Swimming with Predators and Pesticides: How Environmental Stressors Affect the Thermal Physiology of Tadpoles
To forecast biological responses to changing environments, we need to understand how a species’s physiology varies through space and time and assess how changes in physiological function due to environmental changes may interact with phenotypic changes caused by other types of environmental variation. Amphibian larvae are well known for expressing environmentally induced phenotypes, but relatively little is known about how these responses might interact with changing temperatures and their thermal physiology. To address this question, we studied the thermal physiology of grey treefrog tadpoles (Hyla versicolor) by determining whether exposures to predator cues and an herbicide (Roundup) can alter their critical maximum temperature (CTmax) and their swimming speed across a range of temperatures, which provides estimates of optimal temperature (Topt) for swimming speed and the shape of the thermal performance curve (TPC). We discovered that predator cues induced a 0.4uC higher CTmax value, whereas the herbicide had no effect. Tadpoles exposed to predator cues or the herbicide swam faster than control tadpoles and the increase in burst speed was higher near Topt. In regard to the shape of the TPC, exposure to predator cues increased Topt by 1.5uC, while exposure to the herbicide marginally lowered Topt by 0.4uC. Combining predator cues and the herbicide produced an intermediate Topt that was 0.5uC higher than the control. To our knowledge this is the first study to demonstrate a predator altering the thermal physiology of amphibian larvae (prey) by increasing CTmax, increasing the optimum temperature, and producing changes in the thermal performance curves. Furthermore, these plastic responses of CTmax and TPC to different inducing environments should be considered when forecasting biological responses to global warming.Peer reviewe

Resolving the compact HII regions in N160A with HST
Using high-resolution imaging with the Hubble Space Telescope, we study the
Large Magellanic Cloud HII region N160A and uncover several striking features
of this complex massive star-forming site. The two compact high excitation HII
blobs (HEBs) A1 and A2 are for the first time resolved and their stellar
content and morphology is revealed. A1, being of higher excitation, is powered
by a single massive star whose strong wind has created a surrounding bubble. A2
harbors several exciting stars enshrouded inside large quantities of dust. The
whole N160A nebula is energized by three star clusters for which we obtain
photometry and study their color-magnitude diagram. The HII region is
particularly dusty, with extinction values reaching an A_v~2.5 mag in the
visible, and it is separated from the molecular cloud by an outstanding
ionization front. A previously detected infrared young stellar object is also

STIS spectroscopy of newborn massive stars in SMC N81
Using Hubble Space Telescope observations with STIS, we study the main
exciting stars of N81, a high excitation compact Hii region in the Small
Magellanic Cloud (SMC). These far UV observations are the first spectroscopic
measurements of stars in such a region and reveal features characteristic of an
O6-O8 stellar type. The astonishing weakness of their wind profiles and their
sub-luminosity (up to ~ 2 mag fainter in Mv than the corresponding dwarfs) make
these stars a unique stellar population in the Magellanic Clouds. Our analysis
suggests that they are probably in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram locus of a
particularly young class of massive stars, the so-called Vz luminosity class,
as they are arriving on the zero age main sequence.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure
Mismatched anti-predator behavioral responses in predator-naïve larval anurans
Organisms are adept at altering behaviors to balance the tradeoff between foraging and predation risk in spatially and temporally shifting predator environments. In order to optimize this tradeoff, prey need to be able to display an appropriate response based on degree of predation risk. To be most beneficial in the earliest life stages in which many prey are vulnerable to predation, innate anti-predator responses should scale to match the risk imposed by predators until learned anti-predator responses can occur. We conducted an experiment that examined whether tadpoles with no previous exposure to predators (i.e., predator-naive) exhibit innate antipredator behavioral responses (e.g., via refuge use and spatial avoidance) that match the actual risk posed by each predator. Using 7 treatments (6 free-roaming, lethal predators plus no-predator control), we determined the predation rates of each predator on Lithobates sphenocephalus tadpoles. We recorded behavioral observations on an additional 7 nonlethal treatments (6 caged predators plus no-predator control). Tadpoles exhibited innate responses to fish predators, but not non-fish predators, even though two non-fish predators (newt and crayfish) consumed the most tadpoles. Due to a mismatch between innate response and predator consumption, tadpoles may be vulnerable to greater rates of predation at the earliest life stages before learning can occur. Thus, naïve tadpoles in nature may be at a high risk to predation in the presence of a novel predator until learned anti-predator responses provide additional defenses to the surviving tadpoles.ECU Open Access Publishing Support Fun
Precision Measurement of the Weak Mixing Angle in Moller Scattering
We report on a precision measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry in
fixed target electron-electron (Moller) scattering: A_PV = -131 +/- 14 (stat.)
+/- 10 (syst.) parts per billion, leading to the determination of the weak
mixing angle \sin^2\theta_W^eff = 0.2397 +/- 0.0010 (stat.) +/- 0.0008 (syst.),
evaluated at Q^2 = 0.026 GeV^2. Combining this result with the measurements of
\sin^2\theta_W^eff at the Z^0 pole, the running of the weak mixing angle is
observed with over 6 sigma significance. The measurement sets constraints on

