    Universality of random matrices in the microscopic limit and the Dirac operator spectrum

    We prove the universality of correlation functions of chiral unitary and unitary ensembles of random matrices in the microscopic limit. The essence of the proof consists in reducing the three-term recursion relation for the relevant orthogonal polynomials into a Bessel equation governing the local asymptotics around the origin. The possible physical interpretation as the universality of the soft spectrum of the Dirac operator is briefly discussed

    Non-Perturbative String Equations for Type 0A

    Well-defined non-perturbative formulations of the physics of string theories, sometimes with D-branes present, were identified over a decade ago, from a careful study of double scaled matrix models. Following recent work which recasts some of those old results in the context of type 0 string theory, a study is made of a much larger family of models, which are proposed as type 0A models of the entire superconformal minimal series coupled to gravity. This gives many further examples of important physical phenomena, including non-perturbative descriptions of transitions between D-branes and fluxes, tachyon condensation, and holography. In particular, features of a large family of non-perturbatively stable string equations are studied, and results are extracted which pertain to type 0A string theory, with D-branes and fluxes, in this large class of backgrounds. For the entire construction to work, large parts of the spectrum of the supergravitationally dressed superconformal minimal models and that of the gravitationally dressed bosonic conformal minimal models must coincide, and it is shown how this happens. The example of the super-dressed tricritical Ising model is studied in some detail.Comment: 29 pages LaTe

    Gamma Efficiency Simulations towards Coincidence Measurements for Fusion Cross Sections

    With the experimental station STELLA (STELlar LAboratory) we will measure fusion cross sections of astrophysical relevance making use of the coincident detection of charged particles and gamma rays for background reduction. For the measurement of gamma rays from the de-excitation of fusion products a compact array of 36 UK FATIMA LaBr3 detectors is designed based on efficiency studies with Geant4. The photo peak efficiency in the region of interest compares to other gamma detection systems used in this field. The features of the internal decay of 138La is used in a background study to obtain an online calibration of the gamma detectors. Background data are fit to the Monte Carlo model of the self activity assuming crude exponential behavior of external background. Accuracy in the region of interest is of the order of some keV in this first study

    We find the microscopic spectral densities and the spectral correlators associated with multicritical behavior for both hermitian and complex matrix ensembles, and show their universality. We conjecture that microscopic spectral densities of Dirac operators in certain theories without spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking may belong to these new universality classes

    Perchlorate on Mars - Overview and Implications

    Perchlorate was first detected on Mars by the Wet Chemistry Laboratory (WCL) instrument on the Phoenix lander at a concentration of ~0.5 wt% in northern plains soils. Since that initial detection, perchlorate (and likely chlorate) have been detected on Mars by both surface and orbital instruments. Perchlorate (ClO4-) is an oxidized chlorine compound and salts of perchlorate are kinetically stable (though very reactive at high temperature), very soluble, deliquescent, and have low eutectic temperature (which decreases the temperature for stable liquids on Mars). Chlorate (ClO3-) salts are similar, though they are less kinetically stable than perchlorates. Because many of the analytical signatures of perchlorate and chlorate are similar to the instruments we have used on Mars, we cannot always determine which species is present, so we will use the more generic term oxychlorine when referring to perchlorate and/or chlorate

    The experimental setup STELLA (STELlar LAboratory) is designed for the measurement of deep sub-barrier light heavy ion fusion cross sections. For background suppression the γ-particle coincidence technique is used. In this project, LaBr3 detectors from the UK FATIMA (FAst TIMing Array) collaboration are combined with annular silicon strip detectors customized at IPHC-CNRS, Strasbourg, and the setup is located at Andromède, IPN, Orsay. The commissioning of the experimental approach as well as a sub-barrier 12C +12C → 24Mg∗ cross section measurement campaign are carried out

    An Integrated TCGA Pan-Cancer Clinical Data Resource to Drive High-Quality Survival Outcome Analytics

    For a decade, The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) program collected clinicopathologic annotation data along with multi-platform molecular profiles of more than 11,000 human tumors across 33 different cancer types. TCGA clinical data contain key features representing the democratized nature of the data collection process. To ensure proper use of this large clinical dataset associated with genomic features, we developed a standardized dataset named the TCGA Pan-Cancer Clinical Data Resource (TCGA-CDR), which includes four major clinical outcome endpoints. In addition to detailing major challenges and statistical limitations encountered during the effort of integrating the acquired clinical data, we present a summary that includes endpoint usage recommendations for each cancer type. These TCGA-CDR findings appear to be consistent with cancer genomics studies independent of the TCGA effort and provide opportunities for investigating cancer biology using clinical correlates at an unprecedented scale. Analysis of clinicopathologic annotations for over 11,000 cancer patients in the TCGA program leads to the generation of TCGA Clinical Data Resource, which provides recommendations of clinical outcome endpoint usage for 33 cancer types

    Standalone vertex finding in the ATLAS muon spectrometer

    A dedicated reconstruction algorithm to find decay vertices in the ATLAS muon spectrometer is presented. The algorithm searches the region just upstream of or inside the muon spectrometer volume for multi-particle vertices that originate from the decay of particles with long decay paths. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated using both a sample of simulated Higgs boson events, in which the Higgs boson decays to long-lived neutral particles that in turn decay to bbar b final states, and pp collision data at √s = 7 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC during 2011

    Measurements of Higgs boson production and couplings in diboson final states with the ATLAS detector at the LHC

    Measurements are presented of production properties and couplings of the recently discovered Higgs boson using the decays into boson pairs, H →γ γ, H → Z Z∗ →4l and H →W W∗ →lνlν. The results are based on the complete pp collision data sample recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider at centre-of-mass energies of √s = 7 TeV and √s = 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 25 fb−1. Evidence for Higgs boson production through vector-boson fusion is reported. Results of combined fits probing Higgs boson couplings to fermions and bosons, as well as anomalous contributions to loop-induced production and decay modes, are presented. All measurements are consistent with expectations for the Standard Model Higgs boson
