An Account of the Birth and Growth of Caddo Archeology, as Seen by Review of 50 Caddo Conferences, 1946-2008
Any 50th anniversary should be noticed as a milestone of some sort, whether of a person or a thing. In this case, any of you who can subtract will recognize that from 1946, when the first Caddo Conference occurred, to 2008 is more than 50 years. This is because between 1946 and 1965, there were only eight meetings, and we ran out of things to talk about (or people to agree to host the meetings) and did not meet in 1969. After the 12th meeting in 1970, we have managed to have a meeting every year, and we have maintained a pattern of meeting in a different state of the four encompassing our research area, or at least a different host institution (see Appendix I).
We have maintained flexibility by not organizing: no constitution/by-laws, no officers, no members, and no 501c(3) status. This is not uncommon amongst regional archeological conferences, although several have felt the need for more structure as their attendance and publications grew
‘… a metal conducts and a non-metal doesn't’
In a letter to one of the authors, Sir Nevill Mott, then in his tenth decade, highlighted the fact that the statement ‘… a metal conducts, and a non-metal doesn’t’ can be true only at the absolute zero of temperature, T=0 K. But, of course, experimental studies of metals, non-metals and, indeed, the electronic and thermodynamic transition between these canonical states of matter must always occur above T=0 K, and, in many important cases, for temperatures far above the absolute zero. Here, we review the issues—theoretical and experimental—attendant on studies of the metal to non-metal transition in doped semiconductors at temperatures close to absolute zero (T=0.03 K) and fluid chemical elements at temperatures far above absolute zero (T>1000 K)
Limit on suppression of ionization in metastable neon traps due to long-range anisotropy
This paper investigates the possibility of suppressing the ionization rate in
a magnetostatic trap of metastable neon atoms by spin-polarizing the atoms.
Suppression of the ionization is critical for the possibility of reaching
Bose-Einstein condensation with such atoms. We estimate the relevant long-range
interactions for the system, consisting of electric quadrupole-quadrupole and
dipole-induced dipole terms, and develop short-range potentials based on the
Na_2 singlet and triplet potentials. The auto-ionization widths of the system
are also calculated. With these ingredients we calculate the ionization rate
for spin-polarized and for spin-isotropic samples, caused by anisotropy of the
long-range interactions. We find that spin-polarization may allow for four
orders of magnitude suppression of the ionization rate for Ne. The results
depend sensitively on a precise knowledge of the interaction potentials,
however, pointing out the need for experimental input. The same model gives a
suppression ratio close to unity for metastable xenon in accordance with
experimental results, due to a much increased anisotropy in this case.Comment: 15 pages including figures, LaTex/RevTex, uses epsfig.st
The microRNA-29 family in cartilage homeostasis and osteoarthritis
MicroRNAs have been shown to function in cartilage development and homeostasis, as well as in progression of osteoarthritis. The objective of the current study was to identify microRNAs involved in the onset or early progression of osteoarthritis and characterise their function in chondrocytes. MicroRNA expression in mouse knee joints post-DMM surgery was measured over 7 days. Expression of miR-29b-3p was increased at day 1 and regulated in the opposite direction to its potential targets. In a mouse model of cartilage injury and in end-stage human OA cartilage, the miR-29 family were also regulated. SOX9 repressed expression of miR-29a-3p and miR-29b-3p via the 29a/b1 promoter. TGFβ1 decreased expression of miR-29a, b and c (3p) in primary chondrocytes, whilst IL-1β increased (but LPS decreased) their expression. The miR-29 family negatively regulated Smad, NFκB and canonical WNT signalling pathways. Expression profiles revealed regulation of new WNT-related genes. Amongst these, FZD3, FZD5, DVL3, FRAT2, CK2A2 were validated as direct targets of the miR-29 family. These data identify the miR-29 family as microRNAs acting across development and progression of OA. They are regulated by factors which are important in OA and impact on relevant signalling pathways
CUORE: A Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events
CUORE is a proposed tightly packed array of 1000 TeO2 bolometers, each being
a cube 5 cm on a side with a mass of 760 g. The array consists of 25 vertical
towers, arranged in a square of 5 towers by 5 towers, each containing 10 layers
of 4 crystals. The design of the detector is optimized for ultralow-background
searches: for neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te (33.8% abundance), cold
dark matter, solar axions, and rare nuclear decays. A preliminary experiment
involving 20 crystals 3x3x6 cm3 of 340 g has been completed, and a single CUORE
tower is being constructed as a smaller scale experiment called CUORICINO. The
expected performance and sensitivity, based on Monte Carlo simulations and
extrapolations of present results, are reported.Comment: 39 pages, 12 figures, submitted to NI
Elastohydrodynamic lubrication of faults
