Constraints on the pMSSM from searches for squarks and gluinos by ATLAS
We study the impact of the jets and missing transverse momentum SUSY analyses
of the ATLAS experiment on the phenomenological MSSM (pMSSM). We investigate
sets of SUSY models with a flat and logarithmic prior in the SUSY mass scale
and a mass range up to 1 and 3 TeV, respectively. These models were found
previously in the study 'Supersymmetry without Prejudice'. Removing models with
long-lived SUSY particles, we show that 99% of 20000 randomly generated pMSSM
model points with a flat prior and 87% for a logarithmic prior are excluded by
the ATLAS results. For models with squarks and gluinos below 600 GeV all models
of the pMSSM grid are excluded. We identify SUSY spectra where the current
ATLAS search strategy is less sensitive and propose extensions to the inclusive
jets search channel
Review for the generalist: evaluation of pediatric hip pain
Hip pathology may cause groin pain, referred thigh or knee pain, refusal to bear weight or altered gait in the absence of pain. A young child with an irritable hip poses a diagnostic challenge. Transient synovitis, one of the most common causes of hip pain in children, must be differentiated from septic arthritis. Hip pain may be caused by conditions unique to the growing pediatric skeleton including Perthes disease, slipped capital femoral epiphysis and apophyseal avulsion fractures of the pelvis. Hip pain may also be referred from low back or pelvic pathology. Evaluation and management requires a thorough history and physical exam, and understanding of the pediatric skeleton. Expression and regulation of type 2A protein phosphatases and alpha4 signalling in cardiac health and hypertrophy
Abstract Cardiac physiology and hypertrophy are regulated
by the phosphorylation status of many proteins, which
is partly controlled by a poorly defined type 2A protein
phosphatase-alpha4 intracellular signalling axis. Quantitative
PCR analysis revealed that mRNA levels of the type
2A catalytic subunits were differentially expressed in H9c2
cardiomyocytes (PP2ACb[PP2ACa[PP4C[PP6C),
NRVM (PP2ACb[PP2ACa = PP4C = PP6C), and
adult rat ventricular myocytes (PP2ACa[
PP2ACb[PP6C[PP4C). Western analysis confirmed
that all type 2A catalytic subunits were expressed in H9c2
cardiomyocytes; however, PP4C protein was absent in
adult myocytes and only detectable following 26S proteasome
inhibition. Short-term knockdown of alpha4 protein
expression attenuated expression of all type 2A catalytic
subunits. Pressure overload-induced left ventricular (LV)
hypertrophy was associated with an increase in both
PP2AC and alpha4 protein expression. Although PP6C
expression was unchanged, expression of PP6C regulatory
subunits (1) Sit4-associated protein 1 (SAP1) and (2)
ankyrin repeat domain (ANKRD) 28 and 44 proteins was
elevated, whereas SAP2 expression was reduced in
hypertrophied LV tissue. Co-immunoprecipitation studies
demonstrated that the interaction between alpha4 and
PP2AC or PP6C subunits was either unchanged or reduced
in hypertrophied LV tissue, respectively. Phosphorylation
status of phospholemman (Ser63 and Ser68) was significantly
increased by knockdown of PP2ACa, PP2ACb, or
PP4C protein expression. DNA damage assessed by histone
H2A.X phosphorylation (cH2A.X) in hypertrophied tissue
remained unchanged. However, exposure of cardiomyocytes
to H2O2 increased levels of cH2A.X which was
unaffected by knockdown of PP6C expression, but was
abolished by the short-term knockdown of alpha4 expression.
