Flux Jumping and a Bulk-to-Granular Transition in the Magnetization of a Compacted and Sintered MgB2 Superconductor
The recent discovery of intermediate-temperature superconductivity (ITC) in
MgB2 by Akimitsu et al. and its almost simultaneous explanation in terms of a
hole-carrier-based pairing mechanism by Hirsch, has triggered an avalanche of
studies of its structural, magnetic and transport properties. As a further
contribution to the field we report the results of field (H) and temperature
(T) dependent magnetization (M) measurements of a pellet of uniform,
large-grain sintered MgB2. We show that at low temperatures the size of the
pellet and its critical current density, Jc(H) - i.e. its M(H) - ensure low
field flux jumping, which of course ceases when M(H) drops below a critical
value. With further increase of H and T the individual grains decouple and the
M(H) loops drop to lower lying branches, unresolved in the usual full M(H)
representation. After taking into account the sample size and grain size,
respectively, the bulk sample and the grains were deduced to exhibit the same
magnetically determined Jc s (e.g. 105 A/cm2, 20 K, 0T) and hence that for each
temperature of measurement Jc(H) decreased monotonically with H over the entire

In search of virus carriers of the 1988 and 2002 phocine distemper virus outbreaks in European harbour seals
European harbour seal (Phoca vitulina) populations decreased substantially during the phocine distemper virus (PDV) outbreaks of 1988 and 2002. Different hypotheses have stated that various seals and terrestrial carnivore species might be the source of infection. To further analyse these hypotheses, grey (Halichoerus grypus) and ringed (Phoca hispida) seals, polar bears (Ursus maritimus) and minks (Mustela lutreola) were sampled from the North Sea and East Greenland coasts between 1988 and 2004 and investigated by RT-PCR using a panmorbillivirus primer pair. Economic Fluctuations and Diffusion
Stock price changes occur through transactions, just as diffusion in physical
systems occurs through molecular collisions. We systematically explore this
analogy and quantify the relation between trading activity - measured by the
number of transactions - and the price change ,
for a given stock, over a time interval . To this end, we
analyze a database documenting every transaction for 1000 US stocks over the
two-year period 1994-1995. We find that price movements are equivalent to a
complex variant of diffusion, where the diffusion coefficient fluctuates
drastically in time. We relate the analog of the diffusion coefficient to two
microscopic quantities: (i) the number of transactions in
, which is the analog of the number of collisions and (ii) the local
variance of the price changes for all transactions in , which is the analog of the local mean square displacement between
collisions. We study the distributions of both and , and find that they display power-law tails. Further, we find that
displays long-range power-law correlations in time, whereas
does not. Our results are consistent with the interpretation
that the pronounced tails of the distribution of w_{\Delta t}|

Spinless particle in rapidly fluctuating random magnetic field
We study a two-dimensional spinless particle in a disordered gaussian
magnetic field with short time fluctuations, by means of the evolution equation
for the density matrix ; in this
description the two coordinates are associated with the retarded and advanced
paths respectively. The static part of the vector potential correlator is
assumed to grow with distance with a power ; the case corresponds to
a -correlated magnetic field, and to free massless field. The
value separates two different regimes, diffusion and logarithmic growth
respectively. When the baricentric coordinate diffuses with a coefficient proportional to , where
is the relative coordinate: . As the
correlator of the magnetic field is a power of distance with positive exponent;
then the coefficient scales as .
The density matrix is a function of and ,and its width in

The Dependence of the Superconducting Transition Temperature of Organic Molecular Crystals on Intrinsically Non-Magnetic Disorder: a Signature of either Unconventional Superconductivity or Novel Local Magnetic Moment Formation
We give a theoretical analysis of published experimental studies of the
effects of impurities and disorder on the superconducting transition
temperature, T_c, of the organic molecular crystals kappa-ET_2X and beta-ET_2X
(where ET is bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene and X is an anion eg I_3).
The Abrikosov-Gorkov (AG) formula describes the suppression of T_c both by
magnetic impurities in singlet superconductors, including s-wave
superconductors and by non-magnetic impurities in a non-s-wave superconductor.
We show that various sources of disorder lead to the suppression of T_c as
described by the AG formula. This is confirmed by the excellent fit to the
data, the fact that these materials are in the clean limit and the excellent
agreement between the value of the interlayer hopping integral, t_perp,
calculated from this fit and the value of t_perp found from angular-dependant
magnetoresistance and quantum oscillation experiments. If the disorder is, as
seems most likely, non-magnetic then the pairing state cannot be s-wave. We
show that the cooling rate dependence of the magnetisation is inconsistent with
paramagnetic impurities. Triplet pairing is ruled out by several experiments.
If the disorder is non-magnetic then this implies that l>=2, in which case
Occam's razor suggests that d-wave pairing is realised. Given the proximity of
these materials to an antiferromagnetic Mott transition, it is possible that
the disorder leads to the formation of local magnetic moments via some novel
mechanism. Thus we conclude that either kappa-ET_2X and beta-ET_2X are d-wave
superconductors or else they display a novel mechanism for the formation of
localised moments. We suggest systematic experiments to differentiate between

Measurement of the Charged Multiplicities in b, c and Light Quark Events from Z0 Decays
Average charged multiplicities have been measured separately in , and
light quark () events from decays measured in the SLD experiment.
Impact parameters of charged tracks were used to select enriched samples of
and light quark events, and reconstructed charmed mesons were used to select
quark events. We measured the charged multiplicities:
,
, from
which we derived the differences between the total average charged
multiplicities of or quark events and light quark events: and . We compared
these measurements with those at lower center-of-mass energies and with
perturbative QCD predictions. These combined results are in agreement with the
QCD expectations and disfavor the hypothesis of flavor-independent

Measurement of the B0-anti-B0-Oscillation Frequency with Inclusive Dilepton Events
The - oscillation frequency has been measured with a sample of
23 million \B\bar B pairs collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II
asymmetric B Factory at SLAC. In this sample, we select events in which both B
mesons decay semileptonically and use the charge of the leptons to identify the
flavor of each B meson. A simultaneous fit to the decay time difference

Measurement of the polarisation of W bosons produced with large transverse momentum in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS experiment
This paper describes an analysis of the angular distribution of W->enu and
W->munu decays, using data from pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV recorded with
the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2010, corresponding to an integrated
luminosity of about 35 pb^-1. Using the decay lepton transverse momentum and
the missing transverse energy, the W decay angular distribution projected onto
the transverse plane is obtained and analysed in terms of helicity fractions
f0, fL and fR over two ranges of W transverse momentum (ptw): 35 < ptw < 50 GeV
and ptw > 50 GeV. Good agreement is found with theoretical predictions. For ptw
> 50 GeV, the values of f0 and fL-fR, averaged over charge and lepton flavour,
are measured to be : f0 = 0.127 +/- 0.030 +/- 0.108 and fL-fR = 0.252 +/- 0.017
+/- 0.030, where the first uncertainties are statistical, and the second

Observation of a new chi_b state in radiative transitions to Upsilon(1S) and Upsilon(2S) at ATLAS
The chi_b(nP) quarkonium states are produced in proton-proton collisions at
the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV and recorded by the ATLAS
detector. Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.4
fb^-1, these states are reconstructed through their radiative decays to
Upsilon(1S,2S) with Upsilon->mu+mu-. In addition to the mass peaks
corresponding to the decay modes chi_b(1P,2P)->Upsilon(1S)gamma, a new
structure centered at a mass of 10.530+/-0.005 (stat.)+/-0.009 (syst.) GeV is
also observed, in both the Upsilon(1S)gamma and Upsilon(2S)gamma decay modes.
