    Modelling the Linkage Between Landscape Metrics and Water Quality Indices of Hydrological Units in Sihu Basin, Hubei Province, China: An Allometric Model

    AbstractStudying quantitative relationships between landscape pattern and water quality is a fundamental step to assess the impacts of non-point source pollution. Many hydrological models with multi-functionality have been developed as useful tools to study several key mechanisms in non-point source pollution. In landscape ecological studies, however, the empirical modelling approaches have been dominated with emphasis on the relationships between the landscape metrics and water quality indices. The main techniques for developing those models of landscape-water quality are statistical regression analysis based on linear models. In this article, Allometric models and the traditional multiple linear regression models for estimating the linkage between landscape metrics and water quality were tested in Sihu Basin, Hubei Province, China. The models at patch class level were established in 24 hydrological units of the basin, which took nine water quality indices (EC, pH, SS, DO, COD, TN, TP, NO3--N, NH4+-N) as the dependent variables and eighteen landscape metrics calculated in FRAGSTATS 3.3 as independent variables. The results suggested that, compared with the traditional multiple linear regression models, Allometric models were more suitable for SS, DO, TP, TN, NH4+-N, in which landscape pattern metrics could explain the 80.5%, 77.7%, 58.2%, 43.9%, 67.6% of total variation, respectively. There had little difference between multiple linear regression models and Allometric models for EC and NO3--N. The coefficients of determination in Allometric models were not as strong as that obtained in the multiple linear regression models for pH and COD. The above results indicated that using Allometric model may potentially provide a new way to study the linkage between landscape metrics and water quality indices, which will help protect our regional water resources

    Alternative scheme to generate a supersinglet state of three-level atoms

    In this paper we propose an alternative scheme to generate a supersinglet state of three three-level atoms via a single-mode of a cavity QED based on the two-photon transitions described by the 'full microscopical Hamiltonian approach'. In it, three three-level atoms prepared in suitable initial states are sequentially sent through the cavity originally prepared in its vacuum state. After an appropriate choice of the atom-cavity interaction times plus a field detection the state that describes the whole atom-field system is projected in the desired supersinglet state. The fidelity and success probability of the state as well as the practical feasibility of the scheme are discussed.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, 4 table

    A Video-Based Augmented Reality System for Human-in-the-Loop Muscle Strength Assessment of Juvenile Dermatomyositis

    As the most common idiopathic inflammatory myopathy in children, juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM) is characterized by skin rashes and muscle weakness. The childhood myositis assessment scale (CMAS) is commonly used to measure the degree of muscle involvement for diagnosis or rehabilitation monitoring. On the one hand, human diagnosis is not scalable and may be subject to personal bias. On the other hand, automatic action quality assessment (AQA) algorithms cannot guarantee 100% accuracy, making them not suitable for biomedical applications. As a solution, we propose a video-based augmented reality system for human-in-the-loop muscle strength assessment of children with JDM. We first propose an AQA algorithm for muscle strength assessment of JDM using contrastive regression trained by a JDM dataset. Our core insight is to visualize the AQA results as a virtual character facilitated by a 3D animation dataset, so that users can compare the real-world patient and the virtual character to understand and verify the AQA results. To allow effective comparisons, we propose a video-based augmented reality system. Given a feed, we adapt computer vision algorithms for scene understanding, evaluate the optimal way of augmenting the virtual character into the scene, and highlight important parts for effective human verification. The experimental results confirm the effectiveness of our AQA algorithm, and the results of the user study demonstrate that humans can more accurately and quickly assess the muscle strength of children using our system

    Rms-flux relation of Cyg X-1 with RXTE: dipping and nondipping cases

    The rms (root mean square) variability is the parameter for understanding the emission temporal properties of X-ray binaries (XRBs) and active galactic nuclei (AGN). The rms-flux relation with Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) data for the dips and nondip of black hole Cyg X-1 has been investigated in this paper. Our results show that there exist the linear rms-flux relations in the frequency range 0.1-10 Hz for the dipping light curve. Moreover, this linear relation still remains during the nondip regime, but with the steeper slope than that of the dipping case in the low energy band. For the high energy band, the slopes of the dipping and nondipping cases are hardly constant within errors.     The superconductivity at 18 K in LiFeAs system

