    Mechanochemical feedback mediates tissue bending required for seedling emergence

    Tissue bending is vital to plant development, as exemplified by apical hook formation during seedling emergence by bending of the hypocotyl. How tissue bending is coordinated during development remains poorly understood, especially in plants where cells are attached via rigid cell walls. Asymmetric distribution of the plant hormone auxin underlies differential cell elongation during apical hook formation. Yet the underlying mechanism remains unclear. Here, we demonstrate spatial correlation between asymmetric auxin distribution, methylesterified homogalacturonan (HG) pectin, and mechanical properties of the epidermal layer of the hypocotyl in Arabidopsis. Genetic and cell biological approaches show that this mechanochemical asymmetry is essential for differential cell elongation. We show that asymmetric auxin distribution underlies differential HG methylesterification, and conversely changes in HG methylesterification impact the auxin response domain. Our results suggest that a positive feedback loop between auxin distribution and HG methylesterification underpins asymmetric cell wall mechanochemical properties to promote tissue bending and seedling emergence

    An RPC-based Technical Trigger for the CMS Experiment

    In the CMS experiment, sub-detectors may send special trigger signals, called "Technical Triggers", for special purposes like test and calibration. The Resistive Plate Chambers are part of the Muon Trigger System of the experiment, but might also produce a cosmic muon trigger as Technical Trigger to be used during the commissioning to the detectors, the CMS magnet Test Cosmic Challenge and the later running of CMS. The proposed implementation is based on the development of a new board, the RBC Balcony Collector (RBC); the test results on prototypes and their performance during the recent CMS Cosmic Challenge are presented

    Resistive Plate Chambers performance with Cosmic Rays in the CMS experiment

    The Resistive Plate Chambers are used in the CMS experiment as a dedicated muon trigger both in barrel and endcap system. About 4000 square meter of double gap RPCs have been produced and have been installed in the experiment since more than one year and half. The full barrel system and a fraction of the endcaps have been monitored to study dark current behaviour and system stability, and have been extensively commissioned with Cosmic Rays collected by the full CMS experiment

    A finite strain fibre-reinforced viscoelasto-viscoplastic model of plant cell wall growth

    A finite strain fibre-reinforced viscoelasto-viscoplastic model implemented in a finite element (FE) analysis is presented to study the expansive growth of plant cell walls. Three components of the deformation of growing cell wall, i.e. elasticity, viscoelasticity and viscoplasticity-like growth, are modelled within a consistent framework aiming to present an integrative growth model. The two aspects of growth—turgor-driven creep and new material deposition—and the interplay between them are considered by presenting a yield function, flow rule and hardening law. A fibre-reinforcement formulation is used to account for the role of cellulose microfibrils in the anisotropic growth. Mechanisms in in vivo growth are taken into account to represent the corresponding biologycontrolled behaviour of a cell wall. A viscoelastic formulation is proposed to capture the viscoelastic response in the cell wall. The proposed constitutive model provides a unique framework for modelling both the in vivo growth of cell wall dominated by viscoplasticity-like behaviour and in vitro deformation dominated by elastic or viscoelastic responses. A numerical scheme is devised, and FE case studies are reported and compared with experimental data

    This paper presents implementation of distributed, multichannel electronic measurement system for RPC - based Muon Trigger in the CMS experiment at LHC. The introduction shortly describes the research aims of LHC and shows the metrological requirements for CMS - good spatial and time resolution, and possibility to estimate multiple physical parameters from registered collisions of particles. Further the paper describes RPC Muon Trigger consisting of 200 000 independent channels for position measurement. The first part of the paper presents the functional structure of the system in the context of requirements put by the CMS experiment, like global triggering system and data acquisition. The second part describes the hardware solutions used in particular parts of the RPC detector measuremnt system and shows some test results. The paper has a digest and overview nature

    Studies of charm and beauty hadron long-range correlations in pp and pPb collisions at LHC energies

    Measurements of the second Fourier harmonic coefficient (v(2)) of the azimuthal distributions of prompt and nonprompt D-0 mesons produced in pp and pPb collisions are presented. Nonprompt D-0 mesons come from beauty hadron decays. The data samples are collected by the CMS experiment at nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energies of 13 and 8.16 TeV, respectively. In high multiplicity pp collisions, v(2) signals for prompt charm hadrons are reported for the first time, and are found to be comparable to those for light-flavor hadron species over a transverse momentum (pT) range of 2-6 GeV. Compared at similar event multiplicities, the prompt D-0 meson v(2) values in pp and pPb collisions are similar in magnitude. The v(2) values for open beauty hadrons are extracted for the first time via nonprompt D-0 mesons in pPb collisions. For pT in the range of 2-5 GeV, the results suggest that v(2) for nonprompt D-0 mesons is smaller than that for prompt D-0 mesons. These new measurements indicate a positive charm hadron v(2) in pp collisions and suggest a mass dependence in v(2) between charm and beauty hadrons in the pPb system. These results provide insights into the origin of heavy-flavor quark collectivity in small systems. (C) 2020 The Author(s). Published by Elsevier B.V.Peer reviewe
