    Conocimiento y percepción de estudiantes de pregrado sobre especies exóticas invasoras

    The pet trade often introduces invasive alien species (IAS), causing harmful effects on native species. Additionally, limited awareness of the origins and impacts of IAS prevails among the public. This study aims to assess the knowledge and perceptions of university students regarding exotic species and the factors motivating the acquisition of exotic pets. To achieve this, an online survey was conducted among undergraduate students. From the surveyed group, 84% recognized IAS. However, misconceptions persisted, with 58.6% wrongly identifying IAS as native. The survey findings also revealed that social media motivate exotic pet ownership. Interestingly, while some IAS were perceived with tenderness and deemed deserving of legal protection, others were considered unsuitable for presence in Chilean ecosystems. Overall, the study underscores the significance of promoting awareness regarding IAS, their effects, and responsible exotic pet ownership to protect the fragile equilibrium of Chilean ecosystems.El comercio de animales de compañía introduce a menudo especies exóticas invasoras (EEI) que causan efectos nocivos en las especies autóctonas. Además, el público tiene un conocimiento limitado de los orígenes e impactos de las EEI. Este estudio pretende evaluar los conocimientos y percepciones de los estudiantes universitarios sobre las especies exóticas y los factores que motivan la adquisición de mascotas exóticas. Para ello, se realizó una encuesta en línea entre estudiantes universitarios. Del grupo encuestado, el 84% reconoció las EEI. Sin embargo, persistían los conceptos erróneos, ya que el 58,6% identificaba erróneamente las EEI como autóctonas. Los resultados de la encuesta también revelaron que las redes sociales motivan la tenencia de mascotas exóticas. Curiosamente, mientras que algunas EEI fueron percibidas con ternura y consideradas merecedoras de protección legal, otras fueron consideradas inadecuadas para su presencia en los ecosistemas chilenos. En general, el estudio subraya la importancia de promover la concienciación sobre las EEI, sus efectos y la tenencia responsable de mascotas exóticas para proteger el frágil equilibrio de los ecosistemas chilenos

    Esta investigación, cuyo título: “El beneficio del impuesto predial para el adulto mayor en la recaudación tributaria de la Municipalidad de Manantay, 2021” tuvo como objetivo analizar de qué manera la ley del beneficio al impuesto predial para el adulto mayor afecta en la recaudación tributaria de la Municipalidad de Manantay, 2021. La metodología, tipo básico, diseño de investigación de teoría fundamentada, se recolectó la información necesaria sobre las categorías y subcategorías. Por tanto, fue de un enfoque cualitativo, las técnicas aplicadas fueron la entrevista y análisis documental de datos; los instrumentos fueron las respectivas guías, con la finalidad de obtener la opinión de aquellos especialistas sobre el tema investigado. Se concluyó, que la afectación que sufrió la Municipalidad Distrital de Manantay en la recaudación del impuesto predial debido a la aplicación de la norma en beneficio del adulto mayor fue mínima, pero ello causó la necesidad de realizar campañas, tributarias, condonaciones de pago de interese, etc. Finalmente, se recomienda que el Estado debe de crear una norma compensatoria, donde señale los mecanismo o estrategia de cobranza que ayude el incremento de la recaudación del impuesto predial, a favor de la entidad en este caso la Municipalidad

    Un análisis de la evasión tributaria

    The objective of the review article was to carry out a documentary analysis on tax evasion at the international and national level, for which scientific articles collected, filtered and selected from the Scopus, Redalyc and Scielo databases were analyzed, and then organized in tables. standing out. The results on the evasion factors are social inequality, unfair policies, little tax culture, corruption and improvisation of officials, a high tax rate, among others; In this context, evasion produces effects such as citizen dissatisfaction due to poor public services, scarcity of State economic resources and, therefore, citizen reluctance to pay taxes; the personal qualities of good taxpayers are good tax culture, morality, educational level and religiosity; while the strategies to reduce evasion are fines, rewards, permanent audits and the use of information technologies. It is concluded that evasion limits the development of a society, prospering mostly the most vulnerable populations, because they do not have the possibility of accessing quality public services.El artículo de revisión tuvo como objetivo realizar un análisis documental sobre la evasión tributaria a nivel internacional y nacional, para ello se analizaron artículos científicos recopilados, filtrados y seleccionados de las bases de datos de Scopus, Redalyc y Scielo, y luego organizados en tablas excel. Los resultados sobre los factores de evasión  son la desigualdad social, las políticas injustas, la poca cultura tributaria, la corrupción e improvisación de funcionarios, una tasa impositiva alta, entre otras; en este contexto la evasión produce efectos como la  insatisfacción ciudadana por los malos servicios públicos, escasez de recursos económicos del Estado  y por ende la renuencia del ciudadano al pago de tributos; las cualidades personales de los buenos contribuyentes son la buena cultura tributaria, la moral, nivel educativo y la religiosidad; mientras que las estrategias para disminuir la evasión  son las multas, las recompensas, las auditorías permanentes y el uso de tecnologías de la información. Se concluye que la evasión limita el desarrollo de una sociedad, afectando mayormente a las poblaciones más vulnerables, debido a que no tienen la posibilidad de acceder a servicios públicos de calidad

