    Getting Off on the Right Foot: Addressing Severe Lymphedema through a Novel Shoe Design

    Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS) is a service-learning design program run by the College of Engineering at Purdue University. EPICS teaches students design skills by providing solutions for individuals, communities, and organizations in the surrounding area while mirroring engineering industry standards. Biomedical Engineering is a team within EPICS that strives to serve community partners through biomedical applications. HR is a patient who suffers from severe lymphedema. This condition results in her foot swelling three times its original size and requires her to utilize weekly leg compression therapy. Prescription shoes are slightly adequate. However, they lead to sores and pain due to fitting improperly and the expansion of her legs before her next compression treatment. HR reached out to the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering to seek a solution. This project entails the design and fabrication of a prototype shoe that addresses the patient’s need to walk with shoes while effectively accommodating her symptoms. The user needs include condition accommodation, aesthetics, comfort, ease of use, cost, utility, and standardized documentation language. The design uses a novel break-sole passive expansion system that exceeds the normal passive expandable properties of other shoes, in addition to several expandable points that aid in functionality and comfort. The goal is that with this product, HR can get back to the things that she loves, including photography and hiking

    Measurement of the prompt J/psi and psi(2S) polarizations in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV

    The polarizations of prompt J/psi and psi(2S) mesons are measured in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV, using a dimuon data sample collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.9 inverse femtobarns. The prompt J/psi and psi(2S) polarization parameters lambda[theta], lambda[phi], and lambda[theta, phi], as well as the frame-invariant quantity lambda(tilde), are measured from the dimuon decay angular distributions in three different polarization frames. The J/psi results are obtained in the transverse momentum range 14 < pt < 70 GeV, in the rapidity intervals abs(y) < 0.6 and 0.6 < abs(y) < 1.2. The corresponding psi(2S) results cover 14 < pt < 50 GeV and include a third rapidity bin, 1.2 < abs(y) < 1.5. No evidence of large transverse or longitudinal polarizations is seen in these kinematic regions, which extend much beyond those previously explored

    In het aansprakelijkheidsrecht heeft een benadeelde in beginsel recht op volledige vergoeding van zijn schade. De gevolgen van de schadetoebrengende gebeurtenis dienen zoveel als mogelijk te worden weggenomen of te worden gecompenseerd. Daarbij wordt gekeken naar de situatie waarin de benadeelde zou hebben verkeerd indien de schadetoebrengende gebeurtenis niet zou hebben plaatsgevonden. Dat is bij overlijden per definitie problematisch. Er is iemand weggevallen, wat vele gevolgen heeft. De schade als gevolg van het overlijden komt maar beperkt voor vergoeding in aanmerking. In artikel 6:108 BW is een drietal beperkingen te vinden. Het gaat hier om beperkingen ten aanzien van de aard van de schade, de kring van gerechtigden en de omvang van de schade. Daarbij hinkt het recht op schadevergoeding bij overlijden op twee gedachten. Aan de ene kant is er het aansprakelijkheidsrecht, maar de geleden schade komt niet volledig voor vergoeding in aanmerking. Aan de andere kant is er het recht op alimentatie uit het familierecht, maar dat wordt bij overlijden niet consequent toegepast. De motieven voor de beperkingen van het recht op schadevergoeding zijn achterhaald en niet (langer) overtuigend. Het recht is niet bij de tijd, het sluit niet aan bij de maatschappelijke ontwikkelingen. De beperkingen die het recht op schadevergoeding bij overlijden in de huidige samenleving met zich meebrengt zorgen voor complexe methoden om de nabestaanden tegemoet te komen en oogsten daardoor veel kritiek. In deze bijdrage wordt die kritiek besproken. De bijdrage wordt afgesloten met enkele denkrichtingen voor nader onderzoek

    Measurement of the sum ofWW and WZ production with W+dijet events in pp collisions at √ s = 7 TeV

    A measurement of the inclusive WW+WZ diboson production cross section in proton–proton collisions is reported, based on events containing a leptonically decaying √W boson and exactly two jets. The data sample, collected at s = 7 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 fb−1. The measured value of the sum of the inclusive WW and WZ cross sections is σ(pp → WW + WZ) = 68.9 ± 8.7 (stat.) ± 9.7 (syst.) ± 1.5 (lum.) pb, consistent with the standard model prediction of 65.6±2.2 pb. This is the first measurement of WW+WZ production in pp collisions using this signature. No evidence for anomalous triple gauge couplings is found and upper limits are set on their magnitudes

    Description and performance of track and primary-vertex reconstruction with the CMS tracker

    A description is provided of the software algorithms developed for the CMS tracker both for reconstructing charged-particle trajectories in proton-proton interactions and for using the resulting tracks to estimate the positions of the LHC luminous region and individual primary-interaction vertices. Despite the very hostile environment at the LHC, the performance obtained with these algorithms is found to be excellent. For tbar t events under typical 2011 pileup conditions, the average track-reconstruction efficiency for promptly-produced charged particles with transverse momenta of pT > 0.9GeV is 94% for pseudorapidities of |η| < 0.9 and 85% for 0.9 < |η| < 2.5. The inefficiency is caused mainly by hadrons that undergo nuclear interactions in the tracker material. For isolated muons, the corresponding efficiencies are essentially 100%. For isolated muons of pT = 100GeV emitted at |η| < 1.4, the resolutions are approximately 2.8% in pT, and respectively, 10μm and 30μm in the transverse and longitudinal impact parameters. The position resolution achieved for reconstructed primary vertices that correspond to interesting pp collisions is 10–12μm in each of the three spatial dimensions. The tracking and vertexing software is fast and flexible, and easily adaptable to other functions, such as fast tracking for the trigger, or dedicated tracking for electrons that takes into account bremsstrahlung

    Jet and underlying event properties as a function of charged-particle multiplicity in proton-proton collisions at √s=7 TeV

    This is the pre-print version of the final published paper that is available from the link belowCharacteristics of multi-particle production in proton-proton collisions at √s=7 TeV are studied as a function of the charged-particle multiplicity, N. The produced particles are separated into two classes: those belonging to jets and those belonging to the underlying event. Charged particles are measured with pseudorapidity |η|0.25 GeV/c. Jets are reconstructed from charged-particles only and required to have p>5 GeV/c. The distributions of jet p, average p of charged particles belonging to the underlying event or to jets, jet rates, and jet shapes are presented as functions of N and compared to the predictions of the pythia and herwig event generators. Predictions without multi-parton interactions fail completely to describe the N-dependence observed in the data. For increasing N, pythia systematically predicts higher jet rates and harder p spectra than seen in the data, whereas herwig shows the opposite trends. At the highest multiplicity, the data-model agreement is worse for most observables, indicating the need for further tuning and/or new model ingredients
