Deletion Analysis of the Promoter for the Cucumber Necrosis Virus 0.9-kb Subgenomic RNA
AbstractSequences comprising the core promoter for the cucumber necrosis virus (CNV) 0.9-kb subgenomic RNA have been determined using deletion analysis and site-directed mutagenesis. The deletion studies indicate that the promoter lies within a region located 20 nucleotides upstream and 6 nucleotides downstream and including the subgenomic start site. Sequences further upstream or downstream of the core promoter do not appear to strongly affect promoter activity or viral RNA accumulation. Results of site-directed mutagenesis studies indicate that nucleotides immediately surrounding the subgenomic start site regulate promoter activity. Comparison of sequences within the CNV promoter region with the corresponding region of other tombusviruses shows that the tombusvirus promoter shares a region of near complete identity in 14 of the 26 core promoter nucleotides. Little similarity exists between the CNV 0.9-kb subgenomic RNA promoter and the region surrounding the transcription initiation site for the CNV 2.1-kb subgenomic RNA. Likewise, limited similarity occurs with the 5Ⲡregion of CNV genomic RNA. Sequences similar to the ICR2-like motifs found in the promoters of several alphavirus-like (supergroup III) plant and animal viruses are not apparent. Phylogenetic diversity of insecticolous fusaria inferred from multilocus DNA sequence data and their molecular identification via FUSARIUM-ID and Fusarium MLST
We constructed several multilocus DNA sequence datasets to assess the phylogenetic diversity of insecticolous fusaria, especially focusing on those housed at the Agricultural Research Service Collection of Entomopathogenic Fungi (ARSEF), and to aid molecular identifications of unknowns via the FUSARIUM-ID and Fusarium MLST online databases and analysis packages. Analyses of a 190-taxon, two-locus dataset, which included 159 isolates from insects, indicated that: (i) insect-associated fusaria were nested within 10 species complexes spanning the phylogenetic breadth of Fusarium, (ii) novel, putatively unnamed insecticolous species were nested within 8/10 species complexes and (iii) Latin binomials could be applied with confidence to only 18/58 phylogenetically distinct fusaria associated with pest insects. Phylogenetic analyses of an 82-taxon, three-locus dataset nearly fully resolved evolutionary relationships among the 10 clades containing insecticolous fusaria. Multilocus typing of isolates within four species complexes identified surprisingly high genetic diversity in that 63/65 of the fusaria typed represented newly discovered haplotypes. Maser action in methanol transitions
We report the detection with the ATCA of 6.7 GHz methanol emission towards
OMC-1. The source has a size between 40'' and 90'', is located to the
south-east of Ori-KL and may coincide in position with the 25 GHz masers. The
source may be an example of an interesting case recently predicted in theory
where the transitions of traditionally different methanol maser classes show
maser activity simultaneously. In addition, results of recent search for

Measuring proper motions of isolated neutron stars with Chandra
The excellent spatial resolution of the Chandra observatory offers the
unprecedented possibility to measure proper motions at X-ray wavelength with
relatively high accuracy using as reference the background of extragalactic or
remote galactic X-ray sources. We took advantage of this capability to
constrain the proper motion of RX J0806.4-4123 and RX J0420.0-5022, two X-ray
bright and radio quiet isolated neutron stars (INSs) discovered by ROSAT and
lacking an optical counterpart. In this paper, we present results from a
preliminary analysis from which we derive 2 sigma upper limits of 76 mas/yr and
138 mas/yr on the proper motions of RX J0806.4-4123 and RX J0420.0-5022
respectively. We use these values together with those of other ROSAT discovered
INSs to constrain the origin, distance and evolutionary status of this
particular group of objects. We find that the tangential velocities of radio
quiet ROSAT neutron stars are probably consistent with those of 'normal'
pulsars. Their distribution on the sky and, for those having accurate proper
motion vectors, their possible birth places, all point to a local population,

