This is a review of: Николай Онуфриевич Лосский, под редакцией В. П. Филатова, Москва: Росспэн (Серия "Философия России первой половины ХХ века"), 2016. It describes and appraises the content of this collection of nineteen articles on the life and thought of the prominent twentieth century Russian philosopher Nikolai Lossky. The volume, edited by Vladimir Filatov, presents the reader with an analysis of Lossky's philosophical legacy, including such aspects of his thought as his intuitivism, his personalism, his relation to phenomenology, his narrative of the history of Russian philosophy, and so on. Lossky is also compared to other Russian philosophers (Shpet, Frank) and his legacy in other countries (Poland, Slovakia) is examined. The authors are Piama Gaidenko, Frances Nethercott, Albert Novikov, Victor Molchanov, Vitaly Lechtzer, Tatiana Shchedrina, Irina Beshkareva, Anatoly Pushkarsky, Elena Serdyukova, Vasily Vanchugov, Irina Blauberg, Roman Granin, Varvara Popova, Evgeny Babosov, Teresa Obolevich, Zlatica Plašienková, Oleg Ermichin, Alexander Podoxenov, Alexander Opalev, and Vladimir Schultz

The legal framework for groundwater allocation in Quebec: towards integrated water management

This paper aims at providing a model of the legal framework for groundwater allocation in the province of Quebec (Canada), identifying its potential deficiencies and suggesting possible improvements. In Quebec, groundwater is a res communis. The right to use it is tied to real estate property. This right forms the basis of the legal framework for the management of groundwater quantity. However, according to statutory law, the actual use of groundwater also depends on governmental authorisations that limit quantities used. The main statutory instrument for managing the resource is the Groundwater Catchment Regulation (GWCR), which aims at conflict prevention between first users and new users by means of governmental authorisations. In agricultural areas, an additional authorisation regime indirectly prioritises agricultural groundwater uses. Finally, legal mechanisms addressing conflicts between water users rely on the general litigation framework provided by Quebec law without establishing an order of priority for the different uses of the resource. According to Integrated Water Resources Management, four aspects of the legal framework for groundwater quantity management can be modified to increase the efficiency of the allocation regime: 1) provisions should be made to preserve a residual environmental flow; 2) an order of priority should be established between the different uses to minimise conflict; 3) the scope of the regime should be extended to all groundwater users to increase its efficiency; 4) stakeholders should participate in the management of the resource

David Patterson, Anti-Semitism and Its Metaphysical Origins (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2015)

This is a critical review of David Patterson's book Anti-Semitism and Its Metaphysical Origins (2015). In this review, I present the author's new explanation of the roots of anti-Semitism, which he finds in the anti-Semite's desire to become like God himself. Patterson's explanation makes an anti-Semite of all those who partake in the "Western rationalist project," especially philosophers (including Jewish philosophers such as Spinoza, Hermann Cohen, and Marx), but also Islamists and anti-Zionist Jews. I criticize Patterson on two fronts: First, his "metaphysical" explanation relies on a petitio principii. Second, he should have argued his stance against that of Zeev Sternhell's thesis, according to which Western anti-Semitism is rooted, not in Western rationalism, but rather in the Western anti-rationalist (anti-Enlightenment) movement

Pragmatic Considerations in Mixed Music: a Case Study of La Rage

    Get PDF
With access to powerful real-time DSP languages now easier than ever, the new generation of mixed music composers are able to manage both sides of the coin: they have the programming skills and the compositional concerns that were traditionally the responsibility of two different persons. This brings more and more sophisticated integration of technical resources and compositional gestures. A good example of such integration is the author’s piece La Rage. In the light of general comments on the seamless integration of technology in this piece, the author, by discussing how compositional and technical concerns interact in his process of creation, tries to pinpoint key considerations that help him achieve this. He proposes two major categories, portability and adaptability, and explains how they were addressed in this specific work

The effect of population structure, plant size, herbivory and reproductive potential on effective population size in the temperate epiphytic orchid, Sarcochilus australis

Distribution of plant size and reproductive success is investigated in the temperate epiphytic orchid Sarcochilus australis (Lindl.) Rchb. f. at Kinglake National Park, Victoria, in south-eastern Australia, and applied to estimating the effective population size. Plant size distribution (leaf number, length of longest leaf and number of flowers) was not normally distributed. Most individuals were vegetative and it is estimated that more than half of all individuals are too small to flower, however exceptionally large individuals even though rare are able to have more than one active inflorescence. Flowering probability is plant size dependent and follows a sigmoid curve. The minimum observed leaf size of a flowering individual was 26 mm, however these small individuals have a low probability of flowering ( 80 mm) have a much higher probability of flowering (90%). The effective population size (Ne) of the Kinglake population of Sarcochilus australis was estimated from the distribution of flower production, and shown to be small (Ne = 10–19%) and comparatively similar to some of the other published estimates of effective populations size in orchids. From this basic survey of size distribution in Sarcochilus australis it is predicted that genetic diversity is low

Bicomplex quantum mechanics: I. The generalized Schr\"odinger equation

We introduce the set of bicomplex numbers T\mathbb{T} which is a commutative ring with zero divisors defined by T={w0+w1i1+w2i2+w3jw0,w1,w2,w3R}\mathbb{T}=\{w_0+w_1 \bold{i_1}+w_2\bold{i_2}+w_3 \bold{j}| w_0,w_1,w_2,w_3 \in \mathbb{R}\} where $\bold{i^{\text 2}_1}=-1, \bold{i^{\text 2}_2}=-1, \bold{j}^2=1,\ \bold{i_1}\bold{i_2}=\bold{j}=\bold{i_2}\bold{i_1}$. We present the conjugates and the moduli associated with the bicomplex numbers. Then we study the bicomplex Schr\"odinger equation and found the continuity equations. The discrete symmetries of the system of equations describing the bicomplex Schr\"odinger equation are obtained. Finally, we study the bicomplex Born formulas under the discrete symetries. We obtain the standard Born's formula for the class of bicomplex wave functions having a null hyperbolic angle

Bicomplex Quantum Mechanics: II. The Hilbert Space

    Using the bicomplex numbers T\mathbb{T} which is a commutative ring with zero divisors defined by T={w0+w1i1+w2i2+w3jw0,w1,w2,w3R}\mathbb{T}=\{w_0 + w_1 i_1 + w_2 i_2 + w_3 j | w_0, w_1, w_2, w_3 \in \mathbb{R}\} where i12=1,i22=1,j2=1,i1i2=j=i2i1i_{1}^{2} = -1, i_{2}^{2} = -1, j^2 = 1, i_1 i_2 = j = i_2 i_1, we construct hyperbolic and bicomplex Hilbert spaces. Linear functionals and dual spaces are considered and properties of linear operators are obtained; in particular it is established that the eigenvalues of a bicomplex self-adjoint operator are in the set of hyperbolic numbers.Comment: 25 pages, no figur
