Statistical properties of inelastic Lorentz gas

The inelastic Lorentz gas in cooling states is studied. It is found that the inelastic Lorentz gas is localized and that the mean square displacement of the inelastic Lorentz gas obeys a power of a logarithmic function of time. It is also found that the scaled position distribution of the inelastic Lorentz gas has an exponential tail, while the distribution is close to the Gaussian near the peak. Using a random walk model, we derive an analytical expression of the mean square displacement as a function of time and the restitution coefficient, which well agrees with the data of our simulation. Children’s access to beneficial information in Arab states: Implementation of Article 17 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child in Egypt, Morocco and the United Arab Emirates

In theory, the multiple platforms and transnational nature of digital media, along with a related proliferation of diverse forms of content, make it easier for children’s right to access socially and culturally beneficial information and material to be realised, as required by Article 17 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). Drawing on data collected during research on children’s screen content in the Arab world, combined with scrutiny of documents collated by the Committee on the Rights of the Child, which monitors compliance with the CRC, this paper explores how three Arab countries, Egypt, Morocco and the United Arab Emirates, presented their efforts to implement Article 17 as part of their periodic reporting on their overall performance in putting the CRC into effect. It uncovers tensions over the relationship between provision, participation and protection in relation to media, reveals that Article 17 is liable to get less attention than it deserves in contexts where governments keep a tight grip on media, and that, by appearing to give it a lower priority, all parties neglect the intersection between human rights in relation to media and children’s rights

Brokering innovation to better leverage R&D investment

What is the contribution of innovation brokers in leveraging research and development (R&D) investment to enhance industry-wide capabilities? The case of the Australian Cooperative Research Centre for Construction Innovation (CRC CI) is considered in the context of motivating supply chain firms to improve their organizational capabilities in order to acquire, assimilate, transfer and exploit R&D outcomes to their advantage, and to create broader industry and national benefits. A previous audit and analysis has shown an increase in business R&D investment since 2001. The role of the CRC CI in contributing to growth in the absorptive capacity of the Australian construction industry as a whole is illustrated through two programmes: digital modelling/building information modelling (BIM) and construction site safety. Let’s practice: Shaping crisis management of preservice counseling professionals

Counselors frequently encounter crises in practice with various factors shaping crisis management. However, limited preparation and training combined with personal and situational characteristics affect a counselors’ ability to properly handle a crisis. The purpose of the present study was to identify factors that could potentially affect the ability to handle a crisis in session among counselors-in-training and add to the understanding of self-efficacy in crisis counseling. The study consisted of participants enrolled in a practicum pre-service course in a CACREP accredited program. Results were analyzed through a narrative research approach, specifically a categorical-content narrative analysis, theory-driven thematic analysis and cross-case analysis was used to compare and contrast each point to identify common themes. Four predefined source of self-efficacy themes identified were performance experience, vicarious performances, verbal persuasion, and imaginal performance as well as three themes derived from narrative analysis: crisis management, practice self-care, and personal characteristics. Findings indicated participants’ exposure to a crisis in a counseling session demonstrated increases in perceived ability to effectively manage and work with a client experiencing a crisis. Participants, who attended to a real or fictional crisis, expressed a positive impact on their crisis counseling self-efficacy. Implications for counselor education and practitioners are discussed

Epigenetic and Drug Response Modulation of Epigalocaten-In-3-Gallate in Staphylococcus aureus with Divergent Resistance Phenotypes

Healthcare-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections represent extremely high morbidity and mortality rates worldwide. We aimed to assess the antimicrobial potential and synergistic effect between Epigalocatenin-3-gallate (EGCG) and different antibiotics in S. aureus strains with divergent resistance phenotypes. EGCG exposure effects in epigenetic and drug resistance key modulators were also evaluated. S. aureus strains (n = 32) were isolated from infected patients in a Lisbon hospital. The identification of the S. aureus resistance phenotype was performed through automatized methods. The antibiotic synergistic assay was performed through disk diffusion according to EUCAST guidelines with co-exposure to EGCG (250, 100, 50 and 25 µg/mL). The bacteria's molecular profile was assessed through FTIR spectroscopy. The transcriptional expression of OrfX, SpdC and WalKR was performed by using qRT-PCR. FTIR-spectroscopy analysis enabled the clear discrimination of MRSA/MSSA strains and the EGCG exposure effect in the bacteria's molecular profiles. Divergent resistant phenotypes were associated with divergent transcriptional expression of the epigenetic modulator OrfX, particularly in MRSA strains, as well as the key drug response modulators SpdC and WalKR. These results clearly demonstrate that EGCG exposure alters the expression patterns of key epigenetic and drug response genes with associated divergent-resistant profiles, which supports its potential for antimicrobial treatment and/or therapeutic adjuvant against antibiotic-resistant microorganisms.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Early Recollections: An Adlerian technique with older people

Abstract: Research on the success of life review therapy with older persons has been equivocal. This article suggests a related but less time consuming and possibly more productive alternative for facilitating ego integrity in late maturity. The Adlerian concept of Early Recollections is discussed in detail, with concrete suggestions for therapy and examples provided. Merriam and Cross (1982, p. 39) noted that "reminiscence, or recalling the past, is a behavior common to all ages." It is viewed as particularly important for older persons as they attempt the universal process of achieving ego integrity Article: Though the need for some type of reminiscing experience is well documented, the nature of this experience also remains unclear. Life review needs better definition of process, methods and caregiver qualifications. An alternative method to assist older persons in achieving ego integrity, as well as to help them live more satisfying and effective lives on a daily basis, is described in the following sections. Based on Adlerian theory, the technique of using Early Recollections provides an opportunity for structured reminiscence and offers several advantages over the traditional life review therapy. The TP53 colorectal cancer international collaborative study on the prognostic and predictive significance of p53 mutation: influence of tumor site, type of mutation, and adjuvant treatment

PURPOSE: The aims of the TP53 Colorectal Cancer (CRC) International Collaborative Study were to evaluate the possible associations between specific TP53 mutations and tumor site, and to evaluate the prognostic and predictive significance of these mutations in different site, stage, and treatment subgroups. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 3,583 CRC patients from 25 different research groups in 17 countries were recruited to the study. Patients were divided into three groups according to site of the primary tumor. TP53 mutational analyses spanned exons 4 to 8. RESULTS: TP53 mutations were found in 34% of the proximal colon tumors and in 45% of the distal colon and rectal tumors. They were associated with lymphatic invasion in proximal tumors. In distal colon tumors, deletions causing loss of amino acids were associated with worse survival. In proximal colon tumors, mutations in exon 5 showed a trend toward statistical significance (P < .05) when overall survival was considered. Dukes' C tumors with wild-type TP53 and those with mutated TP53 (proximal tumors) showed significantly better prognosis when treated with adjuvant chemotherapy. CONCLUSION: Analysis of TP53 mutations from a large cohort of CRC patients has identified tumor site, type of mutation, and adjuvant treatment as important factors in determining the prognostic significance of this genetic alteration
