    Get PDF

Neutrinos with energies above 1017 eV are detectable with the Surface Detector Array of the Pierre Auger Observatory. The identification is efficiently performed for neutrinos of all flavors interacting in the atmosphere at large zenith angles, as well as for Earth-skimming \u3c4 neutrinos with nearly tangential trajectories relative to the Earth. No neutrino candidates were found in 3c 14.7 years of data taken up to 31 August 2018. This leads to restrictive upper bounds on their flux. The 90% C.L. single-flavor limit to the diffuse flux of ultra-high-energy neutrinos with an E\u3bd-2 spectrum in the energy range 1.0 7 1017 eV -2.5 7 1019 eV is E2 dN\u3bd/dE\u3bd < 4.4 7 10-9 GeV cm-2 s-1 sr-1, placing strong constraints on several models of neutrino production at EeV energies and on the properties of the sources of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays

Introduction Mesenteric and portal venous thromboses are rare diseases with high mortality rates and are strongly associated with hepatic cirrhosis, and abdominal inflammatory or tumoral processes, but in some cases can be the first sign of myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN) or hereditary thrombophilia. JAK2V617F mutation detection is an important diagnostic tool for MPN patients. The aim of this study was to describe the JAK2V617F mutation prevalence on Chilean patients suffering from a primary splanchnic venous thrombosis (SVT), in order to assess how it relates to primary MVT and PVT in our specific population. Methods A retrospective observational study was conducted in patients referred to the University of Chile Clinical Hospital with mesenteric and/or portal venous thrombosis diagnosis over a 7-year period. Patients with primary thrombosis underwent hereditary thrombophilia study and JAK2V617F mutation screening. Results A total of 123 patients had splanchnic venous thrombosis (mesenteric and/or portal) as their main discharge diagnosis. Sixty patients (49%) had primary mesenteric or portal venous thrombosis (no attributable secondary cause). Hereditary thrombophilia and MPN were diagnosed in 21.6% and 43.3% of SVT patients, respectively. Twenty SVT patients remained without an etiologic diagnosis. In MPN patients, almost all had the JAK2V617F mutation (92.3%). About 16% of patients who had positive JAK2V617F mutation did not meet diagnostic criteria for MPN. Conclusions In this Chilean cohort, half of mesenteric or portal venous thrombosis showed no secondary cause. In this group, the main causes were MPN and hereditary thrombophilia. Nearly, all MPN patients had JAK2V617F mutation, but there was a group of patients having JAK2V617F mutation but did not meet MPN criteria

Influence of climate change on IDF curves for the metropolitan area of Barcelona (Spain)

The evaluation of the possible climate change influence on extreme precipitation is very interesting in the Mediterranean area due to the usual and characteristic high intensities of its rainfall pattern. This analysis is also very important in urban zones, especially those densely populated with complex sewer systems, generally vulnerable to torrential rainfall. In this work, a total of 114 simulated daily rainfall series, 84 for the period 2000–2099 and 30 for the control period 1951–1999, have been analysed. These series were obtained for six thermo-pluviometric stations located in the metropolitan area of Barcelona using the information provided by five general circulation models under four future climate scenarios of greenhouse gas emissions and applying statistical downscaling methods. The potential changes in the intensity–duration–frequency relationships due to climate change have been investigated. For the last third of the 21st century, under A1B, A2 and B2 climate scenarios, an increase of at least 4% has been found on the expected daily rainfall with return period longer than 20 years. Using a temporal downscaling based on scaling properties of rainfall, future hourly extreme rainfall has been estimated. For almost all the scenarios and periods considered, the increase on the expected hourly rainfall has resulted slightly higher than the corresponding daily rainfall. The greatest differences between the future hourly and daily rainfall estimated have been found in the second third of the century under scenarios A1B (8%) and A2 (9%

Differential Immune Checkpoint and Ig-like V-Type Receptor Profiles in COVID-19: Associations with Severity and Treatment

    No full text
Identifying patients’ immune system status has become critical to managing SARS-CoV-2 infection and avoiding the appearance of secondary infections during a hospital stay. Despite the high volume of research, robust severity and outcome markers are still lacking in COVID-19. We recruited 87 COVID-19 patients and analyzed, by unbiased automated software, 356 parameters at baseline emergency department admission including: high depth immune phenotyping and immune checkpoint expression by spectral flow cytometry, cytokines and other soluble molecules in plasma as well as routine clinical variables. We identified 69 baseline alterations in the expression of immune checkpoints, Ig-like V type receptors and other immune population markers associated with severity (O2 requirement). Thirty-four changes in these markers/populations were associated with secondary infection appearance. In addition, through a longitudinal sample collection, we described the changes which take place in the immune system of COVID-19 patients during secondary infections and in response to corticosteroid treatment. Our study provides information about immune checkpoint molecules and other less-studied receptors with Ig-like V-type domains such as CD108, CD226, HVEM (CD270), B7H3 (CD276), B7H5 (VISTA) and GITR (CD357), defining these as novel interesting molecules in severe and corticosteroids-treated acute infections
