Light Assisted Collisional Loss in a Rb Ultracold Optical Trap
We have studied hetero- and homonuclear excited state/ground state collisions
by loading both Rb and Rb into a far off resonant trap (FORT).
Because of the relatively weak confinement of the FORT, we expect the hyperfine
structure of the different isotopes to play a crucial role in the collision
rates. This dependence on hyperfine structure allows us to measure collisions
associated with long range interatomic potentials of different structure: such
as long and short ranged; or such as purely attractive, purely repulsive, or
mixed attractive and repulsive. We observe significantly different loss rates
for different excited state potentials. Additionally, we observe that some
collisional channels' loss rates are saturated at our operating intensities
(~15 mW/cm). These losses are important limitations in loading dual

Identification of a C/G polymorphism in the promoter region of the BRCA1 gene and its use as a marker for rapid detection of promoter deletions
Reduced expression of BRCA1 has been implicated in sporadic breast cancer, although the mechanisms underlying this phenomenon remain unclear. To determine whether regulatory mutations could account for the reduced expression, we screened the promoter region by sequencing in 20 patients with sporadic disease. No mutations were detected; however, a new polymorphism consisting of a C-to-G base change within the ÎČ-promoter was identified, with the frequency of the G allele being 0.34. Close to complete linkage disequilibrium was found between this marker and the Pro871Leu polymorphism, situated in exon 11, which has previously been shown not to be associated with breast or ovarian cancer. This indicates that the C/G polymorphism is also unlikely to play a role in either disease. However, the strength of linkage disequilibrium between these markers permitted their use for rapid screening for genomic deletions within BRCA1. A series of 214 cases with familial breast cancer were analysed using this approach; 88/214 were heterozygous for the promoter polymorphism, thereby excluding a deletion in this region. Among the remaining patients, one hemizygous case reflecting a promoter deletion was successfully identified. Therefore, this study indicates that deletions within the ÎČ-promoter region of BRCA1 are an uncommon event in familial breast cancer. Furthermore, it suggests that mutations within the BRCA1 promoter are unlikely to account for the reported decreased expression of BRCA1 in sporadic disease. 1999 Cancer Research Campaig
Symptoms of depersonalisation/derealisation disorder as measured by brain electrical activity: A systematic review
Depersonalisation/derealisation disorder (DPD) refers to frequent and persistent detachment from bodily self and disengagement from the outside world. As a dissociative disorder, DPD affects 1â2 % of the population, but takes 7â12 years on average to be accurately diagnosed. In this systematic review, we comprehensively describe research targeting the neural correlates of core DPD symptoms, covering publications between 1992 and 2020 that have used electrophysiological techniques. The aim was to investigate the diagnostic potential of these relatively inexpensive and convenient neuroimaging tools. We review the EEG power spectrum, components of the event-related potential (ERP), as well as vestibular and heartbeat evoked potentials as likely electrophysiological biomarkers to study DPD symptoms. We argue that acute anxiety- or trauma-related impairments in the integration of interoceptive and exteroceptive signals play a key role in the formation of DPD symptoms, and that future research needs analysis methods that can take this integration into account. We suggest tools for prospective studies of electrophysiological DPD biomarkers, which are urgently needed to fully develop their diagnostic potential
High-accuracy emulators for observables in ÎCDM, Neff, ÎŁmÎœ, and w cosmologies
We use the emulation framework CosmoPower to construct and publicly release neural network emulators of cosmological observables, including the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature and polarization power spectra, matter power spectrum, distance-redshift relation, baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) and redshift-space distortion (RSD) observables, and derived parameters. We train our emulators on EinsteinâBoltzmann calculations obtained with high-precision numerical convergence settings, for a wide range of cosmological models including ÎCDM, wCDM, ÎCDM + Neff, and ÎCDM + ÎŁmÎœ. Our CMB emulators are accurate to better than 0.5 perâcent out to â = 104, which is sufficient for Stage-IV data analysis, and our P(k) emulators reach the same accuracy level out to
â , which is sufficient for Stage-III data analysis. We release the emulators via an online repository (CosmoPower Organisation), which will be continually updated with additional extended cosmological models. Our emulators accelerate cosmological data analysis by orders of magnitude, enabling cosmological parameter extraction analyses, using current survey data, to be performed on a laptop. We validate our emulators by comparing them to class and camb and by reproducing cosmological parameter constraints derived from Planck TT, TE, EE, and CMB lensing data, as well as from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope Data Release 4 CMB data, Dark Energy Survey Year-1 galaxy lensing and clustering data, and Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey Data Release 12 BAO and RSD data
