Dielectric and conductivity relaxation in mixtures of glycerol with LiCl
We report a thorough dielectric characterization of the alpha relaxation of
glass forming glycerol with varying additions of LiCl. Nine salt concentrations
from 0.1 - 20 mol% are investigated in a frequency range of 20 Hz - 3 GHz and
analyzed in the dielectric loss and modulus representation. Information on the
dc conductivity, the dielectric relaxation time (from the loss) and the
conductivity relaxation time (from the modulus) is provided. Overall, with
increasing ion concentration, a transition from reorientationally to
translationally dominated behavior is observed and the translational ion
dynamics and the dipolar reorientational dynamics become successively coupled.
This gives rise to the prospect that by adding ions to dipolar glass formers,
dielectric spectroscopy may directly couple to the translational degrees of
freedom determining the glass transition, even in frequency regimes where
usually strong decoupling is observed.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figure
Cyanobacterial diversity in microbial mats from the hypersaline lagoon system of Araruama, Brazil: An in-depth polyphasic study
Microbial mats are complex, micro-scale ecosystems that can be found in a wide range of environments. In the top layer of photosynthetic mats from hypersaline environments, a large diversity of cyanobacteria typically predominates. With the aim of strengthening the knowledge on the cyanobacterial diversity present in the coastal lagoon system of Araruama (state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), we have characterized three mat samples by means of a polyphasic approach. We have used morphological and molecular data obtained by culture-dependent and -independent methods. Moreover, we have compared different classification methodologies and discussed the outcomes, challenges, and pitfalls of these methods. Overall, we show that Araruama's lagoons harbor a high cyanobacterial diversity. Thirty-six unique morphospecies could be differentiated, which increases by more than 15% the number of morphospecies and genera already reported for the entire Araruama system. Morphology-based data were compared with the 16S rRNA gene phylogeny derived from isolate sequences and environmental sequences obtained by PCR-DGGE and pyrosequencing. Most of the 48 phylotypes could be associated with the observed morphospecies at the order level. More than one third of the sequences demonstrated to be closely affiliated (best BLAST hit results of ≥99%) with cyanobacteria from ecologically similar habitats. Some sequences had no close relatives in the public databases, including one from an isolate, being placed as "loner" sequences within different orders. This hints at hidden cyanobacterial diversity in the mats of the Araruama system, while reinforcing the relevance of using complementary approaches to study cyanobacterial diversity. © 2017 Ramos, Castelo-Branco, Leão, Martins, Carvalhal-Gomes, Sobrinho da Silva, Mendonça Filho and Vasconcelos.This work was supported by the Biogeochemical Project

Valor preditivo do "Clinical Risk Index for Babies" para o risco de mortalidade neonatal
OBJECTIVE: Several indicators, mainly birthweight and gestational age, have been used to predict the mortality risk in neonatal intensive care units. In order to assess the potential value of CRIB in predicting neonatal mortality, the score was used over the first 12 hours of life of the newborns admitted to this unit, during the year of 1996. METHOD: The inclusion criteria consisted of all infants without inevitably lethal congenital malformations, birthweight below 1,500g and/or gestational age less than 31 weeks. Newborn children who died within 12 hours after delivery were excluded. The CRIB score covers birth weight, gestational age, the presence of congenital malformations (not inevitably lethal ) and three indexes of physiological status during first 12 hours after birth - maximum and minimum appropriate fraction of inspired oxygen and maximum (most acidotic) base excess. RESULTS: In a prospective cohort, seventy one newborn children were studied. The birthweight (average) was 1,119 ± 275.6 g, gestational age 30 weeks 4/7 ±2 weeks 3/7; male (57%); Apgar 1° min. scoreOBJETIVO: Comparar o valor preditivo do CRIB (Clinical Risk Index for Babies) para o risco de mortalidade neonatal ao peso de nascimento (PN) e idade gestacional (IG). MÉTODO: Numa coorte prospectiva foram estudados, durante o ano de 1996, 71 recém-nascidos admitidos na unidade de terapia intensiva, com PN ; 10 foi de 100%. CONCLUSÕES: O escore de CRIB >; 10 correspondeu a maiores especificidade e valor preditivo positivo em relação aos demais parâmetros. A área determinada pela "receiver operating characteristic" relativa ao CRIB também foi superior. O CRIB mostrou-se um marcador mais acurado na previsão de risco de mortalidade quando comparado ao PN ou IG isoladamente
Charm and hidden charm scalar mesons in the nuclear medium
We study the renormalization of the properties of low lying charm and hidden
charm scalar mesons in a nuclear medium, concretely of the D_{s0}(2317) and the
theoretical hidden charm state X(3700). We find that for the D_{s0}(2317), with
negligible width at zero density, the width becomes about 100 MeV at normal
nuclear matter density, while in the case of the X(3700) the width becomes as
large as 200 MeV. We discuss the origin of this new width and trace it to
reactions occurring in the nucleus, while offering a guideline for future
experiments testing these changes. We also show how those medium modifications
will bring valuable information on the nature of the scalar resonances and the
mechanisms of the interaction of D mesons with nucleons and nuclei
Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in √s = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector
A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results
