    Universal arrays

    A word on qq symbols is a sequence of letters from a fixed alphabet of size qq. For an integer k1k\ge 1, we say that a word ww is kk-universal if, given an arbitrary word of length kk, one can obtain it by removing entries from ww. It is easily seen that the minimum length of a kk-universal word on qq symbols is exactly qkqk. We prove that almost every word of size (1+o(1))cqk(1+o(1))c_qk is kk-universal with high probability, where cqc_q is an explicit constant whose value is roughly qlogqq\log q. Moreover, we show that the kk-universality property for uniformly chosen words exhibits a sharp threshold. Finally, by extending techniques of Alon [Geometric and Functional Analysis 27 (2017), no. 1, 1--32], we give asymptotically tight bounds for every higher dimensional analogue of this problem.Comment: 12 page

    141 p.El proyecto consistió en el estudio del estado actual del sector silvoagropecuario de la comuna de San Clemente, para posteriormente sistematizar y dar orden a Ios datos y a las variables criticas que contribuyen al desarrollo del sector. Las variables consideradas relevantes en el potenciamiento del área en cuestión, fueron obtenidas en base a dos fuentes; Ia primera consistió en un exhaustivo análisis bibliográfico y la revisión de estudios similares en otros países en desarrollo. Como segunda fuente, se consultó la opinión de expertos en cada área (agrícola, pecuaria y silvícola), a través del método Delphi. De ello se pudo deducir finalmente, los factores que tienen mayor influencia en el desarrollo, para luego diseñar e implementar un sistema de información a nivel comunal que permite analizar, evaluar, reunir y actualizar la información productiva y de infraestructura silvoagropecuaria, para apoyar el plan de desarrollo comunal, permitiendo Ia estructuración de las tareas del municipio y la detección de carencias y potencialidades existentes en el sector, de tal manera de focalizar la inversión publica y orientar la inversión privada ya sea cuando se dan las condiciones necesarias o bien a partir de lo ya existente, se generan nuevas oportunidades

    O6-methylguanine-DNA-methyltransferase immunostaining intensity in glioblastoma

    Immunohistochemistry (IHC) for O6-methylguanine-DNA-methyltransferase (MGMT) has shown heterogeneous results. Cell staining intensity has not been included as a quantifiable variable in IHC analyses. We performed MGMT IHC in 29 patients diagnosed as glioblastoma classifying cells into three categories based on nuclear staining intensity compared with adjacent endothelium. The median proportions of strong-moderate, weak and no staining cells were 10%, 16% and 71%, respectively. The proportion of positive cases for MGMT expression varies from 38% to 52% depending on the classification of weakly stained cells. This letter challenges previous studies that have not included intensity as a variable for IHC analysis

    User-centric approaches in access services evaluation : profiling the end user

    This article presents best practices for the design of a user-centric approach in accessibility research projects, taking two European projects as an example: ImAc (Immersive Accessibility) and EasyTV (Easing the access of Europeans with disabilities to converging media and content). Both H2020 projects aim to investigate access services such as audio description, audio subtitling, subtitling/captioning or sign language interpreting in media content. The paper explains the many and varied documentation required to comply with existing ethical issues in Europe. Designing alternative means of obtaining information will be explained, since interaction with participants had to cater for the needs of diverse users. The second part of the article presents an overview of user profiling in previous accessibility projects in the field of media accessibility, and shows good practices based on the two ongoing projects. Finally, the article presents an example of how users have been defined and how they have been involved in the initial stages of both ImAc and EasyTV, by summarizing the methodology developed for a series of focus groups with end users.     Investigating potential planetary nebula/cluster pairs

    Publisher's Version/PDFContext. Fundamental parameters characterizing the end-state of intermediate-mass stars may be constrained by discovering planetary nebulae (PNe) in open clusters (OCs). Cluster membership may be exploited to establish the distance, luminosity, age, and physical size for PNe, and the intrinsic luminosity and mass of its central star. Aims. Four potential PN-OC associations were investigated to assess the cluster membership for the PNe. Methods. Radial velocities were measured from intermediate-resolution optical spectra, complemented with previous estimates in the literature.When the radial velocity study supported the PN/OC association, we analyzed whether other parameters (e.g., age, distance, reddening, central star brightness) were consistent with this conclusion. Results. Our measurements imply that the PNe VBe 3 and HeFa 1 are not members of the OCs NGC5999 and NGC6067, respectively, and that they very likely belong to the background bulge population. Conversely, consistent radial velocities indicate that NGC2452/NGC 2453 could be associated, but our results are not conclusive so additional observations are warranted. Finally, we demonstrate that all the available information point to He 2-86 being a young, highly internally obscured PN member of NGC4463. New near-infrared photometry acquired via the Vista Variables in the Via Lactea ESO public survey was used in tandem with existing UBV photometry to measure the distance, reddening, and age of NGC4463, finding d = 1.55 ± 0.10 kpc, E(B − V) = 0.41 ± 0.02, and τ = 65 ± 10 Myr, respectively.     A Better Touch: C-tactile Fibers Related Activity is Associated to Pain Reduction During Temporal Summation of Second Pain