The heat flow paradox provides evidence that a dynamic weakening mechanism may be important in understanding fault friction and rupture. We present here a specific model for dynamic velocity weakening that uses the mechanics of well-studied industrial bearings to explain fault zone processes. An elevated fluid pressure is generated in a thin film of viscous fluid that is sheared between nearly parallel surface. This lubrication pressure supports part of the load, therefore reducing the normal stress and associated friction across the gap. The pressure also elastically deforms the wall rock. The model is parameterized using the Sommerfeld number, which is a measure of the lubrication pressure normalized by the lithostatic load. For typical values of the material properties, slip distance and velocity, the Sommerfeld number suggests that lubrication is an important process. If the lubrication length scales as the slip distance in an earthquake, the frictional stress during dynamically lubricated large earthquakes is 30% less than the friction with only hydrostatic pore pressure. Elastohydrodynamic lubrication also predicts a decrease in high-frequency (>1 Hz) radiation above a critical slip distance of a few meters. This prediction is well matched by the strong motion data from the 1999 Taiwan earthquake. The observed 2 orders of magnitude variation in scaled radiated energy between small (M_w 6) is also predicted by the lubrication model
Spintronics: Fundamentals and applications
Spintronics, or spin electronics, involves the study of active control and
manipulation of spin degrees of freedom in solid-state systems. This article
reviews the current status of this subject, including both recent advances and
well-established results. The primary focus is on the basic physical principles
underlying the generation of carrier spin polarization, spin dynamics, and
spin-polarized transport in semiconductors and metals. Spin transport differs
from charge transport in that spin is a nonconserved quantity in solids due to
spin-orbit and hyperfine coupling. The authors discuss in detail spin
decoherence mechanisms in metals and semiconductors. Various theories of spin
injection and spin-polarized transport are applied to hybrid structures
relevant to spin-based devices and fundamental studies of materials properties.
Experimental work is reviewed with the emphasis on projected applications, in
which external electric and magnetic fields and illumination by light will be
used to control spin and charge dynamics to create new functionalities not

Differential branching fraction and angular analysis of decays
The differential branching fraction of the rare decay is measured as a function of , the
square of the dimuon invariant mass. The analysis is performed using
proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0
\mbox{ fb}^{-1}, collected by the LHCb experiment. Evidence of signal is
observed in the region below the square of the mass. Integrating
over 15 < q^{2} < 20 \mbox{ GeV}^2/c^4 the branching fraction is measured as
d\mathcal{B}(\Lambda^{0}_{b} \rightarrow \Lambda \mu^+\mu^-)/dq^2 = (1.18 ^{+
0.09} _{-0.08} \pm 0.03 \pm 0.27) \times 10^{-7} ( \mbox{GeV}^{2}/c^{4})^{-1},
where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic and due to the
normalisation mode, , respectively.
In the intervals where the signal is observed, angular distributions are
studied and the forward-backward asymmetries in the dimuon ()
and hadron () systems are measured for the first time. In the
range 15 < q^2 < 20 \mbox{ GeV}^2/c^4 they are found to be A^{l}_{\rm FB} =
-0.05 \pm 0.09 \mbox{ (stat)} \pm 0.03 \mbox{ (syst)} and A^{h}_{\rm FB} =

The Arabidopsis plastid-signalling mutant gun1 (genomes uncoupled1) shows altered sensitivity to sucrose and abscisic acid and alterations in early seedling development
Developing seedlings of the Arabidopsis gun1 (genomes uncoupled1) mutant, which is defective in retrograde plastid-to-nucleus signalling, show several previously unrecognized mutant phenotypes. gun1 seedlings accumulated less anthocyanin than wild-type seedlings when grown in the presence of 2% (w/v) sucrose, due to lower amounts of transcripts of early anthocyanin biosynthesis genes in gun1. Norflurazon and lincomycin, which induce retrograde signalling, further decreased the anthocyanin content of sucrose-treated seedlings, and altered the temporal pattern of anthocyanin accumulation. Lincomycin treatment altered the spatial pattern of sucrose-induced anthocyanin accumulation, suggesting that plastids provide information for the regulation of anthocyanin biosynthesis in Arabidopsis seedlings. The temporal pattern of accumulation of LHCB1 transcripts differed between wild-type and gun1 seedlings, and gun1 seedlings were more sensitive to sucrose suppression of LHCB1 transcript accumulation than wild-type seedlings. Growth and development of gun1 seedlings was more sensitive to exogenous 2% sucrose than wild-type seedlings and, in the presence of lincomycin, cotyledon expansion was enhanced in gun1 seedlings compared to the wild type. gun1 seedlings were more sensitive than wild-type seedlings to the inhibition of seedling growth and development by abscisic acid. These observations clearly implicate GUN1 and plastid signalling in the regulation of seedling development and anthocyanin biosynthesis, and indicate a complex interplay between sucrose and plastid signalling pathways
