    A Newly Designed Baggage Transfer System Implemented Using Event-Based Simulations

    This paper proposes a newly designed system for baggage transfer, which utilises the Nexus Metro system in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne by running a pendulum freight train system between the Haymarket and Newcastle Airport to carry travellers’ baggage. This system is capable of serving all passengers departing from Newcastle Airport in a day, with a capacity of 9750 bags across 26 freight train journeys. Following the initial solution two more solutions were designed with the aims of maximising the utilisation of the metro tracks by saturating the system with freight trains on a 24 hour system. All solutions have been replicated using models designed and validated by event based simulation using SIMUL8, a simulation modelling software package

    3D LiDAR Based SLAM System Evaluation with Low-Cost Real-Time Kinematics GPS Solution

    Positioning mobile systems with high accuracy is a prerequisite for intelligent autonomous behavior, both in industrial environments and in field robotics. This paper describes the setup of a robotic platform and its use for the evaluation of simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) algorithms. A configuration using a mobile robot Husky A200, and a LiDAR (light detection and ranging) sensor was used to implement the setup. For verification of the proposed setup, different scan matching methods for odometry determination in indoor and outdoor environments are tested. An assessment of the accuracy of the baseline 3D-SLAM system and the selected evaluation system is presented by comparing different scenarios and test situations. It was shown that the hdl_graph_slam in combination with the LiDAR OS1 and the scan matching algorithms FAST_GICP and FAST_VGICP achieves good mapping results with accuracies up to 2 cm

    Analysis of customer services in Rail passenger stations using a Holistic method - application to Newcastle central station

    In this paper, we look at the level of customer satisfaction as well as customer services in a passenger railway station. Specifically the objective of this paper is to develop and employ a simple method for analyzing the customer satisfaction in railway stations to help us identify ways for improving both the customer service and the station design. The method developed is applied for the purposes of Newcastle Central rail station. After having studied different approaches we used a survey to collect the necessary data for analysis. A comparison of the opinions of different categories of rail station users has been undertaken. As a result different areas for improvement have been identified. This paper can be seen as a starting point for further research on a detailed customer satisfaction analysis for Newcastle Central

    Performance of the CMS Cathode Strip Chambers with Cosmic Rays

    The Cathode Strip Chambers (CSCs) constitute the primary muon tracking device in the CMS endcaps. Their performance has been evaluated using data taken during a cosmic ray run in fall 2008. Measured noise levels are low, with the number of noisy channels well below 1%. Coordinate resolution was measured for all types of chambers, and fall in the range 47 microns to 243 microns. The efficiencies for local charged track triggers, for hit and for segments reconstruction were measured, and are above 99%. The timing resolution per layer is approximately 5 ns

    Performance and Operation of the CMS Electromagnetic Calorimeter

    The operation and general performance of the CMS electromagnetic calorimeter using cosmic-ray muons are described. These muons were recorded after the closure of the CMS detector in late 2008. The calorimeter is made of lead tungstate crystals and the overall status of the 75848 channels corresponding to the barrel and endcap detectors is reported. The stability of crucial operational parameters, such as high voltage, temperature and electronic noise, is summarised and the performance of the light monitoring system is presented