    Visceral Adipose Tissue: At the Intersection of Lipoprotein Associated CV Risk

    Objectives: Internet can accelerate information exchange. Social networks are the most accessed especially Facebook. This kind of networks might create dependency with several negative consequences in people’s life. The aim of this study was to assess potential association between Facebook dependence and poor sleep quality. Methodology/Principal Findings: A cross sectional study was performed enrolling undergraduate students of the Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas, Lima, Peru. The Internet Addiction Questionnaire, adapted to the Facebook case, and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, were used. A global score of 6 or greater was defined as the cutoff to determine poor sleep quality. Generalized linear model were used to determine prevalence ratios (PR) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI). A total of 418 students were analyzed; of them, 322 (77.0%) were women, with a mean age of 20.1 (SD: 2.5) years. Facebook dependence was found in 8.6% (95% CI: 5.9%–11.3%), whereas poor sleep quality was present in 55.0% (95% CI: 50.2%–59.8%). A significant association between Facebook dependence and poor sleep quality mainly explained by daytime dysfunction was found (PR = 1.31; IC95%: 1.04–1.67) after adjusting for age, sex and years in the faculty. Conclusions: There is a relationship between Facebook dependence and poor quality of sleep. More than half of students reported poor sleep quality. Strategies to moderate the use of this social network and to improve sleep quality in this population are needed.Revisión por pare

    Long-Term Persistance of the Pathophysiologic Response to Severe Burn Injury

    Main contributors to adverse outcomes in severely burned pediatric patients are profound and complex metabolic changes in response to the initial injury. It is currently unknown how long these conditions persist beyond the acute phase post-injury. The aim of the present study was to examine the persistence of abnormalities of various clinical parameters commonly utilized to assess the degree hypermetabolic and inflammatory alterations in severely burned children for up to three years post-burn to identify patient specific therapeutic needs and interventions. Nine-hundred seventy-seven severely burned pediatric patients with burns over 30% of the total body surface admitted to our institution between 1998 and 2008 were enrolled in this study and compared to a cohort non-burned, non-injured children. Demographics and clinical outcomes, hypermetabolism, body composition, organ function, inflammatory and acute phase responses were determined at admission and subsequent regular intervals for up to 36 months post-burn. Statistical analysis was performed using One-way ANOVA, Student's t-test with Bonferroni correction where appropriate with significance accepted at p<0.05. Resting energy expenditure, body composition, metabolic markers, cardiac and organ function clearly demonstrated that burn caused profound alterations for up to three years post-burn demonstrating marked and prolonged hypermetabolism, p<0.05. Along with increased hypermetabolism, significant elevation of cortisol, catecholamines, cytokines, and acute phase proteins indicate that burn patients are in a hyperinflammatory state for up to three years post-burn p<0.05. Severe burn injury leads to a much more profound and prolonged hypermetabolic and hyperinflammatory response than previously shown. Given the tremendous adverse events associated with the hypermetabolic and hyperinflamamtory responses, we now identified treatment needs for severely burned patients for a much more prolonged time

    Long-term thermal sensitivity of Earth’s tropical forests

    The sensitivity of tropical forest carbon to climate is a key uncertainty in predicting global climate change. Although short-term drying and warming are known to affect forests, it is unknown if such effects translate into long-term responses. Here, we analyze 590 permanent plots measured across the tropics to derive the equilibrium climate controls on forest carbon. Maximum temperature is the most important predictor of aboveground biomass (−9.1 megagrams of carbon per hectare per degree Celsius), primarily by reducing woody productivity, and has a greater impact per °C in the hottest forests (>32.2°C). Our results nevertheless reveal greater thermal resilience than observations of short-term variation imply. To realize the long-term climate adaptation potential of tropical forests requires both protecting them and stabilizing Earth’s climate

    The Changing Landscape for Stroke\ua0Prevention in AF: Findings From the GLORIA-AF Registry Phase 2

