    Au cours de deux essais en champ, cinquante-deux espèces et variétés de #Musa ont été testées pour leur sensibilité envers les nématodes #Rodopholus similis, Hoplolaimus pararobustus et #Meloidogyne incognita. Le groupe des bananiers plantains AAB présente la plus grande sensibilité tant envers #R. similis que #H. pararobustus. Les types AAA et ABB marquent une tendance vers une moindre sensibilité à #R. similis, quelques variétés étant même proches de la résistance. #H. pararobustus et #M. incognita sont moins représentés que #R. similis$ et dans leur cas les différences variétales de sensibilité sont moins marquées.     Plant parasitic nematodes of plantain and other crops in Cameroon, West Africa

    Une prospection nématologique du bananier plantain effectuée au Cameroun chez de petits exploitants agricoles a permis de récolter 33 espèces appartenant à dix-huit genres dont treize espèces endoparasites. En termes de dommages et d'extension géographique, les espèces les plus importantes sont #Pratylenchius goodeyi, Radopholus similis et #Helicotylenchus multicinctus. P. coffeae est également présent dans quelques zones. C'est la première fois que #P. goodevi est signalé comme parasite majeur des racines du bananier plantain en Afrique de l'Ouest et cela dans une importante proportion des plantations prospectées. La répartition de #P. goodeyi et de #R. similis est associée aux températures des différentes altitudes : #P. goodeyi est principalement trouvé au-dessus de 900 m d'altitude tandis que #R. similis est toujours trouvé au-dessous de 900 m.     Non Linear Current Response of a Many-Level Tunneling System: Higher Harmonics Generation

    The fully nonlinear response of a many-level tunneling system to a strong alternating field of high frequency ω\omega is studied in terms of the Schwinger-Keldysh nonequilibrium Green functions. The nonlinear time dependent tunneling current I(t)I(t) is calculated exactly and its resonance structure is elucidated. In particular, it is shown that under certain reasonable conditions on the physical parameters, the Fourier component InI_{n} is sharply peaked at n=ΔEωn=\frac {\Delta E} {\hbar \omega}, where ΔE\Delta E is the spacing between two levels. This frequency multiplication results from the highly nonlinear process of nn photon absorption (or emission) by the tunneling system.     Environmental Determinants of Infectious Disease: A Framework for Tracking Causal Links and Guiding Public Health Research

    BACKGROUND: Discoveries that emerging and re-emerging pathogens have their origin in environmental change has created an urgent need to understand how these environmental changes impact disease burden. In this article we present a framework that provides a context from which to examine the relationship between environmental changes and disease transmission and a structure from which to unite disparate pieces of information from a variety of disciplines. METHODS: The framework integrates three interrelated characteristics of environment–disease relationships: a) Environmental change manifests in a complex web of ecologic and social factors that may ultimately impact disease; these factors are represented as those more distally related and those more proximally related to disease. b) Transmission dynamics of infectious pathogens mediate the effects that environmental changes have on disease. c) Disease burden is the outcome of the interplay between environmental change and the transmission cycle of a pathogen. RESULTS: To put this framework into operation, we present a matrix formulation as a means to define important elements of this system and to summarize what is known and unknown about the these elements and their relationships.     Understanding morphological variation in the extant koala as a framework for identification of species boundaries in extinct koalas (Phascolarctidae; Marsupialia)

    We document morphological variation (both geographical and sexual) in the dentition of the extant koala, Phascolarctos cinereus, in order to facilitate discrimination of species boundaries in extinct phascolarctids. Considerable variation is evident in dental structures previously used to diagnose several phascolarctid fossil species. Consistent patterns of morphological variation are not evident between sexes or geographic regions, with variation as great between samples as within them. Metric variation is evident between the sexes in upper molar dimensions with Victorian (southern) males significantly larger than Victorian females, although this is not reflected in lower molar dimensions or in the Queensland (northern) sample. Male koalas from southern populations generally display significantly larger molars than their northern counterparts; however this trend is not evident in female upper molar dimensions. In both males and females, some, but not all, lower molar dimensions are larger in southern populations than northern. In light of these results, a systematic revision of species of Litokoala suggests L. dicktedfordi' is a junior synonym of L. kutjamarpensis, and the poorly known L. thurmerae is regarded to be a nomen dubium. Further, we describe a partial cranium of a new species of koala from Early Miocene sediments in the Riversleigh World Heritage Area, northern Australia. Litokoala dicksmithi sp. nov. is the fifth koala species recorded from the diverse rainforest assemblages of Riversleigh and the third species referred to the Oligo-Miocene genus Litokoala. Aspects of cranial morphology, including a shortened robust rostrum and broad, irregular nasal aperture, confirm placement of Litokoala as sister taxon to the modern genus Phascolarctos. Relatively large orbits and small body size suggest the possibility that L. dicksmithi was nocturnal, had enhanced visual acuity, and was a more agile arboreal species than the relatively sedentary extant koala

    Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in √s = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results

    Jet size dependence of single jet suppression in lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s(NN)) = 2.76 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC

    Measurements of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions at the LHC provide direct sensitivity to the physics of jet quenching. In a sample of lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s) = 2.76 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of approximately 7 inverse microbarns, ATLAS has measured jets with a calorimeter over the pseudorapidity interval |eta| < 2.1 and over the transverse momentum range 38 < pT < 210 GeV. Jets were reconstructed using the anti-kt algorithm with values for the distance parameter that determines the nominal jet radius of R = 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5. The centrality dependence of the jet yield is characterized by the jet "central-to-peripheral ratio," Rcp. Jet production is found to be suppressed by approximately a factor of two in the 10% most central collisions relative to peripheral collisions. Rcp varies smoothly with centrality as characterized by the number of participating nucleons. The observed suppression is only weakly dependent on jet radius and transverse momentum. These results provide the first direct measurement of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions and complement previous measurements of dijet transverse energy imbalance at the LHC.Comment: 15 pages plus author list (30 pages total), 8 figures, 2 tables, submitted to Physics Letters B.
