    Patterns and correlates of claims for brown bear damage on a continental scale

    Wildlife damage to human property threatens human-wildlife coexistence. Conflicts arising from wildlife damage in intensively managed landscapes often undermine conservation efforts, making damage mitigation and compensation of special concern for wildlife conservation. However, the mechanisms underlying the occurrence of damage and claims at large scales are still poorly understood. Here, we investigated the patterns of damage caused by brown bears Ursus arctos and its ecological and socio-economic correlates at a continental scale. We compiled information about compensation schemes across 26 countries in Europe in 2005-2012 and analysed the variation in the number of compensated claims in relation to (i) bear abundance, (ii) forest availability, (iii) human land use, (iv) management practices and (v) indicators of economic wealth. Most European countries have a posteriori compensation schemes based on damage verification, which, in many cases, have operated for more than 30 years. On average, over 3200 claims of bear damage were compensated annually in Europe. The majority of claims were for damage to livestock (59%), distributed throughout the bear range, followed by damage to apiaries (21%) and agriculture (17%), mainly in Mediterranean and eastern European countries. The mean number of compensated claims per bear and year ranged from 0·1 in Estonia to 8·5 in Norway. This variation was not only due to the differences in compensation schemes; damage claims were less numerous in areas with supplementary feeding and with a high proportion of agricultural land. However, observed variation in compensated damage was not related to bear abundance. Synthesis and applications. Compensation schemes, management practices and human land use influence the number of claims for brown bear damage, while bear abundance does not. Policies that ignore this complexity and focus on a single factor, such as bear population size, may not be effective in reducing claims. To be effective, policies should be based on integrative schemes that prioritize damage prevention and make it a condition of payment of compensation that preventive measures are applied. Such integrative schemes should focus mitigation efforts in areas or populations where damage claims are more likely to occur. Similar studies using different species and continents might further improve our understanding of conflicts arising from wildlife damage

    Production of He-4 and (4) in Pb-Pb collisions at root(NN)-N-S=2.76 TeV at the LHC

    Results on the production of He-4 and (4) nuclei in Pb-Pb collisions at root(NN)-N-S = 2.76 TeV in the rapidity range vertical bar y vertical bar <1, using the ALICE detector, are presented in this paper. The rapidity densities corresponding to 0-10% central events are found to be dN/dy4(He) = (0.8 +/- 0.4 (stat) +/- 0.3 (syst)) x 10(-6) and dN/dy4 = (1.1 +/- 0.4 (stat) +/- 0.2 (syst)) x 10(-6), respectively. This is in agreement with the statistical thermal model expectation assuming the same chemical freeze-out temperature (T-chem = 156 MeV) as for light hadrons. The measured ratio of (4)/He-4 is 1.4 +/- 0.8 (stat) +/- 0.5 (syst). (C) 2018 Published by Elsevier B.V.Peer reviewe

    Large carnivore damage in Europe

    The mitigation of conflicts associated with large carnivore damage to livestock and agriculture is pivotal to their conservation. We evaluate current programs to compensate and prevent large carnivore damage in 27 European countries and the factors related to the economic costs of these programs. Overall, high compensation costs are associated with free-ranging livestock (68% of total costs) and with national economic wealth. Contrary to general belief, the return of large carnivores does not always translate into higher compensation costs. We identify a tendency towards prioritizing compensation over preventiononly a few wealthy countries pay the majority of the money allocated for prevention programs to adapt husbandry practices to the presence of large carnivores. We conclude that programs mainly focused on paying large compensation amounts will often fail to build tolerance towards predators. To mitigate conflicts and optimize the cost-effectiveness of publicly funded measures, responsible agencies should be proactive, focus on prevention-based policies and periodically evaluate the effectiveness of compensation and prevention programs in an adaptive manner. With this purpose and to identify further solutions for conflict mitigation, we call for a pan-European database of damage occurrence, management actions and associated costs

    Wildlife restoration needs more effort to mitigate conservation conflicts: the case of large carnivore damages in Europe

    After centuries of decline, numbers and ranges of large carnivores have recently increased in Europe, due to the recovery of habitats and prey populations and an increased support for conservation efforts (1). A key issue for the conservation of large carnivores is managing the conflicts arising from damage to human property, such as livestock depredation. This is a sensitive problem where wildlife species return after decades of absence and particularly sensitive when the return is made by humans; e.g., reintroductions. The mitigation of these conflicts is commonly addressed with compensation schemes, assuming that reimbursing farmers for economic losses will increase the tolerance towards the species involved (2). Our study synthesizes information on compensation costs from 33 populations of four large carnivore species in Europe. Compensation and prevention costs tend to be higher in countries that are wealthy, lack a recent history of coexistence with large carnivores and show a low level of tolerance towards them. We estimate that almost 30 million Euros are paid annually for compensation of large carnivore damage in Europe, of which approximately two-thirds is paid in countries where the range of large carnivores has at least quadrupled in the last decades. In the case of brown bear (Ursus arctos), preventive cost double the amount spent on compensation (5 vs. 2.4 million Euros per year, respectively), being the majority of preventive measures subsidized in reintroduced populations and in Norway (where bear's range has ten-fold increased in the last ca. 60 years). Half of the subsidized measures classified as prevention are not invested in protecting livestock and agriculture. They rather seem to assist in the change in husbandry practices required before implementing effective measures to prevent damage (e.g., dog fodder or veterinary assistance) or they are related in fact to damage verification (e.g., training dogs to find sheep carcasses).  We discuss that to effectively mitigate conflicts in the long term, damage management policies should focus on the quality of preventive measures rather than on the quantity; should be adaptative and flexible; and should fit for purpose. To achieve these goals we recommend to managers and policymakers to evaluate the achievements of compensation and prevention programs periodically and we call for a pan-European database of damage occurrence, management actions and associated costs.     Redefining fatty liver disease: an international patient perspective.

    Despite its increased recognition as a major health threat, fatty liver disease associated with metabolic dysfunction remains largely underdiagnosed and undertreated. An international consensus panel has called for the disease to be renamed from non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) to metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) and has suggested how the disease should be diagnosed. This Viewpoint explores the call from the perspective of patient advocacy groups. Patients are well aware of the negative consequences of the NAFLD acronym. This advocacy group enthusiastically endorses the call to reframe the disease, which we believe will ultimately have a positive effect on patient care and quality of life and, through this effect, will reduce the burden on health-care systems. For patients, policy makers, health planners, donors, and non-hepatologists, the new acronym MAFLD is clear, squarely placing the disease as a manifestation of metabolic dysfunction and improving understanding at a public health and patient level. The authors from representative patient groups are supportive of this change, particularly as the new acronym is meaningful to all citizens as well as governments and policy makers, and, above all, is devoid of any stigma
