Robòtica a l'escola. Canviar el paradigma educatiu i el mètode d'aprenentatge
L'article presenta l'experiència
d'introducció de la robòtica dins la
planificaciĂł curricular d'una escola de
primĂ ria a travĂŠs d'un procĂŠs progressiu i
graduat. La realitat dels resultats obtinguts
mostra, a travĂŠs dels criteris emesos pel
propi alumnat, el benefici educatiu que
representa l'ús de la robòtica com a
element generador de motivació i interès
per l'aprenentatge. Metodològicament es
treballa des d'una perspectiva de treball
cooperatiu, mètode de projectes i
resoluciĂł de problemes amb un fort
component de contingut interdisciplinari.
En aquest marc es constata la gran
transcendència i necessitat del treball
competencial en l'Ă mbit matemĂ tic.The article describes the experience of
progressively introducing robotics into the
curriculumplanning of a primary school. The
results obtained, according to the criteria of
the students themselves, show the
educational benefit of the use of robotics as
an element generatingmotivation and
interest in learning.Methodologically
speaking, a teamwork approach is adopted,
a project and problem-solvingmethod
containing a strong component of
interdisciplinary content.Within this

importance and the need of
competency-based work in the field of

Large-Scale Assessment of Mediterranean Marine Protected Areas Effects on Fish Assemblages
Marine protected areas (MPAs) were acknowledged globally as effective tools to mitigate the threats to oceans caused by fishing. Several studies assessed the effectiveness of individual MPAs in protecting fish assemblages, but regional assessments of multiple MPAs are scarce. Moreover, empirical evidence on the role of MPAs in contrasting the propagation of non-indigenous-species (NIS) and thermophilic species (ThS) is missing. We simultaneously investigated here the role of MPAs in reversing the effects of overfishing and in limiting the spread of NIS and ThS. The Mediterranean Sea was selected as study area as it is a region where 1) MPAs are numerous, 2) fishing has affected species and ecosystems, and 3) the arrival of NIS and the northward expansion of ThS took place. Fish surveys were done in well-enforced no-take MPAs (HP), partially-protected MPAs (IP) and fished areas (F) at 30 locations across the Mediterranean. Significantly higher fish biomass was found in HP compared to IP MPAs and F. Along a recovery trajectory from F to HP MPAs, IP were similar to F, showing that just well enforced MPAs triggers an effective recovery. Within HP MPAs, trophic structure of fish assemblages resembled a top-heavy biomass pyramid. Although the functional structure of fish assemblages was consistent among HP MPAs, species driving the recovery in HP MPAs differed among locations: this suggests that the recovery trajectories in HP MPAs are likely to be functionally similar (i.e., represented by predictable changes in trophic groups, especially fish predators), but the specific composition of the resulting assemblages may depend on local conditions. Our study did not show any effect of MPAs on NIS and ThS. These results may help provide more robust expectations, at proper regional scale, about the effects of new MPAs that may be established in the Mediterranean Sea and other ecoregions worldwide
New FOCUS results on charm mixing and CP violation
We present a summary of recent results on CP violation and mixing in the
charm quark sector based on a high statistics sample collected by
photoproduction experiment FOCUS (E831 at Fermilab). We have measured the
difference in lifetimes for the decays: and . This translates into a measurement of the mixing parameter in
the \d0d0 system, under the assumptions that is an equal mixture of
CP odd and CP even eigenstates, and CP violation is negligible in the neutral
charm meson system. We verified the latter assumption by searching for a CP
violating asymmetry in the Cabibbo suppressed decay modes , and . We show preliminary

The structure of Mediterranean rocky reef ecosystems across environmental and human gradients, and conservation implications
Historical exploitation of the Mediterranean Sea and the absence of rigorous baselines makes it difficult to evaluate the current health of the marine ecosystems and the efficacy of conservation actions at the ecosystem level. Here we establish the first current baseline and gradient of ecosystem structure of nearshore rocky reefs at the Mediterranean scale. We conducted underwater surveys in 14 marine protected areas and 18 open access sites across the Mediterranean, and across a 31-fold range of fish biomass (from 3.8 to 118 g m22). Our data showed remarkable variation in the structure of rocky reef ecosystems. Multivariate analysis showed three alternative community states: (1) large fish biomass and reefs dominated by non-canopy algae, (2) lower fish biomass but abundant native algal canopies and suspension feeders, and (3) low fish biomass and extensive barrens, with areas covered by turf algae. Our results suggest that the healthiest shallow rocky reef ecosystems in the Mediterranean have both large fish and algal biomass. Protection level and primary production were the only variables significantly correlated to community biomass structure. Fish biomass was significantly larger in well-enforced no-take marine reserves, but there were no significant differences between multi-use marine protected areas (which allow some fishing) and open access areas at the regional scale. The gradients reported here represent a trajectory of degradation that can be used to assess the health of any similar habitat in the Mediterranean, and to evaluate the efficacy of marine protected areas

