to an
enhancement of the branching fraction for the decay of the Higgs boson into a

Variation of cataract surgery costs in four different graded providers of China
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>China has the largest population of cataract patients in the world. However, the cataract surgery rate per million remains low in China. We carried out a survey on costs of cataract surgery from four different graded providers in China and analyzed differences in cost among these clinics.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>1,189 patients were recruited for the study in four eye clinics, located in two provinces, Guangdong province in southern China and Hubei province in central China. The average cost of each cataract surgery episode was calculated including cost of intraocular lens, cost of drugs and facility cost. We also collected information on reimbursement and disposable annual income of local residents.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Mean total cost per cataract intervention of four different providers varied considerably, ranging from US 536 in Jingshan County Hospital. In all providers, except for Jingshan County Hospital, the cost exceeded annual disposable income of local rural residents. As to the proportion of patients with reimbursement, the figure for Union Hospital was only 36%, while for other three clinics it was more than 60%. There was a significant difference between mean reimbursement ratios, with the highest ratio in Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center being 71%.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Significant differences in costs of cataract surgery were found among the 4 different graded providers. A part of the cost was borne by patients. Proportion of patients with reimbursement and mean reimbursement ratios were higher in economically developed regions than in economically developing regions. Much more financial support should be directed into the rural New Cooperative Medical Scheme to raise the reimbursement ratio in rural China.</p
Ferroelectric polarization switching with a remarkably high activation energy in orthorhombic GaFeO3 thin films

AG and RG thank the Department of Science and Technology for the financial support (Grant No. SB/S3/ME/29/2013).Orthorhombic GaFeO3 (o-GFO) with the polar Pna21 space group is a prominent ferrite owing to its piezoelectricity and ferrimagnetism, coupled with magnetoelectric effects. Herein, we demonstrate large ferroelectric remanent polarization in undoped o-GFO thin films by adopting either a hexagonal strontium titanate (STO) or a cubic yttrium-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) substrate. The polarization-electric-field hysteresis curves of the polar c-axis-grown o-GFO film on a SrRuO3/STO substrate show the net switching polarization of ~35âÎźCâcmâ2 with an unusually high coercive field (Ec) of Âą1400âkVâcmâ1 at room temperature. The positive-up and negative-down measurement also demonstrates the switching polarization of ~26âÎźCâcmâ2. The activation energy for the polarization switching, as obtained by density-functional theory calculations, is remarkably high, 1.05âeV per formula unit. We have theoretically shown that this high value accounts for the extraordinary high Ec and the stability of the polar Pna21 phase over a wide range of temperatures up to 1368âK.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
Combined parameter and model reduction of cardiovascular problems by means of active subspaces and POD-Galerkin methods
In this chapter we introduce a combined parameter and model reduction methodology and present its application to the efficient numerical estimation of a pressure drop in a set of deformed carotids. The aim is to simulate a wide range of possible occlusions after the bifurcation of the carotid. A parametric description of the admissible deformations, based on radial basis functions interpolation, is introduced. Since the parameter space may be very large, the first step in the combined reduction technique is to look for active subspaces in order to reduce the parameter space dimension. Then, we rely on model order reduction methods over the lower dimensional parameter subspace, based on a POD-Galerkin approach, to further reduce the required computational effort and enhance computational efficiency
Correlates of ObsessiveâCompulsive Disorder in a Sample of HIV-Positive, Methamphetamine-using Men Who have Sex with Men
Substance use has been identified as a risk factor for elevated levels of obsessiveâcompulsive disorder (OCD). This study examined methamphetamine use and sexual risk behaviors as correlates of OCD in a sample of 245 HIV-positive men having sex with men (MSM) in San Diego, CA. In a logistic regression analysis, OCD was associated with greater frequency of methamphetamine use, more depressive symptoms, seeking out risky venues and risky sexual partners when âhighâ on methamphetamine, and reporting fewer sex acts in the past 2Â months. These data suggest the need for increased awareness and understanding of the role that OCD may play in the drug use behaviors and risky sexual practices of methamphetamine users
Measurements of fiducial and differential cross sections for Higgs boson production in the diphoton decay channel at sâ=8 TeV with ATLAS
Measurements of fiducial and differential cross sections are presented for Higgs boson production in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of sâ=8 TeV. The analysis is performed in the H â γγ decay channel using 20.3 fbâ1 of data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The signal is extracted using a fit to the diphoton invariant mass spectrum assuming that the width of the resonance is much smaller than the experimental resolution. The signal yields are corrected for the effects of detector inefficiency and resolution. The pp â H â γγ fiducial cross section is measured to be 43.2 Âą9.4(stat.) ââ2.9 +â3.2 (syst.) Âą1.2(lumi)fb for a Higgs boson of mass 125.4GeV decaying to two isolated photons that have transverse momentum greater than 35% and 25% of the diphoton invariant mass and each with absolute pseudorapidity less than 2.37. Four additional fiducial cross sections and two cross-section limits are presented in phase space regions that test the theoretical modelling of different Higgs boson production mechanisms, or are sensitive to physics beyond the Standard Model. Differential cross sections are also presented, as a function of variables related to the diphoton kinematics and the jet activity produced in the Higgs boson events. The observed spectra are statistically limited but broadly in line with the theoretical expectations
Search for the standard model Higgs boson in the H to ZZ to 2l 2nu channel in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
A search for the standard model Higgs boson in the H to ZZ to 2l 2nu decay
channel, where l = e or mu, in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7
TeV is presented. The data were collected at the LHC, with the CMS detector,
and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 inverse femtobarns. No
significant excess is observed above the background expectation, and upper
limits are set on the Higgs boson production cross section. The presence of the
standard model Higgs boson with a mass in the 270-440 GeV range is excluded at
