Novel UV-transparent 2-component polyurethane resin for chip-on-board LED micro lenses
In this work we present a novel optical polymer system based on polyurethane elastomer components, which combines excellent UV transparency with high thermal stability, good hardness, high surface tension and long pot life. The material looks very promising for encapsulation and microlensing applications for chip-on-board (CoB) light-emitting diodes (LED). The extinction coefficient k, refractive index n, and bandgap parameters were derived from transmission and reflection measurements in a wavelength range of 200-890 nm. Thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry were used to provide glass transition and degradation temperatures. The surface tension was determined by means of contact angle measurements. As proof of concept, a commercial InGaN-CoB-LED is used to demonstrate the suitability of the new material for the production of microlenses. © 2020 Optical Society of America
Assessing clinical utility of preconception expanded carrier screening regarding residual risk for neurodevelopmental disorders
The magnitude of clinical utility of preconception expanded carrier screening (ECS) concerning its potential to reduce the risk of affected offspring is unknown. Since neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) in their offspring is a major concern of parents-to-be, we addressed the question of residual risk by assessing the risk-reduction potential for NDDs in a retrospective study investigating ECS with different criteria for gene selection and definition of pathogenicity.
We used exome sequencing data from 700 parents of children with NDDs and blindly screened for carrier-alleles in up to 3046 recessive/X-linked genes. Depending on variant pathogenicity thresholds and gene content, NDD-risk-reduction potential was up to 43.5% in consanguineous, and 5.1% in nonconsanguineous couples.
The risk-reduction-potential was compromised by underestimation of pathogenicity of missense variants (false-negative-rate 4.6%), inherited copy-number variants and compound heterozygosity of one inherited and one de novo variant (0.9% each).
Adherence to the ACMG recommendations of restricting ECS to high-frequency genes in nonconsanguineous couples would more than halve the detectable inherited NDD-risk.
Thus, for optimized clinical utility of ECS, screening in recessive/X-linked genes regardless of their frequency (ACMG Tier-4) and sensible pathogenicity thresholds should be considered for all couples seeking ECS
Standard Model Confronting New Results for epsilon'/epsilon
We analyze the CP violating ratio \epe=epsilon'/epsilon in the Standard Model
in view of the new KTeV results. We review the present status of the most
important non-perturbative parameters B_6, B_8, B_K and of the strange quark
mass m_s. We also briefly discuss the issues of final state interactions and
renormalization scheme dependence. Updating the values of the CKM parameters,
of m_t and Lambda (MSbar) and using Gaussian errors for the experimental input
and flat distributions for the theoretical parameters we find \epe
substantially below the NA31 and KTeV data: \epe= (7.7^{+6.0}_{-3.5}) 10^{-4}
and \epe= (5.2^{+4.6}_{-2.7}) 10^{-4} in the NDR and HV renormalization schemes
respectively. A simple scanning of all input parameters gives on the other hand
1.05 10^{-4} < \epe < 28.8 10^{-4} and 0.26 10^{-4} < \epe < 22.0 10^{-4}
respectively. Analyzing the dependence on various parameters we find that only
for extreme values of B_6, B_8 and m_s and suitable values of CKM parameters
and Lambda(MSbar), the ratio \epe can be made consistent with data. We analyze
the impact of these data on the lower bounds for Im(V_{td}V_{ts}^*), Br(K_L to
pi^0 nu barnu), Br(K_L to pi^0e^+e^-)_{dir} and on tan(beta) in the Two Higgs

CLIC: a Two-Beam Multi-TeV Linear Collider
The CLIC study of a high-energy (0.5 - 5 TeV), high-luminosity (1034 - 1035 cm-2 sec-1) e+e- linear collider is presented. Beam acceleration using high frequency (30 GHz) normal-conducting structures operating at high accelerating fields (150 MV/m) significantly reduces the length and, in consequence, the cost of the linac. Using parameters derived from general scaling laws for linear colliders, the beam stability is shown to be similar to lower frequency designs in spite of the strong wake-field dependency on frequency. A new cost-effective and efficient drive beam generation scheme for RF power production by the so-called "Two-Beam Acceleration" method is described. It uses a thermionic gun and a fully-loaded normal-conducting linac operating at low frequency (937 MHz) to generate and accelerate the drive beam bunches, and RF multiplication by funnelling in compressor rings to produce the desired bunch structure. Recent 30 GHz hardware developments and CLIC Test Facility (CTF) results are described
Metarhodopsin control by arrestin, light-filtering screening pigments, and visual pigment turnover in invertebrate microvillar photoreceptors