This study illustrates the significance and altered
activity of the type 2A protein phosphatase-alpha4 complex
in healthy and hypertrophied myocardium
Nitrogen and Carbon Isotopic Dynamics of Subarctic Soils and Plants in Southern Yukon Territory and its Implications for Paleoecological and Paleodietary Studies
We examine here the carbon and nitrogen isotopic compositions of bulk soils (8 topsoil and 7 subsoils, including two soil profiles) and five different plant parts of 79 C3 plants from two main functional groups: herbs and shrubs/subshrubs, from 18 different locations in grasslands of southern Yukon Territory, Canada (eastern shoreline of Kluane Lake and Whitehorse area). The Kluane Lake region in particular has been identified previously as an analogue for Late Pleistocene eastern Beringia. All topsoils have higher average total nitrogen δ15N and organic carbon δ13C than plants from the same sites with a positive shift occurring with depth in two soil profiles analyzed. All plants analyzed have an average whole plant δ13C of −27.5 ± 1.2 ‰ and foliar δ13C of ±28.0 ± 1.3 ‰, and average whole plant δ15N of −0.3 ± 2.2 ‰ and foliar δ15N of ±0.6 ± 2.7 ‰. Plants analyzed here showed relatively smaller variability in δ13C than δ15N. Their average δ13C after suitable corrections for the Suess effect should be suitable as baseline for interpreting diets of Late Pleistocene herbivores that lived in eastern Beringia. Water availability, nitrogen availability, spacial differences and intra-plant variability are important controls on δ15N of herbaceous plants in the study area. The wider range of δ15N, the more numerous factors that affect nitrogen isotopic composition and their likely differences in the past, however, limit use of the modern N isotopic baseline for vegetation in paleodietary models for such ecosystems. That said, the positive correlation between foliar δ15N and N content shown for the modern plants could support use of plant δ15N as an index for plant N content and therefore forage quality. The modern N isotopic baseline cannot be applied directly to the past, but it is prerequisite to future efforts to detect shifts in N cycling and forage quality since the Late Pleistocene through comparison with fossil plants from the same region
Historical geography II: Digital imaginations
In my second report discussing the state of historical geography, I review some of the ways historical geographers have made use of digital technologies and digital media. I also highlight how digital data, research, and presentation are affecting related humanities disciplines and inspiring their practitioners to engage more fully with geographic concepts of space, place, and cartography. Search for charged Higgs bosons through the violation of lepton universality in t¯t events using pp collision data at ps = 7 TeV with the ATLAS experiment
In several extensions of the Standard Model, the top quark can decay into a
bottom quark and a light charged Higgs boson H+, t → bH+, in addition to the Standard
Model decay t → bW. Since W bosons decay to the three lepton generations equally, while
H+ may predominantly decay into τν, charged Higgs bosons can be searched for using the
violation of lepton universality in top quark decays. The analysis in this paper is based on
4.6 fb−1 of proton-proton collision data at √s = 7 TeV collected by the ATLAS experiment
at the Large Hadron Collider. Signatures containing leptons (e or μ) and/or a hadronically
decaying τ (τhad) are used. Event yield ratios between e+τhad and e+μ, as well as between
μ+τhad and μ+e, final states are measured in the data and compared to predictions from
simulations. This ratio-based method reduces the impact of systematic uncertainties in
the analysis. No significant deviation from the Standard Model predictions is observed.
With the assumption that the branching fraction B(H+ → τν) is 100%, upper limits in
the range 3.2%–4.4% can be placed on the branching fraction B(t → bH+) for charged
Higgs boson masses mH+ in the range 90–140GeV. After combination with results from a
search for charged Higgs bosons in t¯t decays using the τhad+jets final state, upper limits
on B(t → bH+) can be set in the range 0.8%–3.4%, for mH+ in the range 90–160GeV
Evaluation of appendicitis risk prediction models in adults with suspected appendicitis
Background
Appendicitis is the most common general surgical emergency worldwide, but its diagnosis remains challenging. The aim of this study was to determine whether existing risk prediction models can reliably identify patients presenting to hospital in the UK with acute right iliac fossa (RIF) pain who are at low risk of appendicitis.
Methods
A systematic search was completed to identify all existing appendicitis risk prediction models. Models were validated using UK data from an international prospective cohort study that captured consecutive patients aged 16–45 years presenting to hospital with acute RIF in March to June 2017. The main outcome was best achievable model specificity (proportion of patients who did not have appendicitis correctly classified as low risk) whilst maintaining a failure rate below 5 per cent (proportion of patients identified as low risk who actually had appendicitis).
Results
Some 5345 patients across 154 UK hospitals were identified, of which two‐thirds (3613 of 5345, 67·6 per cent) were women. Women were more than twice as likely to undergo surgery with removal of a histologically normal appendix (272 of 964, 28·2 per cent) than men (120 of 993, 12·1 per cent) (relative risk 2·33, 95 per cent c.i. 1·92 to 2·84; P < 0·001). Of 15 validated risk prediction models, the Adult Appendicitis Score performed best (cut‐off score 8 or less, specificity 63·1 per cent, failure rate 3·7 per cent). The Appendicitis Inflammatory Response Score performed best for men (cut‐off score 2 or less, specificity 24·7 per cent, failure rate 2·4 per cent).
Conclusion
Women in the UK had a disproportionate risk of admission without surgical intervention and had high rates of normal appendicectomy. Risk prediction models to support shared decision‐making by identifying adults in the UK at low risk of appendicitis were identified
