Ein Blick für das Volk

"Die Kunst für Alle" (1885-1944) erschien als eine der populärsten deutschen Kunstzeitschriften in einem Zeitraum markanter gesellschaftlicher, politischer und technologischer Veränderungen. Das Essay "Ein Blick für das Volk" widmet sich ihrem spezifischen Anspruch, einerseits Spiegel, andererseits Propaganda für "das Volk" zu sein. Am Anfang wird das Gemälde "Kränzchen (Affen als Kunstrichter)" von Gabriel Max, entstanden 1889, analysiert. Es bietet nicht nur einen Blick für das (Affen-)Volk, sondern spiegelt die unterschiedlichen Gruppen, aus denen sich das Kunstpublikum zusammensetzt. Und es enthält Hinweise auf die staatliche Kunstpolitik in München und eröffnet damit einen weiteren Aspekt. In einer Landtagsdebatte 1890 wird der Herausgeber von "Die Kunst für Alle", Friedrich Pecht, zitiert. Die Kommentare dieses einflussreichen Kritikers, der in einem Artikel der eigenen Zeitschrift 1886 als "unangestrittener Chef des "Reichs-Kunstgesundheits-Amtes" bezeichnet wird, vertreten nationale und rassistische Standpunkte. Das ändert sich 1900 mit "modernen" Autoren wie Meier-Graefe, zu denen sich jedoch immer auch Gegenpositionen in der Zeitschrift finden lassen. Am Beispiel der Beurteilung des "Blauen Reiter" 1912 und Picassos 1913 wird das vor 1914 etablierte individualistische Profil deutlich. Es hält sich bis in die 30er Jahre und setzt sich in einem ambivalenten Verhältnis zum Nationalsozialismus fort. Bei einer Beurteilung der Zeitschrift im Bayerischen Innenministerium heißt es 1934 bezeichnenderweise, "Die Kunst für Alle" habe "neben anderen entgegengesetzten auch Aufsätze in unserem Sinne gebracht". Seit 1937 erwuchs der Zeitschrift jedoch Konkurrenz durch "Die Kunst im Dritten Reich", einer aufwändigen NS-Kunstzeitschrift. Am Ende des Essays wird die neue Situation durch Udo Wendels Gemälde "Die Kunstzeitschrift" demonstriert, wo der Maler selbst mit seinen Eltern zum Betrachter eben jener repräsentativen NS-Kunstzeitschrift geworden ist. Der Blick für das Volk ist hier jedoch der Blick in ein Reproduktionsmedium, und die technische Entwicklung verspricht ein neues, wirksameres Propagandainstrument

Die Publikation erscheint anlässlich der Ausstellung "Ein Blick für das Volk. Die Kunst für Alle" (14. Juni bis 3. September 2006 im Haus der Kunst, München), die sich mit der Zeitschrift "Die Kunst für Alle" (1885-1944) auseinandersetzt. Der angebundene PDF beinhaltet die Titelseite, Inhaltsverzeichnis, zwei Essays und den Katalog der Gemälde. Der Katalogteil enthält sämtliche Gemälde der Ausstellung, kommentiert sie kurz und gibt weiterführende Literatur an. Sofern diese Gemälde in "Die Kunst für Alle" abgebildet waren, ist die entsprechende Abbildung wiedergegeben. "Die Kunst für Alle" von Sabine Brantl gibt einen knappen Abriss der Geschichte von "Die Kunst für Alle" aus dem Münchner Bruckmann-Verlag. "Ein Blick für das Volk" von Jochen Meister nimmt zwei Exponate der Ausstellung, Gabriel von Max "Affen als Kunstrichter", 1889, und Udo Wendels "Die Kunstzeitschrift", 1939/40, als Anfangs- und Endpunkt für einen Blick auf das Verhältnis von Kunst, Publikum und einem rassistischen und nationalen Anspruch, wie er in "Die Kunst für Alle" zu finden ist

microRNA profiling in Epstein-Barr virus-associated B-cell lymphoma

The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is an oncogenic human Herpes virus found in ∼15% of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). EBV encodes miRNAs and induces changes in the cellular miRNA profile of infected cells. MiRNAs are small, non-coding RNAs of ∼19-26 nt which suppress protein synthesis by inducing translational arrest or mRNA degradation. Here, we report a comprehensive miRNA-profiling study and show that hsa-miR-424, -223, -199a-3p, -199a-5p, -27b, -378, -26b, -23a, -23b were upregulated and hsa-miR-155, -20b, -221, -151-3p, -222, -29b/c, -106a were downregulated more than 2-fold due to EBV-infection of DLBCL. All known EBV miRNAs with the exception of the BHRF1 cluster as well as EBV-miR-BART15 and -20 were present. A computational analysis indicated potential targets such as c-MYB, LATS2, c-SKI and SIAH1. We show that c-MYB is targeted by miR-155 and miR-424, that the tumor suppressor SIAH1 is targeted by miR-424, and that c-SKI is potentially regulated by miR-155. Downregulation of SIAH1 protein in DLBCL was demonstrated by immunohistochemistry. The inhibition of SIAH1 is in line with the notion that EBV impedes various pro-apoptotic pathways during tumorigenesis. The down-modulation of the oncogenic c-MYB protein, although counter-intuitive, might be explained by its tight regulation in developmental processe