    A new iron arsenide superconducting system LiFeAs was found that crystallizes into a tetragonal structure with space group P4/nmm. The superconductivity with Tc up to 18 K was observed in the compounds. This simple 111 type layered iron arsenide superconductor can be viewed as an analogue of the infinite layer structure of copper oxides.Comment: 11 pages 3 Figure

    Far-infrared transmission studies of c-axis oriented superconducting MgB2 thin film

    We reported far-infrared transmission measurements on a c-axis oriented superconducting MgB2_{2} thin film in the frequency range of 30 \sim 250 cm1^{-1}. We found that these measurements were sensitive to values of scattering rate 1/τ1/\tau and superconducting gap 2Δ2\Delta. By fitting the experimental transmission spectra at 40 K and below, we obtained 1/τ=1/\tau = (700 \sim 1000) cm1^{-1} and 2Δ(0)2\Delta (0)\cong 42 cm1^{-1}. These two quantities suggested that MgB2_{2} belong to the dirty limit.Comment: submitted at May

    Cross sections for e+e- to hadons, pi+pi- J/Psi, and mu+mu- have been measured in the vicinity of the Psi(2S) resonance using the BESII detector operated at the BEPC. The Psi(2S) total width; partial widths to hadrons, pi+pi- J/Psi, muons; and corresponding branching fractions have been determined to be Gamma(total)= (264+-27) keV; Gamma(hadron)= (258+-26) keV, Gamma(mu)= (2.44+-0.21) keV, and Gamma(pi+pi- J/Psi)= (85+-8.7) keV; and Br(hadron)= (97.79+-0.15)%, Br(pi+pi- J/Psi)= (32+-1.4)%, Br(mu)= (0.93+-0.08)%, respectively.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure

    Measurements of the Mass and Full-Width of the ηc\eta_c Meson

    In a sample of 58 million J/ψJ/\psi events collected with the BES II detector, the process J/ψγηc\psi\to\gamma\eta_c is observed in five different decay channels: γK+Kπ+π\gamma K^+K^-\pi^+\pi^-, γπ+ππ+π\gamma\pi^+\pi^-\pi^+\pi^-, γK±KS0π\gamma K^\pm K^0_S \pi^\mp (with KS0π+πK^0_S\to\pi^+\pi^-), γϕϕ\gamma \phi\phi (with ϕK+K\phi\to K^+K^-) and γppˉ\gamma p\bar{p}. From a combined fit of all five channels, we determine the mass and full-width of ηc\eta_c to be mηc=2977.5±1.0(stat.)±1.2(syst.)m_{\eta_c}=2977.5\pm1.0 ({stat.})\pm1.2 ({syst.}) MeV/c2c^2 and Γηc=17.0±3.7(stat.)±7.4(syst.)\Gamma_{\eta_c} = 17.0\pm3.7 ({stat.})\pm7.4 ({syst.}) MeV/c2c^2.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures and 4 table.     Measurement of the polarisation of W bosons produced with large transverse momentum in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS experiment

    This paper describes an analysis of the angular distribution of W->enu and W->munu decays, using data from pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2010, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 35 pb^-1. Using the decay lepton transverse momentum and the missing transverse energy, the W decay angular distribution projected onto the transverse plane is obtained and analysed in terms of helicity fractions f0, fL and fR over two ranges of W transverse momentum (ptw): 35 < ptw < 50 GeV and ptw > 50 GeV. Good agreement is found with theoretical predictions. For ptw > 50 GeV, the values of f0 and fL-fR, averaged over charge and lepton flavour, are measured to be : f0 = 0.127 +/- 0.030 +/- 0.108 and fL-fR = 0.252 +/- 0.017 +/- 0.030, where the first uncertainties are statistical, and the second include all systematic effects.Comment: 19 pages plus author list (34 pages total), 9 figures, 11 tables, revised author list, matches European Journal of Physics C versio

    Observation of a new chi_b state in radiative transitions to Upsilon(1S) and Upsilon(2S) at ATLAS

    The chi_b(nP) quarkonium states are produced in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV and recorded by the ATLAS detector. Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.4 fb^-1, these states are reconstructed through their radiative decays to Upsilon(1S,2S) with Upsilon->mu+mu-. In addition to the mass peaks corresponding to the decay modes chi_b(1P,2P)->Upsilon(1S)gamma, a new structure centered at a mass of 10.530+/-0.005 (stat.)+/-0.009 (syst.) GeV is also observed, in both the Upsilon(1S)gamma and Upsilon(2S)gamma decay modes.
