    Adsorption processes of heavy metals in soils have been more extensively studied than desorption, in spite of this latter process being related to nutrient bioavailability in the soil solution. Copper desorption from surface (0-0.2 m) and subsurface (1.0 - 1.2 m) samples of an Anionic Acrudox was studied at two pH values (4.5 and 7.5). Soil samples were incubated with Cu rates varying from 0 to 400 mg kg-1, during 4 and 12 weeks, in the presence of CaCl2 as support electrolyte at concentrations of 0.01 and 0.001 mol L-1. Complete soil adsorption of added Cu was observed at pH 7.5 in all incubation periods, indicating that a 24h-shaking period was enough to reach equilibrium and maximum adsorption. Copper adsorption varied with the incubation period and was much lower at pH 4.5 than at pH 7.5, after the 24 hour-incubation period. After 4 and 12 weeks, Cu adsorption values were higher and similar for all soil samples, irrespective of pH or depth of sampling. The effect of the incubation period on soil Cu adsorption surpassed the pH effect for all Cu rates. The hysteresis was expressive, suggesting that Cu enhances high-energy bonds with the soil colloids. Calcium chloride was not efficient in promoting native soil Cu desorption in the studied concentrations.<br>A adsorção de metais pesados aos solos é mais estudada do que sua dessorção. No entanto, o processo de dessorção está diretamente relacionado à disponibilidade dos elementos às plantas. A dessorção de cobre em amostras superficiais (0-0,2 m) e subsuperficiais (1,0-1,2 m) de um Latossolo Vermelho acriférrico foi estudada em dois valores de pH (4,5 e 7,5). A adsorção de Cu variou com o tempo de incubação do elemento com o solo. No pH mais baixo (4,5), a adsorção foi bem menor após 24 h de incubação. Após 4 e 12 semanas, as adsorções foram elevadas e semelhantes para todas as amostras, independentemente da profundidade e do pH. Para todas as doses estudadas, o efeito do tempo de incubação na adsorção de cobre pelo solo sobrepujou o efeito do pH. D0^0, D+^+ and D+^{*+} mesons are reconstructed via their hadronic decay channels in the centre-of-mass rapidity range 0.96<ycms<0.04-0.96< y_{\mathrm{cms}}<0.04 and transverse momentum interval 1<pT<241<p_{\rm T}<24 GeV/cc. The multiplicity dependence of D-meson production is examined by either comparing yields in p-Pb collisions in different event classes, selected based on the multiplicity of produced particles or zero-degree energy, with those in pp collisions, scaled by the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions (nuclear modification factor); as well as by evaluating the per-event yields in p-Pb collisions in different multiplicity intervals normalised to the multiplicity-integrated ones (relative yields). The nuclear modification factors for D0^0, D+^+ and D+^{*+} are consistent with one another. The D-meson nuclear modification factors as a function of the zero-degree energy are consistent with unity within uncertainties in the measured pTp_{\rm T} regions and event classes. The relative D-meson yields, calculated in various pTp_{\rm T} intervals, increase as a function of the charged-particle multiplicity. The results are compared with the equivalent pp measurements at s=7\sqrt{s}=7 TeV as well as with EPOS~3 calculations

    Centrality dependence of ψ(2S) suppression in p-Pb collisions at √sNN= 5.02 TeV

    The inclusive production of the ψ(2S) charmonium state was studied as a function of centrality in p-Pb collisions at the nucleon-nucleon center of mass energy √sNN = 5.02 TeV at the CERN LHC. The measurement was performed with the ALICE detector in the center of mass rapidity ranges −4.46 &amp;lt; ycms&amp;lt; −2.96 and 2.03 &amp;lt; ycms&amp;lt; 3.53, down to zero transverse momentum, by reconstructing the ψ(2S) decay to a muon pair. The ψ(2S) production cross section σψ(2S) is presented as a function of the collision centrality, which is estimated through the energy deposited in forward rapidity calorimeters. The relative strength of nuclear effects on the ψ(2S) and on the corresponding 1S charmonium state J/ψ is then studied by means of the double ratio of cross sections [σψ(2S)/σJ/ψ]pPb/[σψ(2S)/σJ/ψ]pp between p-Pb and pp collisions, and by the values of the nuclear modification factors for the two charmonium states. The results show a large suppression of ψ(2S) production relative to the J/ψ at backward (negative) rapidity, corresponding to the flight direction of the Pb-nucleus, while at forward (positive) rapidity the suppressions of the two states are comparable. Finally, comparisons to results from lower energy experiments and to available theoretical models are presented. © 2016, The Author(s)

    Measurement of electrons from beauty-hadron decays in p-Pb collisions at √sNN=5.02 TeV and Pb-Pb collisions at √sNN=2.76 TeV

    The production of beauty hadrons was measured via semi-leptonic decays at mid-rapidity with the ALICE detector at the LHC in the transverse momentum interval 1&amp;lt;pT&amp;lt; 8 GeV/c in minimum-bias p-Pb collisions at sNN=5.02 TeV and in 1.3 &amp;lt; pT&amp;lt; 8 GeV/c in the 20% most central Pb-Pb collisions at sNN=2.76 TeV. The pp reference spectra at sNN=5.02 TeV and s=2.76 TeV, needed for the calculation of the nuclear modification factors RpPb and RPbPb, were obtained by a pQCD-driven scaling of the cross section of electrons from beauty-hadron decays measured at s=7 TeV. In the pT interval 3 &amp;lt; pT&amp;lt; 8 GeV/c, a suppression of the yield of electrons from beauty-hadron decays is observed in Pb-Pb compared to pp collisions. Towards lower pT, the RPbPb values increase with large systematic uncertainties. The RpPb is consistent with unity within systematic uncertainties and is well described by theoretical calculations that include cold nuclear matter effects in p-Pb collisions. The measured RpPb and these calculations indicate that cold nuclear matter effects are small at high transverse momentum also in Pb-Pb collisions. Therefore., the observed reduction of RPbPb below unity at high pT may be ascribed to an effect of the hot and dense medium formed in Pb-Pb collisions.[Figure not available: see fulltext.] © 2017, The Author(s)
