Insights into the catalytic production of hydrogen from propane in the presence of oxygen: cooperative presence of vanadium and gold catalysts
[EN] H-2 and propylene can be obtained from propane and oxygen in defect using appropriate catalysts. Meanwhile propylene is formed from propane via oxidative or non-oxidative dehydrogenation, molecular hydrogen can be obtained from several reactions such as propane dehydrogenation, coke formation and water gas shift. It has been observed that a gold catalyst hardly activates propane and no H-2 was detected, whereas using vanadium oxide a relatively high concentration of propylene and H-2 was obtained. Interestingly, the simultaneous use of vanadium oxide and gold has meant a higher hydrogen production, higher in a 40% than that of the catalyst containing only vanadium oxide. This performance has been. related to the capacity of gold to activate CO in the water gas shift reaction. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Counter-propagating radiative shock experiments on the Orion laser and the formation of radiative precursors
We present results from new experiments to study the dynamics of radiative
shocks, reverse shocks and radiative precursors. Laser ablation of a solid
piston by the Orion high-power laser at AWE Aldermaston UK was used to drive
radiative shocks into a gas cell initially pressurised between and $1.0 \
bar with different noble gases. Shocks propagated at {80 \pm 10 \ km/s} and
experienced strong radiative cooling resulting in post-shock compressions of {
\times 25 \pm 2}. A combination of X-ray backlighting, optical self-emission
streak imaging and interferometry (multi-frame and streak imaging) were used to
simultaneously study both the shock front and the radiative precursor. These
experiments present a new configuration to produce counter-propagating
radiative shocks, allowing for the study of reverse shocks and providing a
unique platform for numerical validation. In addition, the radiative shocks
were able to expand freely into a large gas volume without being confined by
the walls of the gas cell. This allows for 3-D effects of the shocks to be
studied which, in principle, could lead to a more direct comparison to
astrophysical phenomena. By maintaining a constant mass density between
different gas fills the shocks evolved with similar hydrodynamics but the
radiative precursor was found to extend significantly further in higher atomic
number gases (\sim4$ times further in xenon than neon). Finally, 1-D and 2-D
radiative-hydrodynamic simulations are presented showing good agreement with

Isospin influences on particle emission and critical phenomenon in nuclear dissociation
Features of particle emission and critical point behavior are investigated as
functions of the isospin of disassembling sources and temperature at a moderate
freeze-out density for medium-size Xe isotopes in the framework of isospin
dependent lattice gas model. Multiplicities of emitted light particles,
isotopic and isobaric ratios of light particles show the strong dependence on
the isospin of the dissociation source, but double ratios of light isotope
pairs and the critical temperature determined by the extreme values of some
critical observables are insensitive to the isospin of the systems. Values of
the power law parameter of cluster mass distribution, mean multiplicity of
intermediate mass fragments (), information entropy () and Campi's
second moment () also show a minor dependence on the isospin of Xe
isotopes at the critical point. In addition, the slopes of the average
multiplicites of the neutrons (), protons (), charged particles
(), and IMFs (), slopes of the largest fragment mass number
(), and the excitation energy per nucleon of the disassembling source
() to temperature are investigated as well as variances of the
distributions of , , , , and . It
is found that they can be taken as additional judgements to the critical

Top-Quark Mediated Effects in Hadronic Higgs-Strahlung
Novel contributions to the total inclusive cross section for Higgs-Strahlung
in the Standard Model at hadron colliders are evaluated. Although formally of
order , they have not been taken into account in previous NNLO
predictions. The terms under consideration are induced by Higgs radiation off
top-quark loops and thus proportional to the top-quark Yukawa coupling. At the
Tevatron, their effects to HW production are below 1% in the relevant Higgs
mass range, while for HZ production, we find corrections between about 1% and
2%. At the LHC, the contribution of the newly evaluated terms to the cross
section is typically of the order of 1%-3%. Based on these results, we provide
updated predictions for the total inclusive Higgs-Strahlung cross section at

System Size and Energy Dependence of Jet-Induced Hadron Pair Correlation Shapes in Cu+Cu and Au+Au Collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 and 62.4 GeV
We present azimuthal angle correlations of intermediate transverse momentum
(1-4 GeV/c) hadrons from {dijets} in Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) =
62.4 and 200 GeV. The away-side dijet induced azimuthal correlation is
broadened, non-Gaussian, and peaked away from \Delta\phi=\pi in central and
semi-central collisions in all the systems. The broadening and peak location
are found to depend upon the number of participants in the collision, but not
on the collision energy or beam nuclei. These results are consistent with sound

