    Symbolic energy estimation model with optimum start algorithm implementation

    The drive to reduce carbon emissions and energy utilisation, directly associated with dwellings and to achieve a zero carbon home, suggests that the assessment of energy ratings will have an increasingly prioritised role in the built environment. Created by the Building Research Establishment (BRE), the Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP) is the UK Government’s recommended method of assessing the energy ratings of dwellings. This paper describes a new, simplified dynamic method (hence known as IDEAS – Inverse Dynamics based Energy Analysis and Simulation) of assessing the controllability of a building and its servicing systems. The IDEAS method produces results that are comparable to SAP. An Optimum Start algorithm is explored in this paper to allow heating systems of different responsiveness and size to be integrated into the IDEAS framework. Results suggest that this design approach could enhance the SAP Methodology by the addition of advanced systems controllability and dynamic values

    Comprehension of object-oriented software cohesion: The empirical quagmire

    Chidamber and Kemerer (1991) proposed an object-oriented (OO) metric suite which included the Lack of Cohesion Of Methods (LCOM) metric. Despite considerable effort both theoretically and empirically since then, the software engineering community is still no nearer finding a generally accepted definition or measure of OO cohesion. Yet, achieving highly cohesive software is a cornerstone of software comprehension and hence, maintainability. In this paper, we suggest a number of suppositions as to why a definition has eluded (and we feel will continue to elude) us. We support these suppositions with empirical evidence from three large C++ systems and a cohesion metric based on the parameters of the class methods; we also draw from other related work. Two major conclusions emerge from the study. Firstly, any sensible cohesion metric does at least provide insight into the features of the systems being analysed. Secondly however, and less reassuringly, the deeper the investigative search for a definitive measure of cohesion, the more problematic its understanding becomes; this casts serious doubt on the use of cohesion as a meaningful feature of object-orientation and its viability as a tool for software comprehension

    Auto-tuning for high performance autopilot design

    A novel auto-tuning method for the RIDE controller algorithm is presented. The RIDE controller is applied to a high performance aircraft model. The tuner utilises a constrained genetic algorithm to automate the tuning process. The results of the tuner are compared with that of another tuning method which utilises unconstrained optimisation so as to highlight the efficacy of constrained optimisation for this application. It is shown from the results that the constrained genetic algorithm optimisation scheme offers a highly effective tuning solution which can be used to attain safe and high performance control with the RIDE control algorithm

    A meta-analysis approach to refactoring and XP

    The mechanics of seventy-two different Java refactorings are described fully in Fowler's text. In the same text, Fowler describes seven categories of refactoring, into which each of the seventy-two refactorings can be placed. A current research problem in the refactoring and XP community is assessing the likely time and testing effort for each refactoring, since any single refactoring may use any number of other refactorings as part of its mechanics and, in turn, can be used by many other refactorings. In this paper, we draw on a dependency analysis carried out as part of our research in which we identify the 'Use' and 'Used By' relationships of refactorings in all seven categories. We offer reasons why refactorings in the 'Dealing with Generalisation' category seem to embrace two distinct refactoring sub-categories and how refactorings in the 'Moving Features between Objects' category also exhibit specific characteristics. In a wider sense, our meta-analysis provides a developer with concrete guidelines on which refactorings, due to their explicit dependencies, will prove problematic from an effort and testing perspective

    The application of metrics to industrial prototyping processes: An empirical study

    A key problem in the development of information systems is understanding features of the development process. To this end, in recent years, considerable interest has been focused on modelling processes. In this paper, the results of an empirical investigation into the use of prototyping in information systems development is described. Nine prototyping processes across eight different sites of varying size were analysed and data relating to each process collected. The notation of Role Activity Diagrams (RADs) was used to capture each of the nine processes. Analysis of the interactions in each process revealed that the project manager interacted with the prototyper far more often in large developments than in small or medium-sized developments. However, significantly more interactions between the project manager and end-user were found in small-sized developments than for any other sized site. The study demonstrates how measures of business models can aid analysis of the process rather than the product and highlights the need for more empirical investigation into this and other facets of the development process.     A holistic analysis method to assess the controllability of commercial buildings and their systems

    This paper describes a novel design process for advanced MIMO (multiple inputs and multiple outputs) control system design and simulation for buildings. The paper describes the knowledge transfer from high technology disciplines such as aerospace flight control systems and the space industry to establish a three-step modelling and design process. In step 1, simplified, but holistic nonlinear and linearised dynamic models of the building and its systems is derived. This model is used to analyse the controllability of the building. In step 2, further synthesis of this model leads to the correct topology of the control system design. This is proved through the use of simulation using the simple building model. In step 3, the controller design is proved using a fully detailed building simulation such as ESP-r that acts as a type of virtual prototype of the building. The conclusions show that this design approach can help in the design of superior and more complex control systems especially for buildings designed with a Climate Adaptive Building (CAB) philosophy where many control inputs and outputs are used to control the building's temperature, concentration of CO2, humidity and lighting levels

    A thread-tag based semantics for sequence diagrams

    The sequence diagram is one of the most popular behaviour modelling languages which offers an intuitive and visual way of describing expected behaviour of object-oriented software. Much research work has investigated ways of providing a formal semantics for sequence diagrams. However, these proposed semantics may not properly interpret sequence diagrams when lifelines do not correspond to threads of controls. In this paper, we address this problem and propose a thread-tag based sequence diagram as a solution. A formal, partially ordered multiset based semantics for the thread-tag based sequence diagrams is proposed

    The Role of Thyroid Hormone in the Ventromedial Nucleus of the Hypothalamus

    The hypothalamic arcuate and paraventricular nuclei play important roles in the neuroendocrine regulation of systemic thyroid hormone homeostasis. However, the roles of other hypothalamic regions are poorly understood. Triiodothyronine (T3) is the active form of thyroid hormone. T3 administration to the hypothalamic ventromedial nucleus (VMN) of rats stimulates feeding, although the mechanism remains unclear. Activation and inactivation of thyroid hormones is mediated by the iodothyonine deiodinases, where D2 is the activating enzyme and D3 the inactivating enzyme. Recombinant adeno-associated virus (rAAV) vectors were designed to modulate the local activity of thyroid hormones by over-expressing D2 (rAAV-D2) or D3 (rAAV-D3). Two initial investigations were carried out employing these viruses in vivo. Initially, rats received bilateral injections of either rAAV-D2 or rAAV-GFP into the VMN. Cumulative food intake and body weight were unaffected, despite a significant increase D2 enzyme activity. However, fasted rAAV-D2 treated rats consumed significantly more food than controls over the initial 2 hours of refeeding following a 12 fast. In the second investigation, rats received bilateral injections of either rAAV-D3 or rAAV-GFP into the VMN. Hypothalamic D3 mRNA and brown adipose tissue activity were both significantly increased in the rAAV-D3 group, which was not associated with any change in systemic thyroid hormone levels. This suggested that sympathetic activity had been increased, independent of peripheral thyroid status. In a final investigation, rats were challenged with a high fat diet (HFD) 17 days after iVMN injection of either rAAV-D3 or rAAV-GFP. The rAAV-D3 treated group gained significantly more weight and consumed significantly more energy than controls, per day of HFD treatment. The increased HFD consumption was matched with a significant increase in hypothalamic fatty acid synthase mRNA. This thesis highlights putative mechanisms by which thyroid hormones affect peripheral metabolism and appetite via the VMN, through interplay with neuronal fatty acid homeostasis
