    La naissance et le developpement de la biospéologie ante et post Émile Racovitza, 1907

    [spa] Desde principios del siglo XIX la búsqueda de una fauna desconocida, la fauna cavernícola, dentro de un hábitat nuevo e inexplorado, las cuevas y simas, hizo que un creciente número de zoólogos prospeccionara con entusiasmo el medio subterráneo y llegara a diversas conclusiones, que todavía hoy resultan válidas, acerca de las modificaciones anatómicas propias de los animales cavernícolas. A finales del siglo XIX, las observaciones y descripciones que se habían acumulado eran suficientemente consistentes como para que varios autores propusieran interpretaciones, a menudo contradictorias, sobre el origen de los organismos cavernícolas y sobre las peculiares adaptaciones que éstos habían experimentado bajo la influencia de las condiciones del medio subterráneo. El hallazgo, en 1904, de Typhlocirolana moraguesi en las Coves del Drac fue determinante en la trayectoria científica de Émile Racovitza y, pocos años más tarde, le condujo a redactar una síntesis crítica y brillante titulada Essai sur les problèmes biospéologiques. Este artículo, que fue publicado en 1907, constituye un hito muy destacable en la historia de la Biología Subterránea.[cat] Des de començaments del segle XIX la recerca d’una fauna desconeguda, la fauna cavernícola, dins d’un nou hàbitat, les coves, va fer que un nombre creixent de zoòlegs prospectés amb entusiasme el medi subterrani i arribés a certes conclusions, que avui encara són vigents, sobre les modificacions anatòmiques pròpies dels animals cavernícoles. A finals del segle XIX, la quantitat d’observacions i de descripcions acumulades era prou consistent perquè alguns autors proposassin interpretacions, sovint contradictòries, sobre l’origen dels organismes cavernícoles i sobre les seves peculiars adaptacions sota la influència de les condicions del medi subterrani. En 1904, la troballa de Typhlocirolana moraguesi a les Coves del Drac va ésser determinant en la trajectòria científica d’Émile Racovitza i, en poc temps, li va permetre redactar una síntesi crítica i brillant amb el títol Essai sur les problèmes biospéologiques.     High Conservatism in the Composition of Scent Gland Secretions in Cyphophthalmid Harvestmen: Evidence from Pettalidae

    The scent gland secretion of Austropurcellia forsteri was analyzed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, providing the first description of the secretion chemistry in the cyphophthalmid family Pettalidae. The secretion contained a total of 21 compounds: About 60% of the whole secretion consisted of a series of saturated, mono-unsaturated and doubly unsaturated methylketones, from C11 to C15, with a cluster of saturated and mono-unsaturated C13-methylketones dominating. A second fraction included several naphthoquinones such as 1,4-naphthoquinone (ca. 20% of secretion), 6-methyl-1,4-naphthoquinone (ca. 17%), and minor amounts of chloronaphthoquinones (ca. 2%). When compared with scent gland compositions of other representatives of cyphophthalmids (e.g. from families Sironidae and Stylocellidae), a highly conservative chemistry of cyphophthalmid secretions is apparent, based on a restricted number of methylketones and naphthoquinones

    Naphthoquinones and Anthraquinones from Scent Glands of a Dyspnoid Harvestman, Paranemastoma quadripunctatum

    Extracts of Paranemastoma quadripunctatum (Opiliones, Dyspnoi, Nemastomatidae) contained seven components, all of which likely originated from the secretion of well-developed prosomal scent glands. The two main components (together accounting for more than 90% of the secretion) were identified as 1,4-naphthoquinone and 6-methyl-1,4-naphthoquinone. The minor components were 1,4-naphthalenediol, two methoxy-naphthoquinones (2-methoxy-1,4-naphthoquinone, and 2-methoxy-6-methyl-1,4-naphthoquinone) and two anthraquinones (2-methyl-9,10-anthraquinone and a dimethyl-9,10-anthraquinone). While some chemical data on scent gland secretions of the other suborders of Opiliones (Cyphophthalmi, palpatorean Eupnoi, and Laniatores) already exist, this is the first report on the scent gland chemistry in the Dyspnoi. Naphthoquinones are known scent gland exudates of Cyphophthalmi and certain Eupnoi, methoxy-naphthoquinones and anthraquinones are new for opilionid scent gland secretions

    Intense hurricane activity over the past 1500 years at South Andros Island, the Bahamas

Unfortunately, historical hurricane records are too short and incomplete to capture hurricane‐climate interactions on multi‐decadal and longer timescales. Coarse‐grained, hurricane‐induced deposits preserved in blue holes in the Caribbean can provide records of past hurricane activity extending back thousands of years. Here we present a high resolution record of intense hurricane events over the past 1500 years from a blue hole on South Andros Island on the Great Bahama Bank. This record is corroborated by shorter reconstructions from cores collected at two nearby blue holes. The record contains coarse‐grained event deposits attributable to known historical hurricane strikes within age uncertainties. Over the past 1500 years, South Andros shows evidence of four active periods of hurricane activity. None of these active intervals occurred in the past 163 years. We suggest that Intertropical Convergence Zone position modulates hurricane activity on the island based on a correlation with Cariaco Basin titanium concentrations. An anomalous gap in activity on South Andros Island in the early 13th century corresponds to a period of increased volcanism. The patterns of hurricane activity reconstructed from South Andros Island closely match those from the northeastern Gulf of Mexico but are anti‐phased with records from New England.     Climate change may drive cave spiders to extinction

    Subterranean ecosystems present ideal opportunities to study mechanisms underlying responses to changes in climate because species within them are often adapted to a largely constant temperature. We have characterized the thermal conditions of caves in the Western Alps, and relate these hypogean climate data to the occurrence of Troglohyphantes troglobiontic spiders (Araneae, Linyphiidae). Our data indicate that present distributions reflect Pleistocence glaciation events and also point to specific responses as a consequence of changes in temperature. Constant temperatures recorded inside caves provide an approximation of the mean annual temperature outside, thus we extend the results to a regional scale. Ecological niche modeling is used to predict habitat suitability both in the Pleistocene and under future global warming scenarios. These analyses point toward a future decline in habitat suitability for subterranean spiders and the potential extinction of the most restricted endemic species
