    Effective Community-Based Strategies for Preventing Foreclosures

    Creating homeownership is a central strategy of community developers, but the success that they have realized is threatened by a recent rise in the rate of mortgage foreclosures. Innovations in the mortgage industry, particularly automated underwriting, risk-based pricing and stratified securitization, have helped foster the development of mortgage products that are flexible and affordable, expanding homeownership opportunities to many households with poorer credit ratings and fewer savings for down payment. But these riskier "subprime" loans, often made with larger up-front fees and higher interest rates, are foreclosed upon at a much higher rate than are prime loans. Subprime lending has also been concentrated in low-income and high-minority areas, often the very places community developers are trying to revitalize.Community-based development organizations across the country have responded to the increase in foreclosures by providing counseling and loans and by working with local lenders to minimize the number of delinquent mortgages that go into foreclosure. Foreclosure-prevention programs are resource-intensive, however, and community organizations in locations with high foreclosure rates can be quickly overwhelmed by requests for assistance. Nevertheless, many affiliates of the NeighborWorks network have created successful programs. These programs have staff with a wide variety of experience, as they must negotiate with the lender and servicer staff, and also provide counseling and support to the homeowner. Counseling may be needed to cover a variety of topics, including financial education, household budgeting, job skills or family problems, and often requires partnering with other organizations. A number of the foreclosure-prevention programs also provide, or have access to, loans and grants to help homeowners restructure their debt and become current on their mortgages

    Cerebral microinfarcts: the invisible lesions

    The association between small but still visible lacunar infarcts and cognitive decline has been established by multiple population-based radiological and pathological studies. Microscopic examination of brain sections reveals even smaller but substantially more numerous microinfarcts, the focus of the current review. These lesions often result from small vessel pathologies such as arteriolosclerosis or cerebral amyloid angiopathy. They typically go undetected in clinical-radiological correlation studies that rely on conventional structural MRI, though the largest acute microinfarcts may be detectable by diffusion-weighted imaging. Given their high numbers and widespread distribution, microinfarcts may directly disrupt important cognitive networks and thus account for some of the neurologic dysfunction seen in association with lesions visible on conventional MRI such as lacunar infarcts and white matter hyperintensities. Standardized neuropathological assessment criteria and development of non-invasive means of detection during life would be major steps towards understanding the causes and consequences of the otherwise macroscopically invisible microinfarct

    Impacts of birds of prey on gamebirds in the UK: a review

    The influence of predators on the distribution, density and dynamics of their prey species has long been of interest to ecologists and wildlife managers. Where the prey population is also utilised by humans, conflicts may arise through competition for a limited resource. Because gamebird shooting in the UK provides employment, recreation and income, the impact of birds of prey on gamebird populations has been the subject of intense debate for many years. A variety of approaches has been used to assess the impacts that raptors have on gamebird populations. Here we review the applicability and limitations of the methods used and assess the scientific evidence for population-level and economic impacts of raptors on gamebird populations in the UK. Raptors may, in some situations, take large numbers of gamebirds and may be an important proximate cause of mortality, although few studies have assressed the impacts of raptors on either breeding or pre-shooting densities. Two exceptions are studies of Hen Harrier and Peregrine predation on Red Grouse on moorland in Scotland and Sparrowhawk predation on Grey Partridge on farmland in England. Both these studies suggested that raptors could have population-level impacts when their gamebird prey was already at low density. Studies on predation of captively bred gamebirds suggest that numbers taken by raptors at release pens vary considerably and in a few cases raptors have been documented killing relatively large numbers. On the whole, however, it appears that raptors account for a relatively small proportion of mortality among released birds and the impact on subsequent shooting bags is unknown. We summarise important gaps in current knowledge and recommend specific areas for future research

    Latent Factor Analysis to Discover Pathway-Associated Putative Segmental Aneuploidies in Human Cancers

    Tumor microenvironmental stresses, such as hypoxia and lactic acidosis, play important roles in tumor progression. Although gene signatures reflecting the influence of these stresses are powerful approaches to link expression with phenotypes, they do not fully reflect the complexity of human cancers. Here, we describe the use of latent factor models to further dissect the stress gene signatures in a breast cancer expression dataset. The genes in these latent factors are coordinately expressed in tumors and depict distinct, interacting components of the biological processes. The genes in several latent factors are highly enriched in chromosomal locations. When these factors are analyzed in independent datasets with gene expression and array CGH data, the expression values of these factors are highly correlated with copy number alterations (CNAs) of the corresponding BAC clones in both the cell lines and tumors. Therefore, variation in the expression of these pathway-associated factors is at least partially caused by variation in gene dosage and CNAs among breast cancers. We have also found the expression of two latent factors without any chromosomal enrichment is highly associated with 12q CNA, likely an instance of “trans”-variations in which CNA leads to the variations in gene expression outside of the CNA region. In addition, we have found that factor 26 (1q CNA) is negatively correlated with HIF-1α protein and hypoxia pathways in breast tumors and cell lines. This agrees with, and for the first time links, known good prognosis associated with both a low hypoxia signature and the presence of CNA in this region. Taken together, these results suggest the possibility that tumor segmental aneuploidy makes significant contributions to variation in the lactic acidosis/hypoxia gene signatures in human cancers and demonstrate that latent factor analysis is a powerful means to uncover such a linkage

    Physical fitness training for stroke patients

    Fitness training is considered beneficial for stroke patients. Physical fitness is important for the performance of everyday activities. The physical fitness of stroke patients is impaired after their stroke and this may reduce their ability to perform everyday activities and also exacerbate any stroke-related disability. This review of 32 trials involving 1414 participants found that cardiorespiratory fitness training after stroke can improve walking performance.
