    XRound : A reversible template language and its application in model-based security analysis

    Successful analysis of the models used in Model-Driven Development requires the ability to synthesise the results of analysis and automatically integrate these results with the models themselves. This paper presents a reversible template language called XRound which supports round-trip transformations between models and the logic used to encode system properties. A template processor that supports the language is described, and the use of the template language is illustrated by its application in an analysis workbench, designed to support analysis of security properties of UML and MOF-based models. As a result of using reversible templates, it is possible to seamlessly and automatically integrate the results of a security analysis with a model. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

    Improving Search-Based Schematic Layout by Parameter Manipulation

    This paper reports on a method to improve the automated layout of schematic diagrams by widening the search space examined by the system. In search-based layout methods there are typically a number of parameters that control the search algorithm which do not affect the fitness function, but nevertheless have an impact on the final layout. We explore how varying three parameters (grid spacing, the starting distance of allowed node movement and the number of iterations) affects the resultant diagram in a hill- climbing layout system. Using an iterative process, we produce diagram layouts that are significantly better than those produced by ad-hoc parameter settings

    Gesture-Based Input for Drawing Schematics on a Mobile Device

    We present a system for drawing metro map style schematics using a gesture-based interface. This work brings together techniques in gesture recognition on touch-sensitive devices with research in schematic layout of networks. The software allows users to create and edit schematic networks, and provides an automated layout method for improving the appearance of the schematic. A case study using the metro map metaphor to visualize social networks and web site structure is described

    In search-based graph drawing methods there are typically a number of parameters that control the search algorithm. These parameters do not affect the ?tness function, but nevertheless have an impact on the ?nal layout. One such search method is hill climbing, and, in the context of schematic layout, we explore how varying three parameters (grid spacing, the starting distance of allowed node movement and the number of iterations) affects the resultant diagram. Although we cannot characterize schematics completely and so cannot yet automatically assign parameters for diagrams, we observe that when parameters are set to values that increase the search space, they also tend to improve the ?nal layout. We come to the conclusion that hillclimbing methods for schematic layout are more prone to reaching local optima than had previously been expected and that a wider search, as described in this paper, can mitigate this, so resulting in a better layout

    Objective: To assess the referral practice for surveillance colonoscopy amongst clinicians and to measure whether practice was inline with the current Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland (ACPGBI) and the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) guidelines. Method: A questionnaire was sent to members of the ACPGBI. Results: A total of 195 (49%) clinicians responded, providing information on their referral habits with comments on where they deviated from the guidelines. Conclusions: The BSG and ACPGBI guidelines are well established amongst clinicians and generally accepted as best practice however the majority of clinicians deviate from the guidelines for particular clinical scenarios. In fact only 18% of respondents followed all recommendations for surveillance colonoscopy for patients with polyps, previous cancers and a family history

    Disorders of sex development: developmental challenges and mothers' experiences of support

    An increasing body of research has sought to determine the impact of Disorders of Sex Development (DSD) on the family of the affected child. Little is currently understood about the support needs of the family and how well these needs are met. With a focus on mothers as primary caregivers, Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis was used to analyse semi-structured interviews with eight mothers of children with DSD about their experiences of support. Four master themes emerged which encapsulated the stages in their child’s development when mothers most needed support, the importance of developing an understanding of the child’s condition, the lack of an acknowledgement of the emotional needs of the parent, and the importance of having close and trusted networks for support. Continuity and availability of support were considered important and while all participants prioritised maintaining privacy about the condition, a minority felt that this impacted on the level of support they received. Key periods of time for support were identified and while some felt that they were well supported others felt that their support did not meet their emotional needs. The results were discussed in light of previous research, and the clinical implications considered

    Genetic predictors of match performance in sub-elite Australian football players: A pilot study

    The current study aimed to determine whether previously identified candidate polymorphisms were associated with match performance in sub-elite Australian Rules Football (ARF) players. The genotypes of thirty players were analysed along with 3x1-kilometre time trial results, ARF-specific skill assessments (handball and kicking), and match performance (direct game involvements) per minute (DGIs/min) to investigate if there was a relationship between any of the variables. Results support previous findings that aerobic time trials are a significant predictor of DGIs/min in sub-elite ARF players. Significant associations were found for genotypes ADRB2 CC (p = .001), PPARGC1A AA (p = .001), PPARGC1A AG (p \u3c .001), ACE ID (p \u3c .001), COMT AA (p = .003), BDNF AG (p = .008), ADRB1 CC (p = .018) and ADRB3 CC (p = .010) and the 3x1-kilometre time trials (p \u3c .001). In the current study, a variant in the DRD2 gene was a strong predictor of handball possessions during a match. Significance was seen for variants in the BDNF and COMTgenes when the kicking and handball skill test results were combined and used in a linear mixed model to predict DGIs/min, suggesting a potential relationship with motor learning. The confirmation of genetic predictors of player performance in a team sport, such as ARF, suggests a portion of the physiological mechanisms of skill and ARF-specific talent may be explained by the expression of a specific number of genes

    Exercise can improve physical self perceptions in adolescents with low motor competence

    Adolescents with low motor competence have diminished perceptions of their physical self and tend to avoid physical activities. This study examined the outcomes of an exercise intervention that focused on improving aerobic fitness, strength, and self-perceptions in the physical domain in adolescents with poor motor coordination. The sample included 35 adolescents with low motor competence, comprising boys (n = 25) and girls (n = 10) ranging in age from 13 to 17 years, who attended two sessions per week in the 13 week exercise intervention study (AMP it up). Physical self-perceptions were measured before and after the intervention using the Physical Self Perception Profile and Perceived Importance Profile. Significant improvements in perceived Physical Condition, Attractive Body and Physical Strength sub domain scores were identified between pre and post-test. Adjusting for age, gender, BMI and attendance, regression analyses revealed that Attractive Body was the strongest predictor of Physical Self Worth at pre-test, joined by Physical Condition at post-test. This exercise intervention had a positive impact on adolescent physical self-perceptions, in particular males, with improvements in those sub domains specifically related to the exercise program. Changes in specific aspects of Physical Self Worth can be facilitated by exercise interventions, after a relatively short period of time, in adolescents with poor motor coordination

    What aspects of group work influence learner experience at Cranfield University?

    Employers consider the ability to work in groups essential and higher education has adopted group working in programmes to meet this necessity. However, current reporting fails to identify which aspects are positively or negatively associated with students’ experiences. Therefore the phenomena of interest in this study are the use of group working in taught Masters level programmes as preparation for learners’ subsequent professional work and those aspects of group work which influence their experience. An exploratory qualitative study was undertaken using semi-structured, one to one interviews as the primary source of data. Interviews were undertaken with students, module leaders and programme directors from four modules on four different programmes from Cranfield University. The findings showed how the principle of providing students with realistic experiences of their disciplines in a working environment governed decisions on task and selection. Learners reported varying prior experience of group work, difficulties in understanding how to work in groups and a perception of little support from their instructors. Training on effective group working was inadequate. Descriptions of unequal contribution were widespread, though this was not recounted as being related to the international nature of the groups. Learners overall had a positive experience and found activities supported their technical learning and familiarity with industry’s working methods. The research indicated direct contact with clients was of greater benefit and was a stimulus for students. The assumptions regarding students’ previous experiences and learning about group processes, linked to the lack of training they received, resulted in poor experiences in this respect. Training was presented as the area most requiring improvement. Enhancements would offer opportunities to support engagement by students in addressing conflict, interpersonal relations and perceived failure to contribute. Similarly, training instructors on facilitation would lead to better resolution of unacceptable group working practices
