The objective of the thesis was to analyze the novel of Robert Musil "The Confusions of Young Törless" in context of behaviour models and the role of sensuality in the development of adolescent personality from the viewpoint of rational reasoning of own thinking processes. The analysis stresses the importance of the motive of young man's solitude, furthermore the motive of violence, the role of sensual cognition in adolescence as well as the role of these factors during determination of preferred relationships that might, however, come into contrast with the contemporary taboos and become "forbidden". "The Confusions" of the main character may so be structured and interpreted on several levels. Adverse selection and risk selection in unregulated health insurance markets: Empirical evidence from South Africa's medical schemes.

Health insurance arrangements developed in various social settings as a means of pooling health risks and health resources in order to protect members' income against unpredictable health costs but also in order to guarantee their access to health care. Problems of unregulated health insurance markets, like adverse selection and risk selection, are frequently discussed in academic and political circles in the context of either inefficiency or inequity. Though interest in regulation as a health sector reform instrument is growing, empirical studies of unregulated health insurance markets are still rare, particularly, in low and middle-income country settings. This thesis contributes to the body of research and literature that attempts to identify empirical evidence for adverse selection and risk selection. It aims to examine the following research question: Are unregulated health insurance markets characterised by adverse selection and/ or risk selection and do they thereby create inefficiency or inequity. The objective is to demonstrate empirically whether or not these markets experience selection processes. First, this thesis derives a group method for empirical investigations into adverse selection and risk selection from which testable hypotheses can be derived. Second, this method is applied to case study data from a middle-income country. Longitudinal panel data is analysed, describing South Africa's health insurance market of medical schemes in the context of its post-deregulation experience over the four-year period 1995-1998, after premia risk-rating was legalised. The interpretation of the empirical results leads to three main findings. First, intense competition in the contested health insurance market causes favourable risk selection of low risks into and out of medical scheme plans. Second, unfavourable selection by medical scheme plans in the form of dumping high risks can be concluded. Third, there is no evidence for adverse selection and the typical adverse selection cycle cannot be observed. Exploring the policy relevance of the results, it is concluded that the effects of less health insurance regulation, in the context of middle-income country health sector reforms, conflicts with the common health policy objective of equity. More competition and efficiency comes at the price of less equity in health care access for the poor and sick, confirming the known efficiency-equity trade-off

Distances for Weighted Transition Systems: Games and Properties

    Get PDF
We develop a general framework for reasoning about distances between transition systems with quantitative information. Taking as starting point an arbitrary distance on system traces, we show how this leads to natural definitions of a linear and a branching distance on states of such a transition system. We show that our framework generalizes and unifies a large variety of previously considered system distances, and we develop some general properties of our distances. We also show that if the trace distance admits a recursive characterization, then the corresponding branching distance can be obtained as a least fixed point to a similar recursive characterization. The central tool in our work is a theory of infinite path-building games with quantitative objectives.Comment: In Proceedings QAPL 2011, arXiv:1107.074

Associated Charm Production in Neutrino-Nucleus Interactions

In this paper a search for associated charm production both in neutral and charged current ν\nu-nucleus interactions is presented. The improvement of automatic scanning systems in the {CHORUS} experiment allows an efficient search to be performed in emulsion for short-lived particles. Hence a search for rare processes, like the associated charm production, becomes possible through the observation of the double charm-decay topology with a very low background. About 130,000 ν\nu interactions located in the emulsion target have been analysed. Three events with two charm decays have been observed in the neutral-current sample with an estimated background of 0.18±\pm0.05. The relative rate of the associated charm cross-section in deep inelastic ν\nu interactions, σ(ccˉν)/σNCDIS=(3.622.42+2.95(stat)±0.54(syst))×103\sigma(c\bar{c}\nu)/\sigma_\mathrm{NC}^\mathrm{DIS}= (3.62^{+2.95}_{-2.42}({stat})\pm 0.54({syst}))\times 10^{-3} has been measured. One event with two charm decays has been observed in charged-current νμ\nu_\mu interactions with an estimated background of 0.18±\pm0.06 and the upper limit on associated charm production in charged-current interactions at 90% C.L. has been found to be σ(ccˉμ)/σCC<9.69×104\sigma (c\bar{c} \mu^-)/\sigma_\mathrm{CC} < 9.69 \times 10^{-4}.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure

Organization and management of ATLAS software releases

    No full text
International audienceATLAS is one of the largest collaborations ever undertaken in the physical sciences. This paper explains how the software infrastructure is organized to manage collaborative code development by around 300 developers with varying degrees of expertise, situated in 30 different countries. We will describe how the succeeding releases of the software are built, validated and subsequently deployed to remote sites. Several software management tools have been used, the majority of which are not ATLAS specific; we will show how they have been integrated. ATLAS offline software currently consists of about 2 MSLOC contained in 6800 C++ classes, organized in almost 1000 packages

Search for displaced vertices arising from decays of new heavy particles in 7 TeV pp collisions at ATLAS

    Get PDF
We present the results of a search for new, heavy particles that decay at a significant distance from their production point into a final state containing charged hadrons in association with a high-momentum muon. The search is conducted in a pp-collision data sample with a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV and an integrated luminosity of 33 pb^-1 collected in 2010 by the ATLAS detector operating at the Large Hadron Collider. Production of such particles is expected in various scenarios of physics beyond the standard model. We observe no signal and place limits on the production cross-section of supersymmetric particles in an R-parity-violating scenario as a function of the neutralino lifetime. Limits are presented for different squark and neutralino masses, enabling extension of the limits to a variety of other models.Comment: 8 pages plus author list (20 pages total), 8 figures, 1 table, final version to appear in Physics Letters