Eureka and beyond: mining's impact on African urbanisation
This collection brings separate literatures on mining and urbanisation together at a time when both artisanal and large-scale mining are expanding in many African economies. While much has been written about contestation over land and mineral rights, the impact of mining on settlement, notably its catalytic and fluctuating effects on migration and urban growth, has been largely ignored. African nation-statesâ urbanisation trends have shown considerable variation over the past half century. The current surge in ânewâ mining countries and the slow-down in âoldâ mining countries are generating some remarkable settlement patterns and welfare outcomes. Presently, the African continent is a laboratory of national mining experiences. This special issue on African mining and urbanisation encompasses a wide cross-section of country case studies: beginning with the historical experiences of mining in Southern Africa (South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe), followed by more recent mineralizing trends in comparatively new mineral-producing countries (Tanzania) and an established West African gold producer (Ghana), before turning to the influence of conflict minerals (Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Sierra Leone)
Weak lensing, dark matter and dark energy
Weak gravitational lensing is rapidly becoming one of the principal probes of
dark matter and dark energy in the universe. In this brief review we outline
how weak lensing helps determine the structure of dark matter halos, measure
the expansion rate of the universe, and distinguish between modified gravity
and dark energy explanations for the acceleration of the universe. We also
discuss requirements on the control of systematic errors so that the
systematics do not appreciably degrade the power of weak lensing as a

Identifying genotype specific elevated-risk areas and associated herd risk factors for bovine tuberculosis spread in British cattle
Bovine tuberculosis (bTB) is a chronic zoonosis with major health and economic impact on the cattle industry. Despite extensive control measures in cattle and culling trials in wildlife, the reasons behind the expansion of areas with high incidence of bTB breakdowns in Great Britain remain unexplained. By balancing the importance of cattle movements and local transmission on the observed pattern of cattle outbreaks, we identify areas at elevated risk of infection from specific Mycobacterium bovis genotypes. We show that elevated-risk areas (ERAs) were historically more extensive than previously understood, and that cattle movements alone are insufficient for ERA spread, suggesting the involvement of other factors. For all genotypes, we find that, while the absolute risk of infection is higher in ERAs compared to areas with intermittent risk, the statistically significant risk factors are remarkably similar in both, suggesting that these risk factors can be used to identify incipient ERAs before this is indicated by elevated incidence alone. Our findings identify research priorities for understanding bTB dynamics, improving surveillance and guiding management to prevent further ERA expansion
Search for a W' boson decaying to a bottom quark and a top quark in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
Results are presented from a search for a W' boson using a dataset
corresponding to 5.0 inverse femtobarns of integrated luminosity collected
during 2011 by the CMS experiment at the LHC in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV.
The W' boson is modeled as a heavy W boson, but different scenarios for the
couplings to fermions are considered, involving both left-handed and
right-handed chiral projections of the fermions, as well as an arbitrary
mixture of the two. The search is performed in the decay channel W' to t b,
leading to a final state signature with a single lepton (e, mu), missing
transverse energy, and jets, at least one of which is tagged as a b-jet. A W'
boson that couples to fermions with the same coupling constant as the W, but to
the right-handed rather than left-handed chiral projections, is excluded for
masses below 1.85 TeV at the 95% confidence level. For the first time using LHC
data, constraints on the W' gauge coupling for a set of left- and right-handed
coupling combinations have been placed. These results represent a significant

Measurement of the Lambda(b) cross section and the anti-Lambda(b) to Lambda(b) ratio with Lambda(b) to J/Psi Lambda decays in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
The Lambda(b) differential production cross section and the cross section
ratio anti-Lambda(b)/Lambda(b) are measured as functions of transverse momentum
pt(Lambda(b)) and rapidity abs(y(Lambda(b))) in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7
TeV using data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The measurements are
based on Lambda(b) decays reconstructed in the exclusive final state J/Psi
Lambda, with the subsequent decays J/Psi to an opposite-sign muon pair and
Lambda to proton pion, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated
luminosity of 1.9 inverse femtobarns. The product of the cross section times
the branching ratio for Lambda(b) to J/Psi Lambda versus pt(Lambda(b)) falls
faster than that of b mesons. The measured value of the cross section times the
branching ratio for pt(Lambda(b)) > 10 GeV and abs(y(Lambda(b))) < 2.0 is 1.06
+/- 0.06 +/- 0.12 nb, and the integrated cross section ratio for
anti-Lambda(b)/Lambda(b) is 1.02 +/- 0.07 +/- 0.09, where the uncertainties are
