    Fundulus as the premier teleost model in environmental biology : opportunities for new insights using genomics

In this paper we summarize an extensive body of work examining the adaptive responses of Fundulus species to environmental conditions, and describe how this research has contributed importantly to our understanding of physiology, gene regulation, toxicology, and ecological and evolutionary genetics of teleosts and other vertebrates. These explorations have reached a critical juncture at which advancement is hindered by the lack of genomic resources for these species.     Local Authority planning provision for Event Management in Ireland: A Socio-Cultural Perspective

    The increasing popularity of the event sector in Ireland has resulted in many community events being developed and marketed to international and domestic tourists alike. This growth has had an effect on host communities in a positive and negative manner. This paper assesses the current levels of Local Authority socio-cultural planning provision and guidelines for event management in Ireland. To achieve this, a content analysis approach was used to illustrate which Local Authorities in the Republic of Ireland employed socio-cultural tools and indicators for event management. Accordingly, analysis revealed a lack of Local Authority socio-cultural planning guidelines or policies for event management. However, this offers and opportunity to be improved by implementing and applying best practice indicators in socio-cultural policies and guidelines for event management in Ireland

    Modulation by Vanadate of the Adrenergic Characteristics of the Iris, lleum, and Vas Deferens

    The influence of vanadate upon the adrenergic response of the rabbit iris (dilation) was examined in vivo, while the effects of vanadate upon adrenergic responses of the rabbit ileum and guinea pig vas deferens were investigated in vitro. Intravenously administered vanadate (2 mg/Kg) sensitized the iris to topically administered epinephrine; a small quantity of epinephrine, that elicited no change of pupil size following topical administration to the eye in the normal rabbit, produced a marked pupillary dilation in animals treated systemically with vanadate. The response of the isolated ileum to vanadate (1-10 ng) was identical to that elicited by norepinephrine or epinephrine. Brief exposure of the ileum to vanadate, norepinephrine, or epinephrine resulted in a transient cessation of rhythmic activity and reduction of mean tension. When the ileum was superfused continuously with solutions containing vanadate (10 Mg/ml; 5.4 X 10~5 M), the rhythmic activity and mean tension returned to control values within several minutes, suggesting tachyphylaxis. Exposure of the guinea pig vas deferens to vanadate did not elicit a contractile response. However, when the vas deferens was superfused continuously (>60 min) with vanadate (5.4 X 10~s M), both the amplitude and duration of the contraction elicited by epinephrine were increased. Consistant with the above findings is the hypothesis that vanadate might inhibit the mechanisms responsible for the removal of epinephrine or norepinephrine from the site of action within a tissue.     On the Origin of System III Asymmetries in the Io Torus

    The Io plasma torus exhibits several intriguing asymmetries which offer insights to the processes that transport mass and energy through the system. While these asymmetries are increasingly well described observationally, most still lack physical explanations. One important asymmetry is fixed in the coordinate system corotating with Jupiter's magnetic field. Space-based and ground-based observations have shown that torus ions are hotter and more highly ionized around System III 20 deg. Our simulations show that this type of torus asymmetry can be caused by enhanced pickup of fresh ions from Io's neutral clouds near these longitudes. The enhancement is caused primarily by the tilt and offset of the torus relative to the neutral clouds. We will report on the model parameters required to match the observed asymmetries, and offer predictions which will allow a test of this hypothesis
