Kaehler Metrics and Yukawa Couplings in Magnetized Brane Models
Using the field theoretical approach introduced by Cremades, Ibanez and
Marchesano for describing open strings attached to D9 branes having different
magnetizations, we give a procedure for determining the Kaehler metrics of
those open strings in toroidal compactifications.Comment: 33 pages, minor correction
Speckle-pattern visibility of light transmitted through a multimode optical fiber
We show that the reduction in visibility of the speckle pattern obtained from laser light that has been passed through a step-index light guide can be found from a knowledge of the model dispersion of the guide, and the bandwidth of the laser beam
The Generalized Green-Schwarz Mechanism for Type IIB Orientifolds with D3- and D7-Branes
In this paper, we work out in detail the tadpole cancellation conditions as
well as the generalized Green-Schwarz mechanism for type IIB orientifold
compactifications with D3- and D7-branes. We find that not only the well-known
D3- and D7-tadpole conditions have to be satisfied, but in general also the
vanishing of the induced D5-brane charges leads to a non-trivial constraint. In
fact, for the case the latter condition is important for
the cancellation of chiral anomalies. We also extend our analysis by including
D9- as well as D5-branes and determine the rules for computing the chiral
spectrum of the combined system.Comment: 33+7 pages; 2 figures; v2: references added; v3: published versio
Pre - Inflationary Clues from String Theory ?
"Brane supersymmetry breaking" occurs in String Theory when the only
available combinations of D-branes and orientifolds are not mutually BPS and
yet do not introduce tree-level tachyon instabilities. It is characterized by
the emergence of a steep exponential potential, and thus by the absence of
maximally symmetric vacua. The corresponding low-energy supergravity admits
intriguing spatially-flat cosmological solutions where a scalar field is forced
to climb up toward the steep potential after an initial singularity, and
additional milder terms can inject an inflationary phase during the ensuing
descent. We show that, in the resulting power spectra of scalar perturbations,
an infrared suppression is typically followed by a pre-inflationary peak that
reflects the end of the climbing phase and can lie well apart from the
approximately scale invariant profile. A first look at WMAP9 raw data shows
that, while the chi^2 fits for the low-l CMB angular power spectrum are clearly
compatible with an almost scale invariant behavior, they display nonetheless an
eye-catching preference for this type of setting within a perturbative string
regime.Comment: 34 pages, LaTeX, 16 eps figures. Relative displacement in fig. 14 and

First Observation of Coherent Production in Neutrino Nucleus Interactions with 2 GeV
The MiniBooNE experiment at Fermilab has amassed the largest sample to date
of s produced in neutral current (NC) neutrino-nucleus interactions at
low energy. This paper reports a measurement of the momentum distribution of
s produced in mineral oil (CH) and the first observation of coherent
production below 2 GeV. In the forward direction, the yield of events
observed above the expectation for resonant production is attributed primarily
to coherent production off carbon, but may also include a small contribution
from diffractive production on hydrogen. Integrated over the MiniBooNE neutrino
flux, the sum of the NC coherent and diffractive modes is found to be (19.5
1.1 (stat) 2.5 (sys))% of all exclusive NC production at
MiniBooNE. These measurements are of immediate utility because they quantify an
important background to MiniBooNE's search for
oscillations.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Lett.
Preembryo Personhood: An Assessment of the President’s Council Arguments
The President’s Council on Bioethics has addressed the moral status of human preembryos in its reports on stem cell research and human therapeutic cloning. Although the Council has been criticized for being hand-picked to favor the right-to-life viewpoint concerning human preembryos, it has embraced the idea that the right-to-life position should be defended in secular terms. This is an important feature of the Council’s work, and it demonstrates a recognition of the need for genuine engagement between opposing sides in the debate over stem cell research. To promote this engagement, the Council has stated in secular terms several arguments for the personhood of human preembryos. This essay presents and critiques those arguments, and it concludes that they are unsuccessful. If the best arguments in support of the personhood of human preembryos have been presented by the Council, then there are no reasonable secular arguments in support of that view

A note on ROC analysis and non-parametric estimate of sensitivity
In the signal detection paradigm, the non-parametric index of sensitivity A ′, as first introduced by Pollack and Norman (1964), is a popular alternative to the more traditional d ′ measure of sensitivity. Smith (1995) clarified a confusion about the interpretation of A ′ in relation to the area beneath proper receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, and provided a formula (which he called A ′′) for this commonly held interpretation. However, he made an error in his calculations. Here, we rectify this error by providing the correct formula (which we call A ) and compare the discrepancy that would have resulted. The corresponding measure for bias b is also provided. Since all such calculations apply to “proper” ROC curves with non-decreasing slopes, we also prove, as a separate result, the slope-monotonicity of ROC curves generated by likelihood-ratio criterion.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/45761/1/11336_2003_Article_1119.pd
Measurement of the polarisation of W bosons produced with large transverse momentum in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS experiment
This paper describes an analysis of the angular distribution of W->enu and
W->munu decays, using data from pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV recorded with
the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2010, corresponding to an integrated
luminosity of about 35 pb^-1. Using the decay lepton transverse momentum and
the missing transverse energy, the W decay angular distribution projected onto
the transverse plane is obtained and analysed in terms of helicity fractions
f0, fL and fR over two ranges of W transverse momentum (ptw): 35 < ptw < 50 GeV
and ptw > 50 GeV. Good agreement is found with theoretical predictions. For ptw
> 50 GeV, the values of f0 and fL-fR, averaged over charge and lepton flavour,
are measured to be : f0 = 0.127 +/- 0.030 +/- 0.108 and fL-fR = 0.252 +/- 0.017
+/- 0.030, where the first uncertainties are statistical, and the second
include all systematic effects.Comment: 19 pages plus author list (34 pages total), 9 figures, 11 tables,

Observation of a new chi_b state in radiative transitions to Upsilon(1S) and Upsilon(2S) at ATLAS
The chi_b(nP) quarkonium states are produced in proton-proton collisions at
the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV and recorded by the ATLAS
detector. Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.4
fb^-1, these states are reconstructed through their radiative decays to
Upsilon(1S,2S) with Upsilon->mu+mu-. In addition to the mass peaks
corresponding to the decay modes chi_b(1P,2P)->Upsilon(1S)gamma, a new
structure centered at a mass of 10.530+/-0.005 (stat.)+/-0.009 (syst.) GeV is
also observed, in both the Upsilon(1S)gamma and Upsilon(2S)gamma decay modes.
This is interpreted as the chi_b(3P) system.Comment: 5 pages plus author list (18 pages total), 2 figures, 1 table,