The visual pigments of most invertebrate photoreceptors have two thermostable photo-interconvertible states, the ground state rhodopsin and photo-activated metarhodopsin, which triggers the phototransduction cascade until it binds arrestin. The ratio of the two states in photoequilibrium is determined by their absorbance spectra and the effective spectral distribution of illumination. Calculations indicate that metarhodopsin levels in fly photoreceptors are maintained below ~35% in normal diurnal environments, due to the combination of a blue-green rhodopsin, an orange-absorbing metarhodopsin and red transparent screening pigments. Slow metarhodopsin degradation and rhodopsin regeneration processes further subserve visual pigment maintenance. In most insect eyes, where the majority of photoreceptors have green-absorbing rhodopsins and blue-absorbing metarhodopsins, natural illuminants are predicted to create metarhodopsin levels greater than 60% at high intensities. However, fast metarhodopsin decay and rhodopsin regeneration also play an important role in controlling metarhodopsin in green receptors, resulting in a high rhodopsin content at low light intensities and a reduced overall visual pigment content in bright light. A simple model for the visual pigmentâarrestin cycle is used to illustrate the dependence of the visual pigment population states on light intensity, arrestin levels and pigment turnover
A Systematic Review of the Current Evidence from Randomised Controlled Trials on the Impact of Medication Optimisation or Pharmacological Interventions on Quantitative Measures of Cognitive Function in Geriatric Patients
Publisher Copyright: © 2022, The Author(s).Background: Cognitive decline is common in older people. Numerous studies point to the detrimental impact of polypharmacy and inappropriate medication on older peopleâs cognitive function. Here we aim to systematically review evidence on the impact of medication optimisation and drug interventions on cognitive function in older adults. Methods: A systematic review was performed using MEDLINE and Web of Science on May 2021. Only randomised controlled trials (RCTs) addressing the impact of medication optimisation or pharmacological interventions on quantitative measures of cognitive function in older adults (aged > 65 years) were included. Single-drug interventions (e.g., on drugs for dementia) were excluded. The quality of the studies was assessed by using the Jadad score. Results: Thirteen studies met the inclusion criteria. In five studies a positive impact of the intervention on metric measures of cognitive function was observed. Only one study showed a significant improvement of cognitive function by medication optimisation. The remaining four positive studies tested methylphenidate, selective oestrogen receptor modulators, folic acid and antipsychotics. The mean Jadad score was low (2.7). Conclusion: This systematic review identified a small number of heterogenous RCTs investigating the impact of medication optimisation or pharmacological interventions on cognitive function. Five trials showed a positive impact on at least one aspect of cognitive function, with comprehensive medication optimisation not being more successful than focused drug interventions. More prospective trials are needed to specifically assess ways of limiting the negative impact of certain medication in particular and polypharmacy in general on cognitive function in older patients.Peer reviewe
Unraveling hadron structure with generalized parton distributions
The generalized parton distributions, introduced nearly a decade ago, have
emerged as a universal tool to describe hadrons in terms of quark and gluonic
degrees of freedom. They combine the features of form factors, parton densities
and distribution amplitudes--the functions used for a long time in studies of
hadronic structure. Generalized parton distributions are analogous to the
phase-space Wigner quasi-probability function of non-relativistic quantum
mechanics which encodes full information on a quantum-mechanical system. We
give an extensive review of main achievements in the development of this
formalism. We discuss physical interpretation and basic properties of
generalized parton distributions, their modeling and QCD evolution in the
leading and next-to-leading orders. We describe how these functions enter a
wide class of exclusive reactions, such as electro- and photo-production of
photons, lepton pairs, or mesons. The theory of these processes requires and
implies full control over diverse corrections and thus we outline the progress
in handling higher-order and higher-twist effects. We catalogue corresponding
results and present diverse techniques for their derivations. Subsequently, we
address observables that are sensitive to different characteristics of the
nucleon structure in terms of generalized parton distributions. The ultimate
goal of the GPD approach is to provide a three-dimensional spatial picture of
the nucleon, direct measurement of the quark orbital angular momentum, and
various inter- and multi-parton correlations.Comment: 370 pages, 62 figures; Dedicated to Anatoly V. Efremov on occasion of
