Australian Professional Business Services: Implications of Growth
It seems to be commonly assumed that the growth of the professional services industries has been grown largely as a result of outsourcing. The authors briefly explore this question using input-output data for a number of OECD countries, focusing on Australia to address the issue of changing sectoral use patterns of professional services. The implications of the findings are presented within an institutional framework that notes the historical bias against business service sectors

The vertical Van de Graaff telemetry system
With the push on to take the machine to higher and higher potentials, it quickly became apparent that the existing telemetry system was simply not acceptable. Therefore, in 1988 a new multichannel telemetry system was specified for bid. The new system was to provide a control interface for the operator in the control room connected via fiber optic cables to three remote I/O devices located on two different (electrically isolated) decks on the ion terminal. The system was received in early 1989 and is based on the General Electric FANUC Division's Series One Plus programmable controller (GE FANUC was recently bought out by Texas Instruments who now offer the Series 305 programmable controller which is the same as GE's Series One Plus). A framework for the local information dynamics of distributed computation in complex systems
The nature of distributed computation has often been described in terms of
the component operations of universal computation: information storage,
transfer and modification. We review the first complete framework that
quantifies each of these individual information dynamics on a local scale
within a system, and describes the manner in which they interact to create
non-trivial computation where "the whole is greater than the sum of the parts".
We describe the application of the framework to cellular automata, a simple yet
powerful model of distributed computation. This is an important application,
because the framework is the first to provide quantitative evidence for several
important conjectures about distributed computation in cellular automata: that
blinkers embody information storage, particles are information transfer agents,
and particle collisions are information modification events. The framework is
also shown to contrast the computations conducted by several well-known
cellular automata, highlighting the importance of information coherence in
complex computation. The results reviewed here provide important quantitative
insights into the fundamental nature of distributed computation and the
dynamics of complex systems, as well as impetus for the framework to be applied
to the analysis and design of other systems.Comment: 44 pages, 8 figure

Quasiparticle tunneling spectroscopy of high {Tc} cuprates
Superconductor-insulator-normal metal (SIN) and superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) tunnel junctions provide important information on pairing state symmetry and mechanism. Measurements of such junctions on high {Tc} superconductors (HTS) are reported using mechanical point contacts, which generally display the optimum characteristics that can be obtained from HTS native-surface tunnel barriers. New tunneling data on the infinite-layer cuprate, Sr{sub 1{minus}x}Nd{sub x}CuO{sub 2} are reported which show a remarkable similarity to another electron-doped cuprate, Nd{sub 1.85}Ce{sub 0.85}CuO{sub 4}. In particular, there is a strong, asymmetric linear background conductance that is indicative of inelastic tunneling from a continuum of states. A discussion is given of the anomalous dip feature found in the tunneling and photoemission data on BSCCO 2212. It is shown that a similar feature is found in many cuprate junctions and that this dip scales with the gap energy over a wide range. New data on the single-layer, tetragonal cuprate, Tl{sub 2}Ba{sub 2}CuO{sub 6} (Tl2201) are presented and discussed in light of recent published results on the similar compound HgBa{sub 2}CuO{sub 4} (Hg1201). The HG1201 data display a low, flat sub-gap tunneling conductance which is consistent with a BCS density of states whereas the T12201 data display a cusp-like feature at zero bias which is more consistent with d{sub x}2-{sub y}2 symmetry

A high repetition rate beam profile monitor
A high repetition rate beam profile monitor is needed to measure the momentum distribution of each bunch in a 200 bunch train at the Brookhaven Accelerator Test Facility. We have designed a monitor using secondary emission from a microstrip delay line. The delay line converts position information into discrete time delays synchronous with the sampling rate of a fast transient digitizer. We present the results of initial electrical testing here
Detector Description and Performance for the First Coincidence Observations between LIGO and GEO
For 17 days in August and September 2002, the LIGO and GEO interferometer
gravitational wave detectors were operated in coincidence to produce their
first data for scientific analysis. Although the detectors were still far from
their design sensitivity levels, the data can be used to place better upper
limits on the flux of gravitational waves incident on the earth than previous
direct measurements. This paper describes the instruments and the data in some

Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in √s = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector
A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results