The F4/AS01B HIV-1 Vaccine Candidate Is Safe and Immunogenic, But Does Not Show Viral Efficacy in Antiretroviral Therapy-Naive, HIV-1-Infected Adults: A Randomized Controlled Trial
The impact of the investigational human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) F4/AS01(B) vaccine on HIV-1 viral load (VL) was evaluated in antiretroviral therapy (ART)-naive HIV-1 infected adults.This phase IIb, observer-blind study (NCT01218113), included ART-naive HIV-1 infected adults aged 18 to 55 years. Participants were randomized to receive 2 (F4/AS01(B)_2 group, N=64) or 3 (F4/AS01(B)_3 group, N=62) doses of F4/AS01(B) or placebo (control group, N=64) at weeks 0, 4, and 28. Efficacy (HIV-1 VL, CD4(+) T-cell count, ART initiation, and HIV-related clinical events), safety, and immunogenicity (antibody and T-cell responses) were evaluated during 48 weeks.At week 48, based on a mixed model, no statistically significant difference in HIV-1 VL change from baseline was demonstrated between F4/AS01(B)_2 and control group (0.073 log(10)copies/mL [97.5% confidence interval (CI): -0.088; 0.235]), or F4/AS01(B)_3 and control group (-0.096 log(10)copies/mL [97.5% CI: -0.257; 0.065]). No differences between groups were observed in HIV-1 VL change, CD4(+) T-cell count, ART initiation, or HIV-related clinical events at intermediate timepoints. Among F4/AS01(B) recipients, the most frequent solicited symptoms were pain at injection site (252/300 doses), fatigue (137/300 doses), myalgia (105/300 doses), and headache (90/300 doses). Twelve serious adverse events were reported in 6 participants; 1 was considered vaccine-related (F4/AS01(B)_2 group: angioedema). F4/AS01(B) induced polyfunctional F4-specific CD4(+) T-cells, but had no significant impact on F4-specific CD8(+) T-cell and anti-F4 antibody levels.F4/AS01(B) had a clinically acceptable safety profile, induced F4-specific CD4(+) T-cell responses, but did not reduce HIV-1 VL, impact CD4(+) T-cells count, delay ART initiation, or prevent HIV-1 related clinical events
Performance of the CMS Cathode Strip Chambers with Cosmic Rays
The Cathode Strip Chambers (CSCs) constitute the primary muon tracking device
in the CMS endcaps. Their performance has been evaluated using data taken
during a cosmic ray run in fall 2008. Measured noise levels are low, with the
number of noisy channels well below 1%. Coordinate resolution was measured for
all types of chambers, and fall in the range 47 microns to 243 microns. The
efficiencies for local charged track triggers, for hit and for segments
reconstruction were measured, and are above 99%. The timing resolution per
layer is approximately 5 ns
Extreme events are more likely to affect the breeding success of lesser kestrels than average climate change
Climate change is predicted to severely impact interactions between prey, predators and habitats. In
Southern Europe, within the Mediterranean climate, herbaceous vegetation achieves its maximum
growth in middle spring followed by a three-month dry summer, limiting prey availability for
insectivorous birds. Lesser kestrels (Falco naumanni) breed in a time-window that matches the
nestling-rearing period with the peak abundance of grasshoppers and forecasted climate change may
impact reproductive success through changes in prey availability and abundance. We used Normalised
Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) as a surrogate of habitat quality and prey availability to investigate
the impacts of forecasted climate change and extreme climatic events on lesser kestrel breeding
performance. First, using 14 years of data from 15 colonies in Southwestern Iberia, we linked fledging
success and climatic variables with NDVI, and secondly, based on these relationships and according
to climatic scenarios for 2050 and 2070, forecasted NDVI and fledging success. Finally, we evaluated
how fledging success was influenced by drought events since 2004. Despite predicting a decrease in
vegetation greenness in lesser kestrel foraging areas during spring, we found no impacts of predicted
gradual rise in temperature and decline in precipitation on their fledging success. Notwithstanding, we
found a decrease of 12% in offspring survival associated with drought events, suggesting that a higher
frequency of droughts might, in the future, jeopardize the recent recovery of the European population.
Here, we show that extreme events, such as droughts, can have more significant impacts on species
than gradual climatic changes, especially in regions like the Mediterranean Basin, a biodiversity and

Performance and Operation of the CMS Electromagnetic Calorimeter
The operation and general performance of the CMS electromagnetic calorimeter
using cosmic-ray muons are described. These muons were recorded after the
closure of the CMS detector in late 2008. The calorimeter is made of lead
tungstate crystals and the overall status of the 75848 channels corresponding
to the barrel and endcap detectors is reported. The stability of crucial
operational parameters, such as high voltage, temperature and electronic noise,
is summarised and the performance of the light monitoring system is presented
The German Music@Home: Validation of a questionnaire measuring at home musical exposure and interaction of young children.
The present study introduces the German version of the original version of the Music@Home questionnaire developed in the UK, which systematically evaluates musical engagement in the home environment of young children. Two versions are available, an Infant version for children aged three to 23 months and a Preschool version for children aged two to five and a half years. For the present study, the original Music@Home questionnaire was translated from English into German and 656 caregivers completed the questionnaire online. A confirmatory factor analysis showed moderate to high fit indices for both versions, confirming the factor structure of the original questionnaire. Also, the reliability coefficients for the subscales (Parental beliefs, Child engagement with music, Parent initiation of singing, Parent initiation of music-making for the Infant version and Parental beliefs, Child engagement with music, Parent initiation of music behavior and Breadth of musical exposure for the Preschool version) ranged from moderate to high fits. Furthermore, the test-retest analysis (N = 392) revealed high correlations for the general factor and all subscales confirming their internal reliability. Additionally, we included language questionnaires for children of two and three years of age. Results showed that higher scores on the Music@Home questionnaire were moderately associated with better language skills in two-year-olds (N = 118). In sum, the study presents the validated German Music@Home questionnaire, which shows good psychometric properties. The two versions of the questionnaire are available for use in order to assess home musical engagement of young children, which could be of interest in many areas of developmental research