Predator- and competitor-induced plasticity: how changes in foraging morphology affect phenotypic trade-offs
New Measurement of Parity Violation in Elastic Electron-Proton Scattering and Implications for Strange Form Factors
We have measured the parity-violating electroweak asymmetry in the elastic
scattering of polarized electrons from the proton. The result is A = -15.05 +-
0.98(stat) +- 0.56(syst) ppm at the kinematic point theta_lab = 12.3 degrees
and Q^2 = 0.477 (GeV/c)^2. The measurement implies that the value for the
strange form factor (G_E^s + 0.392 G_M^s) = 0.025 +- 0.020 +- 0.014, where the
first error is experimental and the second arises from the uncertainties in
electromagnetic form factors. This measurement is the first fixed-target parity
violation experiment that used either a `strained' GaAs photocathode to produce
highly polarized electrons or a Compton polarimeter to continuously monitor the

Facilitating return to work through early specialist health-based interventions (FRESH): protocol for a feasibility randomised controlled trial
Background
Over one million people sustain traumatic brain injury each year in the UK and more than 10 % of these are moderate or severe injuries, resulting in cognitive and psychological problems that affect the ability to work. Returning to work is a primary rehabilitation goal but fewer than half of traumatic brain injury survivors achieve this. Work is a recognised health service outcome, yet UK service provision varies widely and there is little robust evidence to inform rehabilitation practice. A single-centre cohort comparison suggested better work outcomes may be achieved through early occupational therapy targeted at job retention. This study aims to determine whether this intervention can be delivered in three new trauma centres and to conduct a feasibility, randomised controlled trial to determine whether its effects and cost effectiveness can be measured to inform a definitive trial.
Methods/design
Mixed methods study, including feasibility randomised controlled trial, embedded qualitative studies and feasibility economic evaluation will recruit 102 people with traumatic brain injury and their nominated carers from three English UK National Health Service (NHS) trauma centres. Participants will be randomised to receive either usual NHS rehabilitation or usual rehabilitation plus early specialist traumatic brain injury vocational rehabilitation delivered by an occupational therapist. The primary objective is to assess the feasibility of conducting a definitive trial; secondary objectives include measurement of protocol integrity (inclusion/exclusion criteria, intervention adherence, reasons for non-adherence) recruitment rate, the proportion of eligible patients recruited, reasons for non-recruitment, spectrum of TBI severity, proportion of and reasons for loss to follow-up, completeness of data collection, gains in face-to-face Vs postal data collection and the most appropriate methods of measuring primary outcomes (return to work, retention) to determine the sample size for a larger trial.
Discussion
To our knowledge, this is the first feasibility randomised controlled trial of a vocational rehabilitation health intervention specific to traumatic brain injury. The results will inform the design of a definitive trial
Enhanced strange baryon production in Au+Au collisions compared to p+p at sqrts = 200 GeV
We report on the observed differences in production rates of strange and
multi-strange baryons in Au+Au collisions at sqrts = 200 GeV compared to pp
interactions at the same energy. The strange baryon yields in Au+Au collisions,
then scaled down by the number of participating nucleons, are enhanced relative
to those measured in pp reactions. The enhancement observed increases with the
strangeness content of the baryon, and increases for all strange baryons with
collision centrality. The enhancement is qualitatively similar to that observed
at lower collision energy sqrts =17.3 GeV. The previous observations are for
the bulk production, while at intermediate pT, 1 < pT< 4 GeV/c, the strange