    Background GLORIA-AF (Global Registry on Long-Term Oral Antithrombotic Treatment in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation) is a prospective, global registry program describing antithrombotic treatment patterns in patients with newly diagnosed nonvalvular atrial fibrillation at risk of stroke. Phase 2 began when dabigatran, the first non\u2013vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulant (NOAC), became available. Objectives This study sought to describe phase 2 baseline data and compare these with the pre-NOAC era collected during phase&nbsp;1. Methods During phase 2, 15,641 consenting patients were enrolled (November 2011 to December 2014); 15,092 were eligible. This pre-specified cross-sectional analysis describes eligible patients\u2019 baseline characteristics. Atrial fibrillation&nbsp;disease characteristics, medical outcomes, and concomitant diseases and medications were collected. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results Of the total patients, 45.5% were female; median age was 71 (interquartile range: 64, 78) years. Patients were from Europe (47.1%), North America (22.5%), Asia (20.3%), Latin America (6.0%), and the Middle East/Africa (4.0%). Most had high stroke risk (CHA2DS2-VASc [Congestive heart failure, Hypertension, Age&nbsp; 6575 years, Diabetes mellitus, previous Stroke, Vascular disease, Age 65 to 74 years, Sex category] score&nbsp; 652; 86.1%); 13.9% had moderate risk (CHA2DS2-VASc&nbsp;= 1). Overall, 79.9% received oral anticoagulants, of whom 47.6% received NOAC and 32.3% vitamin K antagonists (VKA); 12.1% received antiplatelet agents; 7.8% received no antithrombotic treatment. For comparison, the proportion of phase 1 patients (of N&nbsp;= 1,063 all eligible) prescribed VKA was 32.8%, acetylsalicylic acid 41.7%, and no therapy 20.2%. In Europe in phase 2, treatment with NOAC was more common than VKA (52.3% and 37.8%, respectively); 6.0% of patients received antiplatelet treatment; and 3.8% received no antithrombotic treatment. In North America, 52.1%, 26.2%, and 14.0% of patients received NOAC, VKA, and antiplatelet drugs, respectively; 7.5% received no antithrombotic treatment. NOAC use was less common in Asia (27.7%), where 27.5% of patients received VKA, 25.0% antiplatelet drugs, and 19.8% no antithrombotic treatment. Conclusions The baseline data from GLORIA-AF phase 2 demonstrate that in newly diagnosed nonvalvular atrial fibrillation patients, NOAC have been highly adopted into practice, becoming more frequently prescribed than VKA in&nbsp;Europe and North America. Worldwide, however, a large proportion of patients remain undertreated, particularly in&nbsp;Asia&nbsp;and North America.     Sensitivity of South American tropical forests to an extreme climate anomaly

    The tropical forest carbon sink is known to be drought sensitive, but it is unclear which forests are the most vulnerable to extreme events. Forests with hotter and drier baseline conditions may be protected by prior adaptation, or more vulnerable because they operate closer to physiological limits. Here we report that forests in drier South American climates experienced the greatest impacts of the 2015–2016 El Niño, indicating greater vulnerability to extreme temperatures and drought. The long-term, ground-measured tree-by-tree responses of 123 forest plots across tropical South America show that the biomass carbon sink ceased during the event with carbon balance becoming indistinguishable from zero (−0.02 ± 0.37 Mg C ha −1 per year). However, intact tropical South American forests overall were no more sensitive to the extreme 2015–2016 El Niño than to previous less intense events, remaining a key defence against climate change as long as they are protected

    Taking the pulse of Earth's tropical forests using networks of highly distributed plots

    Tropical forests are the most diverse and productive ecosystems on Earth. While better understanding of these forests is critical for our collective future, until quite recently efforts to measure and monitor them have been largely disconnected. Networking is essential to discover the answers to questions that transcend borders and the horizons of funding agencies. Here we show how a global community is responding to the challenges of tropical ecosystem research with diverse teams measuring forests tree-by-tree in thousands of long-term plots. We review the major scientific discoveries of this work and show how this process is changing tropical forest science. Our core approach involves linking long-term grassroots initiatives with standardized protocols and data management to generate robust scaled-up results. By connecting tropical researchers and elevating their status, our Social Research Network model recognises the key role of the data originator in scientific discovery. Conceived in 1999 with RAINFOR (South America), our permanent plot networks have been adapted to Africa (AfriTRON) and Southeast Asia (T-FORCES) and widely emulated worldwide. Now these multiple initiatives are integrated via ForestPlots.net cyber-infrastructure, linking colleagues from 54 countries across 24 plot networks. Collectively these are transforming understanding of tropical forests and their biospheric role. Together we have discovered how, where and why forest carbon and biodiversity are responding to climate change, and how they feedback on it. This long-term pan-tropical collaboration has revealed a large long-term carbon sink and its trends, as well as making clear which drivers are most important, which forest processes are affected, where they are changing, what the lags are, and the likely future responses of tropical forests as the climate continues to change. By leveraging a remarkably old technology, plot networks are sparking a very modern revolution in tropical forest science.     Caracterización clínico-patológica de neoplasias de la cavidad oral de erizos de tierra (Atelerix albiventris)

