Canola seed as affected by swathing time
Non-Peer ReviewedYield, weight, protein content (oil-free meal) and oil content of canola seed increased as seeds developed. Maximum values were obtained between 45-49 days after flowering, when seed moisture was 29-38%. Fatty acid composition of canola seed oil changed during seed development. The proportion of oleic (C18:1) and linolenic (C18:3) acids increased, while that of most other fatty acids decreased, as seeds developed, while Eicosenoic (C20:1) and erucic (C22:1) acids did not show a clear trend. Fatty-acids tended to stabilize by the 49th day after flowering. Early seeding resulted in higher seed yield, larger seeds, lower seed protein content and higher seed oil content, when compared to late seeding

A multilevel neo-institutional analysis of infection prevention and control in English hospitals: coerced safety culture change?
Despite committed policy, regulative and professional efforts on healthcare safety, little is known about how such macro-interventions permeate organisations and shape culture over time. Informed by neo-institutional theory, we examined how inter-organisational influences shaped safety practices and inter-subjective meanings following efforts for coerced culture change. We traced macro-influences from 2000 to 2015 in infection prevention and control (IPC). Safety perceptions and meanings were inductively analysed from 130 in-depth qualitative interviews with senior- and middle-level managers from 30 English hospitals. A total of 869 institutional interventions were identified; 69% had a regulative component. In this context of forced implementation of safety practices, staff experienced inherent tensions concerning the scope of safety, their ability to be open and prioritisation of external mandates over local need. These tensions stemmed from conflicts among three co-existing institutional logics prevalent in the NHS. In response to requests for change, staff flexibly drew from a repertoire of cognitive, material and symbolic resources within and outside their organisations. They crafted 'strategies of action', guided by a situated assessment of first-hand practice experiences complementing collective evaluations of interventions such as 'pragmatic', 'sensible' and also 'legitimate'. Macro-institutional forces exerted influence either directly on individuals or indirectly by enriching the organisational cultural repertoire
Measurement of the Charged Multiplicities in b, c and Light Quark Events from Z0 Decays
Average charged multiplicities have been measured separately in , and
light quark () events from decays measured in the SLD experiment.
Impact parameters of charged tracks were used to select enriched samples of
and light quark events, and reconstructed charmed mesons were used to select
quark events. We measured the charged multiplicities:
,
, from
which we derived the differences between the total average charged
multiplicities of or quark events and light quark events: and . We compared
these measurements with those at lower center-of-mass energies and with
perturbative QCD predictions. These combined results are in agreement with the
QCD expectations and disfavor the hypothesis of flavor-independent
fragmentation.Comment: 19 pages LaTex, 4 EPS figures, to appear in Physics Letters
Multiwavelength studies of MHD waves in the solar chromosphere: An overview of recent results
The chromosphere is a thin layer of the solar atmosphere that bridges the
relatively cool photosphere and the intensely heated transition region and
corona. Compressible and incompressible waves propagating through the
chromosphere can supply significant amounts of energy to the interface region
and corona. In recent years an abundance of high-resolution observations from
state-of-the-art facilities have provided new and exciting ways of
disentangling the characteristics of oscillatory phenomena propagating through
the dynamic chromosphere. Coupled with rapid advancements in
magnetohydrodynamic wave theory, we are now in an ideal position to thoroughly
investigate the role waves play in supplying energy to sustain chromospheric
and coronal heating. Here, we review the recent progress made in
characterising, categorising and interpreting oscillations manifesting in the
solar chromosphere, with an impetus placed on their intrinsic energetics.Comment: 48 pages, 25 figures, accepted into Space Science Review

Linear Collider Physics Resource Book for Snowmass 2001, 3: Studies of Exotic and Standard Model Physics
This Resource Book reviews the physics opportunities of a next-generation e+e- linear collider and discusses options for the experimental program. Part 3 reviews the possible experiments on that can be done at a linear collider on strongly coupled electroweak symmetry breaking, exotic particles, and extra dimensions, and on the top quark, QCD, and two-photon physics. It also discusses the improved precision electroweak measurements that this collider will make available. This Resource Book reviews the physics opportunities of a next-generation e+e- linear collider and discusses options for the experimental program. Production of pi+, pi-, K+, K-, p and p-bar in Light (uds), c and b Jets from Z0 Decays
We present improved measurements of the differential production rates of
stable charged particles in hadronic Z0 decays, and of charged pions, kaons and
protons identified over a wide momentum range using the SLD Cherenkov Ring
Imaging Detector. In addition to flavor-inclusive Z0 decays, measurements are
made for Z0 decays into light (u, d, s), c and b primary flavors, selected
using the upgraded Vertex Detector. Large differences between the flavors are
observed that are qualitatively consistent with expectations based upon
previously measured production and decay properties of heavy hadrons. These
results are used to test the predictions of QCD in the Modified Leading
Logarithm Approximation, with the ansatz of Local Parton-Hadron Duality, and
the predictions of three models of the hadronization process. The light-flavor
results provide improved tests of these predictions, as they do not include the
contribution of heavy-hadron production and decay; the heavy-flavor results
provide complementary model tests. In addition we have compared hadron and
antihadron production in light quark (as opposed to antiquark) jets.
Differences are observed at high momentum for all three charged hadron species,
providing direct probes of leading particle effects, and stringent constraints
on models.Comment: 44 pages, 14 figs; submitted to Phys. Rev.
Smaller limbic structures are associated with greater immunosuppression in over 1000 HIV-infected adults across five continents: Findings from the ENIGMA-HIV Working Group
Background: Human immunodeficiency virus type-1 (HIV) infection can be controlled with combination antiretroviral therapy (cART), but neurocognitive impairment remains common even in chronic and treated HIV-infected (HIV+) cohorts. Identifying the neuroanatomical pathways associated with infection has the potential to delineate novel neuropathological processes underlying persisting deficits, yet individual neuroimaging studies have yielded inconsistent findings. The ENIGMA-HIV Working Group was established to harmonize data from diverse studies to identify the common effects of HIV-infection on brain structure. Methods: Data were pooled from 12 independent neuroHIV studies from Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, and North America. Volume estimates for eight subcortical brain regions were extracted from T1-weighted MRI from 1,044 HIV+ adults (aged 22-81 years; 72.4% on cART; 70.3% male; 41.6% with detectable viral load (dVL)), to identify associations with plasma markers reflecting current immunosuppression (CD4+ T-cell count) or dVL. Follow-up analyses stratified data by cART status and sex. Bonferroni correction was used to determine statistical significance. Findings: LowercurrentCD4+ count was associated with smaller hippocampal (β= 20.3 mm3 per 100 cells/mm3; p = 0.0001) and thalamic volumes (β= 29.3; p = 0.003); in the subset of participants not on cART, it was associated with smaller putamen volumes (β= 65.1; p = 0.0009). On average, a dVL was associated with smaller hippocampal (Cohen’s d = 0.24; p = 0.0003) and amygdala volumes (d = 0.18; p = 0.0058).Interpretation: In HIV+ individuals across five continents, smaller limbic volumes were consistently associated with current plasma markers. As we assessed cohorts with different inclusion/exclusion criteria and demographic distributions, these deficits may represent a generalizable brain-signature of HIV infection in the cART era. Our findings support the importance of achieving viral suppression and immune restoration for maintaining brain health. Funding: This work was supported, in part, by NIH grant U54 EB020403
