New insights into the manual activities of individuals from the Phaleron cemetery (Archaic Athens, Greece)
Until the early 5th century BC, Phaleron Bay was the main port of ancient Athens (Greece). On its shore, archaeologists have discovered one of the largest known cemeteries in ancient Greece, including a range of burial forms, simple pits, cremations, larnaces (clay tubs), and series of burials of male individuals who appear to have died violent deaths, referred to here as “atypical burials”. Reconstructing the osteobiographies of these individuals will help create a deeper understanding of the socio-political conditions preceding the rise of Classical Athens. Here, we assess the habitual manual behavior of the people of Archaic Phaleron (ca. 7th – 6th cent. BC), relying on a new and precise three-dimensional method for reconstructing physical activity based on hand muscle attachment sites. This approach has been recently validated on laboratory animal samples as well as on recent human skeletons with a detailed level of long-term occupational documentation (i.e., the mid-19th century Basel Spitalfriedhof sample). Our Phaleron sample consists of 48 adequately preserved hand skeletons, of which 14 correspond to atypical burials. Our results identified consistent differences in habitual manual behaviors between atypical burials and the rest. The former present a distinctive power-grasping tendency in most skeletons, which was significantly less represented in the latter (p-values of <0.01 and 0.03). Based on a comparison with the uniquely documented Basel sample (45 individuals), this entheseal pattern of the atypical burials was exclusively found in long-term heavy manual laborers. These findings reveal an important activity difference between burials typical for the Phaleron cemetery and atypical burials, suggesting that the latter were likely involved in distinctive, strenuous manual activities. The results of this pilot study comprise an important first step towards reconstructing the identity of these human skeletal remains. Future research can further elucidate the occupational profiles of these individuals through the discovery of additional well-preserved hand skeletons and by extending our analyses to other anatomical regions
Eine frühkaiserzeitliche Grubenverfüllung aus dem Hanghaus 2
Im Jahr 2004 wurde bei Grabungen im Hanghaus 2 eine vollständig
verfüllte Grube freigelegt. Die Grubenverfüllung enthielt zahlreiches Fundmaterial. Die Keramikfunde aus diesem Kontext werden in der Arbeit vorgelegt.
Das Keramikmaterial zeichnet sich durch eine große Diversität aus. Die chronologische Auswertung anhand von Vergleichsbeispielen ergibt, dass der Kontext in spätneronisch bis frühflavische Zeit datiert werden kann.
Eine funktionelle Auswertung des keramischen Fundmaterials zeigt, dass ein Großteil der Gefäße als Tafelgeschirr genutzt wurden. Ebenfalls häufig treten Gefäße der Vorratshaltung auf.
Für die Interpretation des Kontextes wurden neben der Keramik auch die weiteren
Fundgattungen herangezogen. Im Vergleich mit Opfergruben zeigt sich, dass das zahlreiche Auftreten von Tafelgeschirr in Verbindung mit Terrakotten und Tierknochen mit Schnittspuren als Hinweise für eine Opfergrube gedeutet werden können. Die Tierknochenfunde sprechen jedoch nicht in ihrer Gesamtheit für eine derartige Interpretation. Auf Grund dessen kann der Kontext nicht eindeutig interpretiert werden.
Die Keramikfunde können auch dazu herangezogen werden, den Keramikmarkt in Ephesos im entsprechenden Zeitraum zu untersuchen. Neben den meist lokal produzierten Waren wie Gebrauchskeramik und Küchenware zeigt sich auch bei der Feinware eine deutliche Tendenz zu lokal oder regional produzierten Formen
DNA-templated photonic arrays and assemblies : design principles and future opportunities
Molecular photonics is a rapidly developing and multi-disciplinary field of research involving the construction of molecular assemblies comprising photoactive building blocks that are responsive to a light stimulus. A salient challenge in this field is the controlled assembly of these building blocks with nanoscale precision. DNA exhibits considerable promise as an architecture for the templated assembly of photoactive materials. Population-based serological studies allow to estimate prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 infections despite a substantial number of mild or asymptomatic disease courses. This became even more relevant for decision making after vaccination started. The KoCo19 cohort tracks the pandemic progress in the Munich general population for over two years, setting it apart in Europe.
**Methods**
Recruitment occurred during the initial pandemic wave, including 5313 participants above 13 years from private households in Munich. Four follow-ups were held at crucial times of the pandemic, with response rates of at least 70%. Participants filled questionnaires on socio-demographics and potential risk factors of infection. From Follow-up 2, information on SARS-CoV-2 vaccination was added. SARS-CoV-2 antibody status was measured using the Roche Elecsys® Anti-SARS-CoV-2 anti-N assay (indicating previous infection) and the Roche Elecsys® Anti-SARS-CoV-2 anti-S assay (indicating previous infection and/or vaccination). This allowed us to distinguish between sources of acquired antibodies.
**Results**
The SARS-CoV-2 estimated cumulative sero-prevalence increased from 1.6% (1.1-2.1%) in May 2020 to 14.5% (12.7-16.2%) in November 2021. Underreporting with respect to official numbers fluctuated with testing policies and capacities, becoming a factor of more than two during the second half of 2021. Simultaneously, the vaccination campaign against the SARS-CoV-2 virus increased the percentage of the Munich population having antibodies, with 86.8% (85.5-87.9%) having developed anti-S and/or anti-N in November 2021. Incidence rates for infections after (BTI) and without previous vaccination (INS) differed (ratio INS/BTI of 2.1, 0.7-3.6). However, the prevalence of infections was higher in the non-vaccinated population than in the vaccinated one. Considering the whole follow-up time, being born outside Germany, working in a high-risk job and living area per inhabitant were identified as risk factors for infection, while other socio-demographic and health-related variables were not. Although we obtained significant within-household clustering of SARS-CoV-2 cases, no further geospatial clustering was found.
**Conclusions**
Vaccination increased the coverage of the Munich population presenting SARS-CoV-2 antibodies, but breakthrough infections contribute to community spread. As underreporting stays relevant over time, infections can go undetected, so non-pharmaceutical measures are crucial, particularly for highly contagious strains like Omicron