Technik vergleichen: ein Analyserahmen für die Beeinflussung von Arbeit durch Technik

Wenn eine Aufgabe der Arbeitssoziologie darin besteht, einen Zusammenhang zwischen spezifischen Technologien und den Effekten ihres Einsatzes für Arbeit herzustellen, dann muss sie Technik vergleichend beschreiben. Das Ziel unseres Beitrages besteht darin, der Arbeitssoziologie einen Analyserahmen für Technik anzubieten, der vergleichende empirische Untersuchungen und die Formulierung theoretisch gehaltvoller Aussagen auf mittleren Abstraktionsebenen unterstützen soll. Wir positionieren technikvermittelte Beeinflussung in der Sozialtheorie als eine dritte Form der Beeinflussung neben interaktiver und strukturvermittelter Beeinflussung. Für die vergleichende Analyse solcher Beeinflussungen lässt sich das in den Science and Technology Studies entwickelte Konzept des Skripts nutzen. Vergleichsdimensionen für Skripte lassen sich aus allgemeinen Merkmalen von Beeinflussungssituationen ableiten. Wir demonstrieren die Anwendung des Vergleichsrahmens durch die Beantwortung der Frage, wie drei Installationsprogramme für verschiedene Versionen des Betriebssystems Linux die Handlungen der NutzerInnen beeinflussen. Durch den Vergleich der Skripte fokussiert unser Vergleichsrahmen bislang auf Beeinflussungsintentionen. Eine Ausweitung auf den Vergleich situativer Techniknutzung scheint aber möglich.If the sociology of work wants to discover links between specific technologies and their effects on work, it needs to comparatively analyse technologies. The aim of our contribution is to offer a comparative framework for technologies that enables comparative empirical investigations and the formulation of contributions to middle-range theories. We position technologically mediated influence as a third form of exercising influence besides interactive and structurally mediated influence. The comparative analysis of this form of influence can be based on the concept of a script, which has been developed in science and technology studies. Dimensions for the comparison of scripts can be derived from general properties of situations in which influence is exercised. We apply our comparative framework to three installation programmes for different versions of the Linux operating system and answer the question as to how these programmes influence the actions of users. Since it compares scripts, our framework focuses on the intentions of designers so far. However, an extension to the comparison of situated uses of technology seems possible

Differential cross section measurements for the production of a W boson in association with jets in proton–proton collisions at √s = 7 TeV

Measurements are reported of differential cross sections for the production of a W boson, which decays into a muon and a neutrino, in association with jets, as a function of several variables, including the transverse momenta (pT) and pseudorapidities of the four leading jets, the scalar sum of jet transverse momenta (HT), and the difference in azimuthal angle between the directions of each jet and the muon. The data sample of pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV was collected with the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 fb[superscript −1]. The measured cross sections are compared to predictions from Monte Carlo generators, MadGraph + pythia and sherpa, and to next-to-leading-order calculations from BlackHat + sherpa. The differential cross sections are found to be in agreement with the predictions, apart from the pT distributions of the leading jets at high pT values, the distributions of the HT at high-HT and low jet multiplicity, and the distribution of the difference in azimuthal angle between the leading jet and the muon at low values.United States. Juxtaposing BTE and ATE – on the role of the European insurance industry in funding civil litigation

One of the ways in which legal services are financed, and indeed shaped, is through private insurance arrangement. Two contrasting types of legal expenses insurance contracts (LEI) seem to dominate in Europe: before the event (BTE) and after the event (ATE) legal expenses insurance. Notwithstanding institutional differences between different legal systems, BTE and ATE insurance arrangements may be instrumental if government policy is geared towards strengthening a market-oriented system of financing access to justice for individuals and business. At the same time, emphasizing the role of a private industry as a keeper of the gates to justice raises issues of accountability and transparency, not readily reconcilable with demands of competition. Moreover, multiple actors (clients, lawyers, courts, insurers) are involved, causing behavioural dynamics which are not easily predicted or influenced. Against this background, this paper looks into BTE and ATE arrangements by analysing the particularities of BTE and ATE arrangements currently available in some European jurisdictions and by painting a picture of their respective markets and legal contexts. This allows for some reflection on the performance of BTE and ATE providers as both financiers and keepers. Two issues emerge from the analysis that are worthy of some further reflection. Firstly, there is the problematic long-term sustainability of some ATE products. Secondly, the challenges faced by policymakers that would like to nudge consumers into voluntarily taking out BTE LEI