    Memoria para optar al Título Profesional de Médico Veterinario Tesis para optar al Grado de Magíster en Ciencias Animales y VeterinariasLos erizos de tierra han adquirido un importante rol como mascotas en diversos países. Esta especie tiene predisposición a desarrollar lesiones orales, incluyendo la presencia de tumores. La mayoría de estas lesiones son neoplasias malignas con mal pronóstico; sin embargo, algunas son neoplasias benignas o lesiones no neoplásicas. Es por ello que es fundamental la evaluación completa de la cavidad oral durante el examen clínico rutinario, ya que identificar adecuadamente un tumor oral permitirá establecer un diagnóstico y pronóstico preciso. El objetivo de este estudio fue caracterizar clínica y patológicamente lesiones neoplásicas orales de erizos de tierra. Durante un año, 21 individuos fueron diagnosticados con un tumor oral, de los cuales se obtuvo muestras de tejido. 52% fueron hembras y 48% machos y el rango de edad fue 2 a 6,5 años (mediana = 4,3 años). Diecisiete (81%) casos fueron carcinoma de células escamosas (CCE) poco diferenciado (Grado 3), 2 fibromas odontogénicos periféricos (9,5%), un sarcoma indiferenciado (4,8%) y un hemangiosarcoma (4,8%). La morfología microscópica de estas neoplasias fue similar a la descrita en otras especies domésticas. Macroscópicamente, el CCE se presentó como un tumor altamente invasivo ulcerativo o nodular, ocasionando una deformación facial en todos los ejemplares. Las otras neoplasias fueron pólipos no invasivos con buen pronóstico posterior a la extirpación quirúrgica. Se detectó expresión de Ki67, VEGFR-2 y COX-2 en la mayoría de las muestras de CCE oral. En particular, sólo la expresión de VEGFR2 fue significativamente (p = 0,01) mayor en CCE en relación con la hiperplasia gingival. En conclusión, la mayoría de los tumores de cavidad oral en erizos de tierra fueron altamente malignos y fueron diagnosticados como CCE poco diferenciado. Adicionalmente, los tumores orales pueden ser similares en su aspecto, en etapas tempranas; sin embargo, histológicamente pueden tener diagnósticos y pronósticos distintos. Entonces, ante la detección de una masa oral se debe realizar un estudio histológico junto con el examen clínico completo.African pigmy hedgehogs have become popular pets in several countries. One of the main medical concerns in this species is their propensity to develop oral lesions, many of which are tumors. Most of these masses are malignant neoplasms with poor prognosis; however, some of them are benign neoplasms or non-neoplastic lesions. Since the examination of the oral cavity is an important part of routine veterinary check-ups, recognizing these lesions can improve diagnosis and prognosis. The purpose of this study was to establish a clinic and pathologic characterization of oral cavity neoplasms presented in hedgehogs. Tissue samples were obtained from twenty-one privately owned hedgehogs that were diagnosed with oral cavity masses during a one-year period. 52% were female and 48% male and the ages ranged from 2 to 6.5 years (median = 4,3 years). Seventeen (81%) cases were diagnosed as poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinomas (SCC), 2 peripheric odontogenic fibromas (9,5%), one undifferentiated sarcoma (4,8%) and one hemangiosarcoma (4,8%). It is important to remark that the microscopic morphology was similar to that described in other domestic animals. At gross examination, SCCs were highly invasive masses that could be ulcerative or nodular, causing face deformation in all cases. The other masses were non-invasive, polypoid and exhibited a good prognosis after surgical excision. Immunohistochemical expression of some cancer biomarkers were assessed in the SCC samples. There were Ki67, VEGFR-2 and COX-2 expression in almost all samples of SCC. A statistical significance association (Fisher exact test) was determinated between VEGFR-2 expression and SCC (p = 0,01). In conclusion, most of the oral cavity masses of African hedgehogs are highly malignant and the majority were poorly differentiated SCC. Also, it is important to remark that oral masses could be similar grossly, especially in initial stages, however histologically different diagnoses and prognosis could be made. Therefore, if an oral mass is detected, a throughout physical examination should always be accompanied with a histologic study.Proyecto U-INICIA UI 009/16