    C-tactile (CT) fibers, responsible for the so-called “affective” touch (AT), have drawn a fair amount of attention within the scientific community for their marked social dimension. However, while the pain-relieving potential of discriminative touch (DT) has been documented, proofs of the analgesic properties of AT are still scarce. Additionally, no study has so far tested its possible pain-relieving effect on a clinically-relevant model. Temporal summation of second pain (TSSP), otherwise referred to as “wind-up,” relies on repetitive stimulation of C-nociceptors and it is thought to reflect central sensitization, a process linked to many chronic pain conditions. In the present experimental, within participants, design we induced TSSP through trains of ascending and descending repetitive heat stimulation. Forty-two healthy participants’ pain was measured during 2 different tactile stimulations (stroking velocities AT: 10 cm/s; DT: 0.3 cm/s) or without concomitant tactile input. Since measures of pleasantness of the tactile stimulation have been found to strongly correlate with C-tactile fibers’ firing rate, these, together with participants’ body awareness, were also taken into account. Our results show that AT brought about a decrease of our participants’ pain as opposed to both DT and no touch, while DT did not produce any significant pain reduction. Thus, only AT successfully modulated wind-up. As expected, AT was perceived as more pleasant than DT, while a clear relationship between body awareness and pain was found only during DT. Targeting CT fibers could pave the way to new treatments for chronic pain conditions whose aetiology depend on abnormal C-nociceptors’ physiology. Perspective: This study extends previous findings on the analgesic potential of affective touch, documenting a clear pain reduction during temporal summation of second pain (TSSP). Since TSSP is thought to reflect central sensitization, the psychophysiological mechanisms of affective touch could be exploited for new chronic pain treatments

    Role of age and comorbidities in mortality of patients with infective endocarditis

    [Purpose]: The aim of this study was to analyse the characteristics of patients with IE in three groups of age and to assess the ability of age and the Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) to predict mortality. [Methods]: Prospective cohort study of all patients with IE included in the GAMES Spanish database between 2008 and 2015.Patients were stratified into three age groups:<65 years,65 to 80 years,and ≥ 80 years.The area under the receiver-operating characteristic (AUROC) curve was calculated to quantify the diagnostic accuracy of the CCI to predict mortality risk. [Results]: A total of 3120 patients with IE (1327 < 65 years;1291 65-80 years;502 ≥ 80 years) were enrolled.Fever and heart failure were the most common presentations of IE, with no differences among age groups.Patients ≥80 years who underwent surgery were significantly lower compared with other age groups (14.3%,65 years; 20.5%,65-79 years; 31.3%,≥80 years). In-hospital mortality was lower in the <65-year group (20.3%,<65 years;30.1%,65-79 years;34.7%,≥80 years;p < 0.001) as well as 1-year mortality (3.2%, <65 years; 5.5%, 65-80 years;7.6%,≥80 years; p = 0.003).Independent predictors of mortality were age ≥ 80 years (hazard ratio [HR]:2.78;95% confidence interval [CI]:2.32–3.34), CCI ≥ 3 (HR:1.62; 95% CI:1.39–1.88),and non-performed surgery (HR:1.64;95% CI:11.16–1.58).When the three age groups were compared,the AUROC curve for CCI was significantly larger for patients aged <65 years(p < 0.001) for both in-hospital and 1-year mortality. [Conclusion]: There were no differences in the clinical presentation of IE between the groups. Age ≥ 80 years, high comorbidity (measured by CCI),and non-performance of surgery were independent predictors of mortality in patients with IE.CCI could help to identify those patients with IE and surgical indication who present a lower risk of in-hospital and 1-year mortality after surgery, especially in the <65-year group

    The FLUXNET2015 dataset provides ecosystem-scale data on CO2, water, and energy exchange between the biosphere and the atmosphere, and other meteorological and biological measurements, from 212 sites around the globe (over 1500 site-years, up to and including year 2014). These sites, independently managed and operated, voluntarily contributed their data to create global datasets. Data were quality controlled and processed using uniform methods, to improve consistency and intercomparability across sites. The dataset is already being used in a number of applications, including ecophysiology studies, remote sensing studies, and development of ecosystem and Earth system models. FLUXNET2015 includes derived-data products, such as gap-filled time series, ecosystem respiration and photosynthetic uptake estimates, estimation of uncertainties, and metadata about the measurements, presented for the first time in this paper. In addition, 206 of these sites are for the first time distributed under a Creative Commons (CC-BY 4.0) license. This paper details this enhanced dataset and the processing methods, now made available as open-source codes, making the dataset more accessible, transparent, and reproducible.Peer reviewe
