    Photoluminescence and charge transfer in the prototypical 2D/3D semiconductor heterostructure MoS<sub>2</sub>/GaAs

    The new generation of two-dimensional (2D) materials has shown a broad range of applications for optical and electronic devices. Understanding the properties of these materials when integrated with the more traditional three-dimensional (3D) semiconductors is an important challenge for the implementation of ultra-thin electronic devices. Recent observations have shown that by combining MoS2_2 with GaAs it is possible to develop high quality photodetectors and solar cells. Here, we present a study of the effects of intrinsic GaAs, p-doped GaAs, and n-doped GaAs substrates on the photoluminescence of monolayer MoS2_2. We observe a decrease of an order of magnitude in the emission intensity of MoS2_2 in all MoS2_2/GaAs heterojunctions, when compared to a control sample consisting of a MoS2_2 monolayer isolated from GaAs by a few layers of hexagonal boron nitride. We also see a dependence of the trion to A-exciton emission ratio in the photoluminescence spectra on the type of substrate, a dependence that we relate to the static charge exchange between MoS2_2 and the substrates when the junction is formed. Scanning Kelvin probe microscopy measurements of the heterojunctions suggest type-I band alignments, so that excitons generated on the MoS2_2 monolayer will be transferred to the GaAs substrate. Our results shed light on the charge exchange leading to band offsets in 2D/3D heterojunctions which play a central role in the understanding and further improvement of electronic devices.Comment: Accepted in Applied Physics Letter

    Brane World Dynamics and Conformal Bulk Fields

    In the Randall-Sundrum scenario we investigate the dynamics of a spherically symmetric 3-brane world when matter fields are present in the bulk. To analyze the 5-dimensional Einstein equations we employ a global conformal transformation whose factor characterizes the Z2Z_2 symmetric warp. We find a new set of exact dynamical collapse solutions which localize gravity in the vicinity of the brane for a stress-energy tensor of conformal weight -4 and a warp factor that depends only on the coordinate of the fifth dimension. Geometries which describe the dynamics of inhomogeneous dust and generalized dark radiation on the brane are shown to belong to this set. The conditions for singular or globally regular behavior and the static marginally bound limits are discussed for these examples. Also explicitly demonstrated is complete consistency with the effective point of view of a 4-dimensional observer who is confined to the brane and makes the same assumptions about the bulk degrees of freedom.Comment: 26 pages, latex, no figures.     Dark Radiation Dynamics on the Brane

    We investigate the dynamics of a spherically symmetric vaccum on a Randall and Sundrum 3-brane world. Under certain natural conditions, the effective Einstein equations on the brane form a closed system for spherically symmetric dark radiation. We determine exact dynamical and inhomogeneous solutions, which are shown to depend on the brane cosmological constant, on the dark radiation tidal charge and on its initial energy configuration. We identify the conditions defining these solutions as singular or as globally regular. Finally, we discuss the confinement of gravity to the vicinity of the brane and show that a phase transition to a regime where gravity is not bound to the brane may occur at short distances during the collapse of positive dark energy density on a realistic de Sitter brane.Comment: 26 pages, LaTeX, 11 EPS figures.     Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in √s = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results

    Jet size dependence of single jet suppression in lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s(NN)) = 2.76 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC

    Measurements of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions at the LHC provide direct sensitivity to the physics of jet quenching. In a sample of lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s) = 2.76 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of approximately 7 inverse microbarns, ATLAS has measured jets with a calorimeter over the pseudorapidity interval |eta| < 2.1 and over the transverse momentum range 38 < pT < 210 GeV. Jets were reconstructed using the anti-kt algorithm with values for the distance parameter that determines the nominal jet radius of R = 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5. The centrality dependence of the jet yield is characterized by the jet "central-to-peripheral ratio," Rcp. Jet production is found to be suppressed by approximately a factor of two in the 10% most central collisions relative to peripheral collisions. Rcp varies smoothly with centrality as characterized by the number of participating nucleons. The observed suppression is only weakly dependent on jet radius and transverse momentum. These results provide the first direct measurement of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions and complement previous measurements of dijet transverse energy imbalance at the LHC.Comment: 15 pages plus author list (30 pages total), 8 figures, 2 tables, submitted to Physics Letters B.
