    Spatial and Temporal Variations in Interstellar Absorption toward HD 72127AB

    New optical spectra of Ca II and Na I toward HD 72127AB provide additional evidence for both spatial and temporal variations in the complex interstellar absorption along the two sight lines; archival UV spectra yield information on the abundances, depletions, and physical conditions in the gas toward HD 72127A. Similarities in the strengths of various tracers of interstellar material in the two lines of sight suggest that the total hydrogen column densities [N(H) ~ 2.5 x 10^{20} cm^{-2}] and the depletions and ionization in the main components at low LSR velocities also are similar. Toward HD 72127A, the main components are relatively cool (T < 900 K), but with depletions resembling those found in warm, diffuse disc clouds; the generally weaker components at higher velocities have much milder depletions, more like those found in halo clouds. Several trace neutral species -- Ca I, Cr I, and Fe I -- are much stronger toward HD 72127B, however. The column density of Cr I, for example, is about 30 times the value determined toward zeta Oph (the only previous detection of that species in the ISM). Dielectronic recombination in warmer gas (T > 5000 K) may be largely responsible for the enhanced abundances of those trace neutral species toward HD 72127B. If the main components toward HD 72127AB are associated with material in the Vela SNR, the differences in abundances and physical conditions occur on scales of about 1100 AU.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, accepted to MNRA

    Trade patterns facilitating highly pathogenic avian influenza virus dissemination in the free-grazing layer duck system in Vietnam

    Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) viruses continue to threaten smallholder poultry producers in several South‐east Asian countries, including Vietnam. In particular, the free‐grazing duck system has been repeatedly highlighted as a major risk factor for HPAI outbreaks. Free‐grazing ducks, which scavenge on rice paddies after the harvest, account for a large proportion of the duck population in Vietnam and the wider South‐east Asian region. However, the structure and dynamics of the free‐grazing duck production from farm to consumption has not been described for Vietnam. In this study, we used a value chain approach to provide a complete picture of the actors involved in the production and marketing of free‐grazing duck eggs and spent layer ducks, as well as to investigate the governance structure of this food system. Group interviews and key informant interviews were conducted in two provinces located in the Mekong River Delta (MRD) and the Red River Delta (RRD). The results presented here highlight similarities and differences in farming and trade practices between the two provinces. The trade of spent layer ducks involved large volumes of live ducks being sent to China and Cambodia for consumption, generating a substantial risk of transboundary spread of pathogens, including HPAI viruses. We describe the major role of “duck yards”, which act as hubs in the northbound trade of spent layer ducks. These yards should be considered as essential links in the value chain of spent layer ducks when considering HPAI surveillance and control. The veterinary authorities are only marginally involved in the value chain activities, and their influence could be strengthened by increasing surveillance activities for instance in duck yards. Last, we discuss the dynamics of the duck value chain and further implications for future HPAI management policies

    Amperometric Nitrosothiol Sensor Using Immobilized Organoditelluride Species as Selective Catalytic Layer

    A new amperometric sensor capable of responding to various biological S -nitrosothiol species (RSNOs) is described. The sensor is prepared using an organoditelluride-tethered poly(allyamine hydrochloride) (PAH) polymer crosslinked within a dialysis membrane support mounted at the distal surface of an amperometric NO probe. The surface immobilized organoditelluride layer serves as a selective catalyst to decompose various RSNO species to NO in the presence of a thiol reducing agent added to the sample. The proposed sensor responds directly and reversibly to various low molecular weight (LMW) RSNOs in the range of 0.1 14ΜM to 10 14ΜM with nearly equal sensitivity. The main advantage of this sensor over previously reported Cu(II/I) and organodiselenium-based RSNO sensors is its long operational life-time (at least one month). A discussion regarding solution phase transnitrosation reactions potentially allowing the measurement of higher molecular weight S -nitrosoproteins is provided, along with data showing preliminary results in this direction.     Benchmark calculation for tunnelling through a multidimensional asymmetric double well potential

    A benchmark calculation is presented for the quantum dynamics of tunnelling through a multidimensional asymmetric double well potential. A model Hamiltonian is used with a 1-dimensional tunnelling mode coupled to an (M − 1)-dimensional harmonic bath, a system-bath problem. The benchmark calculation uses a basis set expansion of the wavefunction, with separate basis functions for the system and bath. Indistinguishability of configurations is exploited to greatly reduce the expense of the calculation, and a fully converged result is achieved. Comparison is offered to existing quantum dynamical methods that have tested this model problem, and further benchmark results not previously studied are presented

    Finite Temperature Properties of Quantum Antiferromagnets in a Uniform Magnetic Field in One and Two Dimensions

    Consider a dd-dimensional antiferromagnet with a quantum disordered ground state and a gap to bosonic excitations with non-zero spin. In a finite external magnetic field, this antiferromagnet will undergo a phase transition to a ground state with non-zero magnetization, describable as the condensation of a dilute gas of bosons. The finite temperature properties of the Bose gas in the vicinity of this transition are argued to obey a hypothesis of ZERO SCALE-FACTOR UNIVERSALITY for d<2d < 2, with logarithmic violations in d=2d=2.     On the knee in the energy spectrum of cosmic rays

    The knee in the all-particle energy spectrum is scrutinized with a phenomenological model, named poly-gonato model, linking results from direct and indirect measurements. For this purpose, recent results from direct and indirect measurements of cosmic rays in the energy range from 10 GeV up to 1 EeV are examined. The energy spectra of individual elements, as obtained by direct observations, are extrapolated to high energies using power laws and compared to all-particle spectra from air shower measurements. A cut-off for each element proportional to its charge Z is assumed. The model describes the knee in the all-particle energy spectrum as a result of subsequent cut-offs for individual elements, starting with the proton component at 4.5 PeV, and the second change of the spectral index around 0.4 EeV as due to the end of stable elements (Z=92). The mass composition, extrapolated from direct measurements to high energies, using the poly-gonato model, is compatible with results from air shower experiments measuring the electromagnetic, muonic, and hadronic components. But it disagrees with the mass composition derived from X_max measurements using Cerenkov and fluorescence light detectors.Comment: 30 pages, 21 figures, 9 tables, accepted by Astroparticle Physic

    A chemical understanding for the enhanced hydrogen tunnelling in hydroperoxidation of linoleic acid catalysed by soybean lipoxygenase-1

    The reaction path of the Interacting-State Model (ISM) is used with the Transition-State Theory (TST) and the semiclassical correction for tunnelling (ISM/scTST) to calculate the rates of H-atom abstraction from C(11) of linoleic acid catalysed by soybean lipoxygenase-1 (SLO), as well as of an analogous uncatalysed reaction in solution. The calculated hydrogen-atom transfer rates, their temperature dependency and kinetic isotope effect (KIE) are in good agreement with the experimental data. ISM/scTST calculations reveal the hypersensitivity of the rate to protein dynamics when the hydrogen bonding to a carbon atom is present in the reaction coordinate

    The klotho gene was originally identified as a putative age-suppressing gene in mice that extends life span when overexpressed. It induces complex phenotypes resembling human premature aging syndromes when disrupted. The gene was named after a Greek goddess Klotho who spun the thread of life. Since then, various functional aspects of the klotho gene have been investigated, leading to the identification of multiple novel endocrine axes that regulate various metabolic processes and an unexpected link between mineral metabolism and aging. The purposes of this review were to overview recent progress on Klotho research and to discuss a novel aging mechanism