Scaling properties of azimuthal anisotropy in Au+Au and Cu+Cu collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV
Detailed differential measurements of the elliptic flow for particles
produced in Au+Au and Cu+Cu collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV are presented.
Predictions from perfect fluid hydrodynamics for the scaling of the elliptic
flow coefficient v_2 with eccentricity, system size and transverse energy are
tested and validated. For transverse kinetic energies KE_T ~ m_T-m up to ~1
GeV, scaling compatible with the hydrodynamic expansion of a thermalized fluid
is observed for all produced particles. For large values of KE_T, the mesons
and baryons scale separately. A universal scaling for the flow of both mesons
and baryons is observed for the full transverse kinetic energy range of the
data when quark number scaling is employed. In both cases the scaling is more

Correlated Production of p and p^bar in Au+Au Collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV
Correlations between p and pbar's at transverse momenta typical of enhanced
baryon production in Au+Au collisions are reported. The PHENIX experiment
measures same and opposite sign baryon pairs in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)
= 200 GeV. Correlated production of p and p^bar with the trigger particle from
the range 2.5 < p_T < 4.0 GeV/c and the associated particle with 1.8 < p_T <
2.5 GeV/c is observed to be nearly independent of the centrality of the
collisions. Same sign pairs show no correlation at any centrality. The
conditional yield of mesons triggered by baryons (and anti-baryons) and mesons
in the same pT range rises with increasing centrality, except for the most
central collisions, where baryons show a significantly smaller number of
associated mesons. These data are consistent with a picture in which hard
scattered partons produce correlated p and p^bar in the p_T region of the

Search for the Chiral Magnetic Effect in Au+Au collisions at GeV with the STAR forward Event Plane Detectors
A decisive experimental test of the Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME) is
considered one of the major scientific goals at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion
Collider (RHIC) towards understanding the nontrivial topological fluctuations
of the Quantum Chromodynamics vacuum. In heavy-ion collisions, the CME is
expected to result in a charge separation phenomenon across the reaction plane,
whose strength could be strongly energy dependent. The previous CME searches
have been focused on top RHIC energy collisions. In this Letter, we present a
low energy search for the CME in Au+Au collisions at
GeV. We measure elliptic flow scaled charge-dependent correlators relative to
the event planes that are defined at both mid-rapidity and at
forward rapidity . We compare the results based on the
directed flow plane () at forward rapidity and the elliptic flow plane
() at both central and forward rapidity. The CME scenario is expected
to result in a larger correlation relative to than to , while
a flow driven background scenario would lead to a consistent result for both
event planes[1,2]. In 10-50\% centrality, results using three different event
planes are found to be consistent within experimental uncertainties, suggesting
a flow driven background scenario dominating the measurement. We obtain an
upper limit on the deviation from a flow driven background scenario at the 95\%
confidence level. This work opens up a possible road map towards future CME
search with the high statistics data from the RHIC Beam Energy Scan Phase-II.Comment: main: 8 pages, 5 figures; supplementary material: 2 pages, 1 figur
Age at first birth in women is genetically associated with increased risk of schizophrenia
Prof. Paunio on PGC:n jäsenPrevious studies have shown an increased risk for mental health problems in children born to both younger and older parents compared to children of average-aged parents. We previously used a novel design to reveal a latent mechanism of genetic association between schizophrenia and age at first birth in women (AFB). Here, we use independent data from the UK Biobank (N = 38,892) to replicate the finding of an association between predicted genetic risk of schizophrenia and AFB in women, and to estimate the genetic correlation between schizophrenia and AFB in women stratified into younger and older groups. We find evidence for an association between predicted genetic risk of schizophrenia and AFB in women (P-value = 1.12E-05), and we show genetic heterogeneity between younger and older AFB groups (P-value = 3.45E-03). The genetic correlation between schizophrenia and AFB in the younger AFB group is -0.16 (SE = 0.04) while that between schizophrenia and AFB in the older AFB group is 0.14 (SE = 0.08). Our results suggest that early, and perhaps also late, age at first birth in women is associated with increased genetic risk for schizophrenia in the UK Biobank sample. These findings contribute new insights into factors contributing to the complex bio-social risk architecture underpinning the association between parental age and offspring mental health.Peer reviewe
